NUESTRA HISTORIA

OUR STORY

Created in 2013 in Mexico City, Terremoto is a non-for-profit print and online magazine, dedicated to the dissemination of critical thinking around contemporary art in both Latin and North America. We deliver first-hand documentation and challenging art criticism, mapping the most relevant and striking of the Pan-American artistic field. The magazine is free, online and print, with distribution in more than 20 countries of the Americas, as well as in Europe, for sale at an affordable price in selected bookstores.

Terremoto is fully bilingual in Spanish and English, and ambitions to be the voice of a new generation of art practitioners as much interested in forms and aesthetics, as in theory, literature, and politics, with a strong focus on the local problematics of our time, such as structural injustice in the societies in which we operate, our response to climate change, and the strategies of resistance art can offer to these crisis situations.

WHERE ARE WE NOW

In the last year Terremoto has grown, either to expand our chances of fundraising—providing editorial services through Temblores Publicaciones, for example—or to continue with our mission of dissemination—as is the case of the exhibition program La Postal, focused on research around archives.

Just like any other independent project, we operate under the climate of uncertainty that surrounds us, with always changing circumstances. This is why we have developed a logic of mixed financing: on one hand, advertising sales and subscriptions; and on the other, grants support and philanthropy. Through this campaign, as a way to compensate for the content we offer for free, we are looking today for your support as readers to ensure the printing of the 15º and 16º issue of Terremoto, thinking distribution in paper as a medium to continue disseminating content away from the control of algorithms of the web traffic.

OUR PLAN

The making of each edition is done in co-edition with female curators, historians, and invited researchers, to commission the contributions, as well as to do edition, translation, copy editing, design, print and distribution, in general terms. We have been able to commission the texts for our next issue thanks to the support granted by Fundación Jumex; however,  printing costs represent the major inversion for production. Issue 15 of Terremoto, to be launched during this month, June 2019, is co-edited with Lorena Tabares, and is focused on performance, gesture, and language. This issue will be in circulation for approximately four months, until October 2019. The topic of issue 16 has to be determined still; this issue will be in circulation during the Fall of 2019.

Risks and challenges

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The biggest challenge now is to explore and create sustainable economic models, with new strategies. As a still very young non-for-profit printed magazine, bilingual and free of charge and distribution, Terremoto is a force before the uncertainty and anxiety of seeing how the world becomes something that does not feel safe. This, coupled with the uncertainty of the confusing geopolitics of the region, has independent press facing a lot of transformations these days, and art criticism doesn't escape it.

This campaign will serve for us to accomplish issues 15 and 16 go print, since we believe in a print Terremoto that can offer the stability of a physic archive facing the uncertainty that threatens, in a medium/long-term, the free access to Internet—a question that needs to be posed now.
