The Arcade Coder is a tactile, programmable game console, empowering families to become confident and seriously playful games designers. This revolutionary new way to play and invent games will ignite everyone’s imagination and totally transform family game night forever.
The Arcade Coder is a 12” x 12” board with 144 multi-coloured LED buttons that are all fully programmable and controllable. An evolution of the traditional board game, the Arcade Coder teaches kids aged 6+ (and their grown-ups!) easy-to-learn block coding and how to design their own games.
The more families play, the more they learn. There are step by step tutorials to complete, accessed via the free Games Studio app (available for iOS iPads at launch and Android tablets in February 2020) and new projects and challenges are unlocked along the way. You can customize games using pre-coded games or invent brand new ones, totally from scratch using Sandbox Mode!
Getting started with the Arcade Coder is easy… fully equipped with a rechargeable battery lasting for 6 hours with average use and including over 500 hours of content including a range of ready to play classic games like Pong, Snake and Whack-A-Mole, the fun begins straight out of the box for 1, 2, 3 or 4 players… the whole family!
Each level is more challenging than the next, which means coding and creative problem-solving skills are tested at every turn. Once all of the skill badges have been collected, you’ll be crowned Games Master.
Empower kids to become a confident game designer! The Arcade Coder teaches kids the principles of game design and block-coding. Kids also learn the foundation of game mechanics, like speed and point systems through the Games Studio app. See below for a list of all currently available projects:
And loads more projects coming soon.
In addition to teaching kids game mechanics, the Arcade Coder also offers an exciting creative outlet — Painter Mode. In this mode, kids “paint” digital pictures with illuminating, multi-coloured LED lights and animate them with those newfound coding skills. With this tool, kids get to express themselves creatively and artistically.
Testing with kids has always been core to Tech Will Save Us’s product development process. From workshops and research, the team at Tech Will Save Us knew that gaming as a theme was appealing to children of all ages and an amazing way to introduce valuable learning outcomes in a fun and creative way.
According to research compiled by WePC, there are more than 2.5 billion video gamers worldwide and the video games market is expected to be worth over 90 billion US dollars by 2020. The number of kids playing video games is on the rise too. 91% of kids aged 2 to 17, approx 64 million, are turning to video games to entertain themselves. While it’s evident video games are rising in popularity year on year, Tech Will Save Us’s aim was to create an experience that would unleash creativity and teach kids the design process behind the game rather than continue to fuel the trend for passivity.
Carefully designed to use the screen as a tool and not a medium for creating, the Arcade Coder addresses many parents concerns with solo screen time amongst their children. Time and time again in testing, when kids and families have played with these seamless physical digital experiences none of them ever saw the Arcade Coder as 'screen time'.
Further exploration identified a need in both children and parents for tactile digital experiences that offered more than just an iPad screen and encouraged spending time together as a family enjoying them. According to the 2018 Lego Play Well report, 95% of parents said play builds stronger family bonds.
65% of children will be in jobs that haven’t been invented yet, and the best way to prepare them is to spark their interest in STEAM principles early. The Arcade Coder combines the fun of playing with the love of learning to prepare kids to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
As parents, we understand how tricky it can be to find toys that are both entertaining and educational. Especially in an increasingly digital world. The Arcade Coder merges the digital and the physical by giving kids the possibility to design their own games and play them instantly.
The Arcade Coder aligns with both UK and US national curriculums for Design and Technology. At that critical time in middle school when many students lose interest in STEAM subjects, the Arcade Coder allows kids to engage with these subjects through fun, creativity-driven video game projects.
Don’t take our word for it… check out what these industry experts have to say about the Arcade Coder and the importance of coding, creativity and family time.
