About

In Necronauts, 1 to 3 players each controls their own squad of death explorers, the Necronauts, pitted against a single opposing player, the Deity of Death. The Necronauts are human explorers invading the Realms of Death in an attempt to steal occult knowledge and learn the secrets of mortality, while the Deity of Death must protect her secrets and slay the Necronauts before they can escape!

The Necronauts are highly customized squads of soldiers, scientists and magicians, while the Deity of Death can be chosen from a pool of many occult Deities, each with her own set of monsters, cards and abilities.

Please note that anything bearing the Kickstarter Exclusive logo is an exclusive reward for Kickstarter backers. Any remaining models will only be available at special events and conventions.

Add-Ons can be added to any pledge level during checkout for the additional cost listed on the add-on.

The Deity of Death player controls a single macabre Deity chosen at the start of the game. Each Deity is highly unique with her own monsters, deck of cards and abilities, offering completely different ways to crush the Necronauts!

Sk’Zaak is the goddess of crypts, tombs, ossuaries and burial. Her monsters are mostly slow moving (excepting the Crypt Hound) and heavily armored. Sk’Zaak excels at preserving her monsters, summoning monsters from walls and monoliths, and transforming any Realm of Death into a Crypt where her monsters are far more dangerous.

Mycothis is the goddess of rotting, decay, fungus and entropy. Her monsters hold enemies down with roots, release dangerous spores and eat corpses. Mycothis focuses on wearing down the Necronauts over time with rot, spreading damaging miasma and diseases while zoning her enemies around the board.

Gor’Kuk is the goddess of savagery, bloodshed, massacres and murder. She focuses on combat and filling her legendary blood chalice, which she drinks to cast extra powerful spells. Her monsters are ferocious beasts that cause chaos and panic in the Necronauts’ ranks.

Each Necronaut player controls an entire squad of characters (up to four in a single squad) rather than just one adventurer.

All Necronauts have their own weapons and/or spells, a utility item card and a class card, ensuring that no two squads of Necronauts will be the same, and that squads can be built for many play styles and tackle many challenges.

Classes give each individual Necronaut something extra, such as bonus attributes, spellcasting capabilities and squad-wide benefits.

Weapons are used to slay horrific monsters, blow open passages and destroy monoliths.

Items have many uses, such as mobility, armor, healing and squad-based effects.

Spells provide powerful utility like healing, moving objects, blessings and more.

While the Necronauts are highly trained and can be equipped for any situation, they are also humans and thus mortal. If a Necronaut is killed, she does not come back!

Past the stars and material realms of our dimension lie the Realms of Death, a shifting multiverse of absolute cessation and darkness. Mortals are strictly forbidden here, and no living creatures have ever gained access to this unholy realm – until now.

Each Realm is a 20” x 20” game board with unique terrain, environment art, hazards and rules. They are highly dangerous environments for the Necronauts, but the Deity of Death’s monsters are right at home in these horrific planes. Some examples of the many hazards include hoary statues that freeze Necronauts in their steps, terrible temple-dwelling lizard daemons and mind-melting fogs.

The Necronauts core game comes with 5 distinct Realms of Death!

Pre-Game Drafting: A game of Necronauts begins with a brief, though important, drafting phase. First, a randomly chosen Realm of Death game board is revealed and set up with all environmental tokens.

Next, the Necronaut players draft class cards for each Necronaut in their respective squads. Because the first Realm of Death has already been revealed, the Necronaut players can intelligently draft classes that best deal with the hazards of that unique environment.

After classes are chosen, the Deity player chooses which Deity of Death she would like to play as, noting the Necronaut classes she will be up against.

Finally, the Necronaut players now choose equipment for their Necronauts (weapons, spells and items), intelligently drafting against the chosen Deity of Death.

After the drafting phase, the Necronaut players place their squads on the Realm of Death game board. Now the game begins!

