Hi, I'm TenChiGin, and I love writing stories.
Last year, during a ferry crossing to the Isle of Wight (on a call-out to repair some equipment at the hospital) I started writing a story for the son of a dear friend. The story ended up being 17 pages (4800 words) and took about 4 hours to write (I was lucky to have great inspiration). Ever since, I have wanted to do something similar.
This project is my contribution to the make/100 campaign series on Kickstarter. It's very simple really.
Step 1 - You pledge. There are four tiers to consider:
(T1) - Just a PDF copy of all the campaign stories compiled into a single volume.
(T2) - A 5-6 page short story (about 1500 words), written about you. You will get an individual PDF copy of the story (with extras) plus a copy of the Tier 1 compilation PDF.
(T3) - A 10-12 page story (about 3000 words), written about you. You will get an individual PDF copy of the story (with extras) plus a copy of the Tier 1 compilation PDF.
(T4) - A 12-15 page story about two people. You will get an individual PDF copy of the story (with extras) plus a copy of the Tier 1 compilation PDF.
Step 2 - Tell me your name (or the name of the person you want me to write about, if this story is a gift) and gender. Just your first name will do. And please don't make one up. I want to write about "real" people in "unreal" situations. :-)
Step 3 - Tell me your age group ( 0-5, 6-12, 13-19, 20's, 30's etc.) or your actual age. This is so I can write the story in the appropriate 'voice' and in a style that the reader will understand (particularly important for stories for/about younger children).
Step 4 - Tell me your fantasy role, favourite TV/film/book genre, or favourite TV/film/book character for you to interact with...
e.g. dark comedy, drama, romance [yuck!], historical, hysterical, science fiction, fantasy, comic book, police/crime, vampires/werewolves... The choice is up to you.
Step 5 - I write a story.
What could be simpler than that?
Also, if you send me an image or picture of yourself, I will morph or modify it and include it in the story.
Every story will be unique . . . even if a dozen of you ask to be riding dragons with the Dothraki hoard . . .
. . . Yeah, okay . . . maybe something a bit more age appropriate than that...
The story will be built around the information you give me.
As an example of my work, in the Updates section of the campaign, I will publish pages from the story I wrote on the ferry. The 'character' (who I had not actually met, but knew some details from his Mum) is a 10 year old, mad keen Dr Who fan, and I wrote it as a surprise gift. He and his family and friends were delighted with the result.
So, this is your chance to have a unique, personalized story, for you or for a friend or child, that I hope will inspire you to seek and live out your dreams.
Thanks for looking.
[BTW, that was my first attempt at creating an animation, so please view it kindly. ;-) ]
Risks and challenges
I can only think of three things that could delay meeting the delivery date:
1. How quickly I get the details from individual backers.
2, Increased loading at work. This happens from time to time as I have a broad skills portfolio and I'm never quite sure what I'll be needed to do next.
3. Research time. If I am not immediately familiar with a subject I like to do my research so that I can accurately write meaningful details . . . rather than just make random stuff up. (That's in a different book, for another campaign...)
