A series that I came up with over 11 years ago while I was still in High School. It's an incredible story about a troubled teenage girl who runs into someone that changes her life forever. The events that take place not only changes her outlook on life but also gives her the inner strength she never knew she had.
The main protagonist is 14 year old Inez Jozlyn. She was born and raised out in Queensbridge, a rough housing project in the New York City borough of Queens. The title "Tephlon Funk!" means in order to overcome obstacles in life, you need to be strong and stand out among the crowd.
I'm a huge fan of Hip Hop & Anime. I always felt that there weren't enough stories out there that were able to successfully mix the two mediums seamlessly. Bring the best of both worlds into one dope project.
I wanted the story to take place in New York City. Specifically Queensbridge since this was heavily inspired by "Illmatic." I've never seen an NYC based cartoon that really captured the true essence of living in this big city.
I thought "Why not have the lead character be someone down to earth that's believable and people care about?" which is what influenced me to put together "Tephlon Funk!"
An Artist and Writer from New York City. His inspirations include Akira Toriyama, Osamu Tezuka, Katsuhiro Otomo, Bengus, Akiman, Kentaro Miura & Hayao Miyazaki.
Stephane’s biggest influence would have to be Nas. Specifically his 1994 debut album "Illmatic" which finally pushed him to create "Tephlon Funk!”
This is his 1st project which he hopes to help inspire and influence others. A true fan of both Hip Hop and Anime. Over 10 years later, he’s now ready to take the next step.
A French Artist from Paris, France born and raised loving animated movies, comics, mangas and video games. He's always had a great passion for Japan and Japanese culture.
His favorite inspirations are Satoshi Kon, Naoki Urasawa, Hayao Miyazaki, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and Toshihiro Kawamoto.
After animation school, he's worked on mobile video games and several animation projects. Now he’s Illustrating and doing character design for "Tephlon Funk!" along with his personal French comic influenced by manga called "Lapsis"
A French Graffiti Artist from Paris who grew up with Franco-Belgian traditional comics ‘till he discovered mangas and American comics strips. A true slap.
His inspirations come from Hip Hop culture, especially the 90’s, along with Katsuhiro Otomo, Humberto Ramos, William Vance, Masamune Shirow, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Fransisco Herrera, Uderzo and many others!
Since animation school, he’s working with a collective of Artists teaching graffiti and drawing to kids in Youth Centers, doing canvas, walls frescoes for City Halls, associations, or himself. He’s also working with his bro’ Tako on a “few things” you probably heard about now!
All in all, we're just artists who have a huge passion in Anime, Manga, and great music. Which is what makes this project so important to us.
Through Kickstarter, I wish to self publish this 130 page book and show that people are looking for a great story which not only they can relate to, but one that has a diverse set of characters.
There are not enough cartoons out there that are really pushing the envelope. I also want to provide the fans and backers with their rewards for supporting Tephlon Funk.
Cause at the end of the day, its all about the ones who support you. Whether its one 1 fan or a million. As you all know publishing a book can be expensive and time consuming. If this campaign is successful, I can use the funds to print and self publish the book :)
Here's a breakdown of where all the proceeds will go for Tephlon Funk. As you can see, a large percentage of this will go to putting together the incentives for the fans, you guys.
Yes! We're looking to make this into a full-fledged anime series. As either a stretch goal or a second campaign dedicated to the animation. We might already have 2 studios that's expressed interest in animating the pilot.
Gonzo Animation from Tokyo, Japan and JM Animation, from Seoul, South Korea. Gonzo is best known for their work on "Afro Samurai" and "Bayonetta: Bloody Fate." JM is best known for their work on "The Boondocks" and "Avatar: The Last Airbender"
My longterm goal is to eventually make this into an animated series whether its online or on Television so long as it's available somewhere for the fans to watch. I am very confident that this campaign will succeed and that this is unlike anything you guys will ever see out there.
We're not trying to just make an awesome manga. We're looking to make this into a full-fledged franchise!
Risks and challenges
In all honesty, this is a very daunting task. We kept this under wraps for a very long time. Which is why we decided to take this on using Kickstarter.
We wanted to be very straightforward and honest about both this project and the tough road ahead. Thank you for taking your time to check out our project and have a blessed day!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
