I've worked for eight months trying to complete a 5' x 6' pen & ink and watercolor drawing of an fantastical architectural interior I call BIG CANAL. For the past twenty years I've precariously balanced a full-time job with my art career. But as of Nov. 10, 2014, I quit my job to concentrate solely on my art. I intend to kickstart a new level to my career as an artist with this campaign. Less time working for The Man means more time creating new work in my studio. In the eight months it took me to complete BIG CANAL, I now have the time to create six times as much work, ultimately culminating in a solo exhibition of similar drawings.
Some of the funds generated by this Kickstarter campaign will allow me to publish a high-quality 25" x 30" print of BIG CANAL so I can share it with the world. The prints and art rewards will be mailed out Dec. 10 - Dec 15 so you should have everything by Dec. 25.
I started making these architectural drawings about fifteen years ago but I had never attempted one as intricate as BIG CANAL. After seeing how children interacted with a fun kid’s book I illustrated for McSweeney's (The Clock Without a Face co-authored with geniuses Mac Barnett (his TED talk is here!) and Eli Horowitz (of Silent History fame!) I was fortunate enough to be asked to make a similar piece for the waiting room for the new Johns’ Hopkins Children’s Hospital in Baltimore, MD. While I am thrilled that the piece is on permanent display in the main reception area room of the hospital, I wanted to be able to share one of these large architectural drawings with those not able to see the actual watercolor in person.
Another thing I can't seem to stop drawing are gross/lovely pink donuts, sometimes in embarrassingly compromising positions. If you fund my campaign enough to receive your own copy of the print, you and a loved one just might spend HOURS together pouring over the rooms in the composition, seeking and finding hidden donuts sprinkled, tossed and violently thrown around. Incidentally, I'm offering your very own custom drawn/watercolored donut as one of the campaign rewards. I'll send you a form to fill out so I know exactly what you want and how you want it.

Another thing I make in my studio are 'artist books'. Here's a recent example of a one-of-a-kind book:
I owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to my friend John Culhane for helping me launch this campaign - especially all the video editing. THANK YOU JOHN!!
Risks and challenges
Unless I break my right arm or lose both my eyes, I'm pretty sure I can fulfill all of the reward obligations people have signed on for in a timely manner. I'm going to try super (duper) hard to send stuff out so campaign backers have their rewards in time for the holidays, but I can't promise it'll be there by then.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
