WILD MAN Research + Lecture Series Tour
In the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014, I will be touring with my new book "Island of Memory" throughout North America to deliver a reading + presentation based on my work, and to discuss the dynamics, process and possibilities of illustrated narratives in geographical, historical and ecological storytelling. In addition, I will be conducting historical and natural history research, working on new drawings and gathering relevant geographical and anthropological information as well as material from various institutions in preparation for the "Island of Memory" follow-up: "WILD MAN - Volume 2: Sea of Time".
My KS project will support travel funds, art supplies, and technology throughout the tour, as well as research and institutional facility access. The tour schedule begins October 25 at the Sequential Artists Workshop in Gainesville, Florida, proceeding northward to stops at Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia, the Durham Comics Festival, Kutztown University, the Comic Arts Brooklyn Festival in New York City, the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont and the Librairie D+Q in Montreal. Additional dates with Texas State University, the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at Ohio State University, the University of Arizona, and the Chicago Institute of Art are being arranged, as well as academic research visits with the American Museum of Natural History, The Smithsonian Institution archives, the Oregon Historical Society, the University of Georgia, Duke University, and Dartmouth College.
Risks and challenges
I believe I have established realistic goals towards funding this project, and foresee no problems. This is an educational project that seeks to expand the dialogue about illustrated narratives and comics. But it is also an endeavor designed to support high-quality research and an effective dissemination of traditional ecological knowledge, historical context, and scientific information within my work.
My first WILD MAN KS delivered me safely to the Aleutians on a drawing expedition. The research and exposure to natural environments in the North Pacific that informed my process subsequently enabled the completion and publication of the book that became "WILD MAN, Volume 1: Island of Memory", which I believe established a precedent that will secure confidence in backers for another successful KS campaign.
