About this project
We hit our target of $50,000 with 20 days to spare, which means we’re going to reach a bit higher! If we can hit our stretch goal of $75,000, we will upgrade the Dough Universe controller to a design that integrates with building block systems (including name brand!). Future Inventors will be able to build their controllers into block constructions - adding light, motion, and sound to even more creations.
Please keep sharing the campaign on Twitter and on Facebook with your network - every pledge gets us closer to world dough-mination! Thank you again - our Dough Universe would be incomplete with you guys!
With the Electro Machines kit, budding engineers learn about rotation and mechanical movement by building whizzy race cars and spinning robots!
The Dough Universe app brings the world of dough and tech together through interactive storytelling, fun games, and dozens of activities for little inventors to work through - keeping them busy for months to come.
65% of children will be in jobs that haven’t been invented yet, and the best way to prepare them is to spark their interest in STEAM principles early. Dough Universe combines physical and digital worlds to get kids building, designing and mastering the world around them.
We were featured on TheDadLab for Toy Review Tuesday!
And we’ve been covered in some other great places…
As parents, we know that finding toys that are simultaneously fun and educational can be tricky but if you think about it, the aspects of the Dough Universe that provide STEAM education are what also makes the toys super-fun and inspiring. Dough for a start is tactile and malleable.
The beauty of the Dough Universe is that it combines science and art within digital and physical worlds. Kids are inspired to create dough creatures, instruments, anything that they can think of and all the while they’re learning valuable scientific principles and gaining new vocabulary.
The individual toys teach kids about specific electronic principle - Light illuminates the concept of circuits, Sound explores resistance and Machines introduce mechanics. The stories in the tablet app bring this all together in a highly visual way that will get kids excited about the new concepts they are discovering. Productive screen time for all!
So, just who are these crazy, wonderful people behind Dough Universe we hear you ask?
Well, first off less of the crazy talk! But seriously, we’re a close bunch of educationalists, designers, marketers, sales and operations peeps who all have one thing in common. A love of doughnuts. OK, two things in common, doughnuts and a strong belief that the toy sector does not currently serve children and our societal needs as they should. There are still too many ‘blue’ and ‘pink’ retail aisles (bluergh!) and too many toys that pay lip service to the technological change that surrounds us.
We’re changing this one toy at a time. What makes us different is our commitment to listening to children and parents through every step of the product development process. Their input is invaluable. Our products are what they are because of the time and thought that our community put into helping us make the most awesome toys we possibly can. Or put another way, we’re a team of 25 people with an extended family of Tech Will Save Us diehards!
We still have a long way to go to change the toy sector but the future is bright thanks to the dedication of people like you who are helping to make Tech Will Save Us a special part of children’s lives.
Our work to invent toys that encourage STEAM learning is only possible because of the many wonderful people who have influenced us over the past 4 years. In particular, the incredible work of AnnMarie Thomas and the Playful Learning Lab at the University of St. Thomas who created Squishy Circuits™, an inspirational precursor to our Electro Dough range. We are fortunate to be able to have spoken with AnnMarie and a number of researchers during the development of the Dough Universe.
All of us in the STEAM toy field owe a great deal of gratitude to the likes of Jean Piaget, Seymour Papert and Maria Montessori. Their visionary work and passion for learning is at the heart of all of our toys.
We launched, shipped and delivered our 2016 campaign, so you know you're in good hands. Last year we delivered 6 weeks late. That wasn’t good enough but just like 84% of other Kickstarter creators we ran into production issues. We’ve learnt a lot from that experience and improved our manufacturing and distribution processes to ensure it won’t happen again.
Risks and challenges
Everyone says it; “hardware is hard”. This is true, and we love it! For over three years we have been building a product business with hardware, software and kids at the center of it.
We have shipped over 100,000 kits to over 97 countries and have designed a team around making sure we can deliver in bulk and have partners to provide the best end-to-end experience. From the out of the box experience, to our tight supply chain and our customer satisfaction and support.
Of course, there is always the real possibility of things going wrong, and challenges do arise – which is why we have an experienced team of product designers, product managers, manufacturing specialists who are passionately building the best process to deliver the best products.
We will deliver Dough Universe with the same detail, quality and robust educational resources that we have become known for. Our community knows that we strive to have the happiest most satisfied customers, and we will welcome our new backers with the same love and high quality support. Take a look at some of our TrustPilot reviews and feedback to see for yourself.