Necronauts Play: Each round of Necronauts is broken up into three phases: Upkeep, Necronauts and Deity. During the Necronauts phase, every Necronaut performs two actions, such as moving, attacking, resting, trading, using items, casting and more. Necronauts may perform more than two actions in a single round by sacrificing precious stamina points, leaving them tired and vulnerable to dangers until they rest.

The Necronauts attempt to gather valuable artifacts and souls, complete the Realm of Death’s objective and sub-objectives, destroy or endure monsters and finally escape the current Realm of Death via group teleportation.

The ultimate goal of the Necronauts is to gather 7 Knowledge of Death cards, representing the occult knowledge stolen from the afterlife, and escape the Realms of Death.

Deity of Death Play: During the Deity Phase, the Deity of Death player gains power to spend on cards and monsters, draws cards to play, and summons and controls monsters. Each Deity has a unique deck of 20 cards to play, each of which can be played as an immediate effect or a long-term mastery. Effects happen immediately and are then discarded, whereas masteries stay in play and provide the Deity and her monsters continual benefits.

Monsters are controlled very similarly to Necronauts, and each monster can perform two actions each turn, such as moving, attacking and using unique abilities. Monsters pose a very formidable threat to the Necronauts, and most monsters can slay a Necronaut with only a few strikes!

The Deity of Death’s goal is to slay all of the Necronauts before they can gather 7 Knowledge of Death cards and win the game.

Necronauts has been heavily tested. The invaluable feedback from the play testers allowed us to create a fairly honed version of the rules of the game. A version of the Alpha rules are available as a downloadable PDF. Nevertheless, please note that this is still an Alpha version of the rules and may be subject to change.

For the delivered game, we are committed to the creation and maintenance of a community, feedback-driven digital rulebook that allows us to evaluate and appropriately incorporate the suggestions of the people whose opinions matter most - those who actually play the game.  By offering a digital rulebook, the rules for Necronauts will be robust, always current and easily accessible.

**Please note that this is an Alpha rulebook. Final rulebook will have many clarifications, edits, and of course great visual design and art.**

We are extremely excited to bring you such an awesome board game, and we sincerely thank you for your support. Here are our promises to you:

Quality: All game pieces and components will be of very high quality, comparable to board games from major publishers, with no corners cut.

Transparency: We consider all feedback and criticism a blessing, and engage in fully transparent communication with our backers and community. Should any issues arise, you will know immediately what the issues are and our plans to tackle them.

Testing: Necronauts has been through rigorous playtesting. Both testing and balancing will continue until the game is shipped, with changes being made based on your feedback, and shown in our digital rule books.

Fulfillment: Our funding goal is what we need to make this game, no higher, no lower. We guarantee to fulfill and ship Necronauts, all add-ons and all unlocked stretch goals, if our funding goal is met, regardless of the costs to us.

Shipping: Shipping is in addition to the Death Defier and Living Lord pledge levels and will charged after the Kick Starter campaign has ended and the initial goal has been reached. Final shipping costs cannot be accurately calculated and negotiated until the final contents, including unlocked stretch goals, have been determined.

Risks and challenges

As Necronauts is Tempest Tome’s first game release, there are of course going to be risks, but we know we have fully prepared and accounted for them, both on our own and with the assistance of experienced project leaders and manufacturers.

Manufacturing - We have researched, contacted, and prepared manufacturers to create our game with the highest quality materials we can afford, from miniatures to cards and boards. We are fully confident in our manufacturers to deliver on time, and as requested.

Shipping – Shipping speed and costs are extremely important to us, to ensure that backers are receiving what they've paid for as quickly as possible, that it arrives in perfect condition and that the shipping costs are not high.

Quality – Necronauts has been extensively play-tested by numerous public play-testers (both gamers and non-gamers) and friends alike since its inception over two years ago. We will continue to balance and test before shipping so the backer community has time to provide feedback, which will be integrated in our digital rulebook.

Art – With the exception of four boards, all of the final art assets for the base game are complete and in the game. All remaining artwork needed to support unlocked stretch goals will be completed and integrated.
