Cargo Node: World's most useful bike now fits in your closet
Life is full of incredible opportunities and things to explore. In today's carsick culture, we've set out to design a bike that can help you unlock the hidden treasures of your city.
A cargo-carrying bike gives you freedom like no other bike because it can haul you—and your stuff.
The world’s most useful bike, the cargo bike, now folds up small―in 10 seconds―for city living.
The Cargo Node fits in an elevator so you can bring it up to your apartment and stash it at the end of the hallway, on your balcony, or beside the sofa. Ride it to the office, store it in the lounge, and pick up a week’s worth of groceries on the way home.
You can bring the Cargo Node with you pretty much anywhere with minimum hassle. It’s a cargo bike designed to fit city life.
We designed the Cargo Node to be ready for anything. Leveraging Tern’s expertise in folding bikes and Xtracycle’s expertise in cargo bikes, we built-in a lot of important features:
The Cargo Node is up to the task. We've designed it to haul a colossal 350 lbs (158.8 kg), and there are all sorts of different ways to load the rack so that you can carry things of all shapes and sizes.
Below is a quick video from 3rd party load testing based on the European Union's strict standards. The Cargo Node passed with flying colors.
The Cargo Node is compatible with the entire Xtracycle accessory ecosystem. So, it's ready for expansion as your needs evolve over time.
There are quite a few bike makers dabbling in cargo bikes these days but they don't create or stock the parts you need to maintain your bike over the long haul. Xtracycle is a long-established expert in cargo-carrying bikes, with a full line of accessories and replacement parts in stock so that you can customize or upgrade your bike.
The Cargo Node can fit a wide range of riders from 5’2” to 6’5” (158-195 cm), and can easily be shared by multiple members of the family. Tern’s patented folding-bike technology makes it easy to quickly adjust the bike to your size and riding style.
The Tern Andros™ handlebar stem lets you adjust the height and distance of your handlebars—in seconds—with no tools required. This allows you to find just the right riding position for comfort, and makes it simple to share the Cargo Node with friends and family members
You need to be safe when you’re out on the road. That’s why we’ve designed the Cargo Node to ensure you can see and be seen.
We baked in Tern’s advanced folding-bike technology—with 9 different patents—so that the Cargo Node delivers a great ride but still folds down small to fit in cars, elevators and living-room corners.
A reward should be, well… rewarding. Back our Kickstarter campaign, and you’ll be getting the Cargo Node for $200-300 below the eventual market price. Plus, you’ll be getting bonus gear, and you won't have to worry about the cost of sales tax.
For European backers, please note that the VAT is built into your shipping costs.
For Kickstarter backers only, we're making the Cargo Node available with the Tern Kanga Rack (plus, the Tern Luggage Truss to connect it to the bike) so that you can carry more cargo on the front of your bike.
The Kanga Rack is a versatile “racksket” (rack-basket hybrid) that magically turns your favorite bag into a bicycle bag. Because it’s mounted to the frame, and not the handlebars, it doesn’t affect steering or handling. An adjustable strap system lets you carry even large, bulky bags.
The Cargo Node is only possible because it’s a collaboration between two experts from two different worlds. Tern and Xtracycle each contributed a unique set of knowledge to create this game-changing bike.
The founders of Tern and Xtracycle–Josh and Ross–went to the same university. They didn’t know each other then but they have since become good friends and share the same fundamental belief that cycling is key to a sustainable future.
A few years back, our two companies ran a small experiment. We combined a handful of Tern's full-size folding bikes with Xtracycle's bolt-on cargo rear rack. Though we only made a few of these bikes, they sold well and got some really enthusiastic press coverage. This small success gave us the confidence and inspiration to go all-in—and move ahead with designing a folding cargo bike from the ground up. And that's how the Cargo Node was born.
Team members have come together to collaborate on this project from offices around the world—across the U.S., Finland and Taiwan. Together, we've made sure the Cargo Node is packed with features that will make you want to ride the bike everyday.
Smaller level rewards such as bottle openers, multi-tools and adult passenger kits will all be delivered in November 2015.
EARLY DELIVERY IN EUROPE!
The first 5 backers in Europe who choose the Black Cargo Node as a reward will receive their bikes in January 2016 instead of April 2016.
We had fun designing the Cargo Node. It has nice, wide gearing so that you can conquer those hilly climbs, and lots of great components that ensure a great ride. What more technical details? Read on…
We created the Cargo Node because it's BAD ASS. We're thrilled by how well it works, and the new opportunities it creates. However, many sport-centric bike shops haven't yet embraced the rise of urban utility cycling.
That's why we're turning to our community and Kickstarter. We want to prove that there is a market need, and an enthusiastic audience, for this bike. We have experienced the Cargo Node, and fallen in love in with the freedom and magic of the bike. We think you will too.
So if you're interested in cycling, cargo carrying or simply a more sustainable transportation, please back our campaign and tell your friends.
Risks and challenges
Jointly, Tern & Xtracycle ship bikes each year to over to 75 countries. We’re experts at building bikes and getting them to their riders. We are confident that we will ship on time because we are tapping into our existing, proven factory and supplier network. Moreover, we’ve already completed testing and the factory already has our bill of manufacturing. We’re just waiting for your support. As soon as the Kickstarter campaign is complete, our factory will order parts and start building the bikes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
