Build your own light-up pop-up solar system card.
Learn to build simple circuitry and paper engineering while making a greeting card for someone you love!
The kits will include all the electronic components and pre-cut paper shapes to build the card, and feature online instructions with detailed photo illustrations, tips, and explanations of the skills learned.
Learn how to:
- Assemble the card using paper engineering techniques

- Model our Solar System - with artistic license*! ;-p
A new design: Our Solar System!
Inspiration: The Voyager Story
In August and September 1977, the Voyager mission launched two spacecraft. The original plans for the mission were to flyby and study Jupiter and Saturn, but Voyager 1 and 2 have given us so much more - close up pictures of Uranus and Neptune, and our first understanding of interstellar space - a place beyond our Sun's influence.
With them we sent a cultural snapshot and map toward our home on two golden records in case they encounter intelligent extra-terrestrial life.
It's the ultimate inspiration to keep learning, exploring and breaking boundaries. Just as the golden records point home, in the card kit the Voyager serves as a switch to illuminate the sun and show our place in the universe:
Funding this campaign will also help me create a set of online instructions with animated .gifs to illustrate the building process. I'll take the time to set up great shots so you can see exactly how all the pieces fit together. They will be fun, engaging, and easy to understand.
Here's a snapshot of me building the prototype, so you can get a feel for what the making process is like:
Why I need you!
Manufacturing kits takes time and money, first, to buy custom dies to cut out the shapes precisely and give the fold lines that nice embossed crease. Second, It's a lot of work to create excellent instructions for each card kit. If the campaign is really successful, I can do extra things like make bonus videos and gifs that go deeper into each subject - something I love to do! (So please tell your friends, teachers, and girl scout leaders about my work! Thank you :))
Why am I doing this?
I'm Natasha - the designer behind TechnoChic tech-craft kits. With my kits, I hope to share my love for paper engineering and electronics and also to bring the DIY worlds of craft and tech together. I've worked on tech teams with many more guys than gals, and I believe that combining these disciplines will help balance the gender gap in the tech industry. If we keep thinking of certain activities as being for "girls" and for "boys" we will miss out on many people finding their true calling. :)
I'm so excited to create this kit. This is my first kit that is based on a field of science, and I want to expand on this theme too! I hope you will join me on this journey!
More from TechnoChic:
To help reach my goal in this campaign, I'm offering other TechnoChic tech-craft kits that I've produced with the help of Kickstarter backers in the past (if that's you - thank you!) :-D I hope you will find more than just the Space card kit super cool!
TechnoChic tech-craft kits:
Make a light-up pop-up card with the phrase "You light my heart" and a light-up heart.
Make a light-up pop up card with the phrase "You would even say it glows!" and a pop up Rudolph with light-up nose.
Make a light-up pop-up card with the phrase "Let it glow!" and a glowing light-up snowflake.
Make a light-up pop-up card with the phrase "Merry Xmas!" and a light-up Xmas Tree star.
Make your own DIY Flashy Flower - a light up flower pin you design, build and wear! Kits include materials to make 10 pins and are perfect for special occasions - from birthday parties to prom to science class.
Blinky Bow Ties
Make your own DIY Blinky Bow Tie that you design, build and wear. Kits include materials to make 10 blinking bow ties each, so they're perfect for bachelor parties, school dances, or showing your geek chic side!
As a reward for backing this project, I've put together some packages of kits that I think you will enjoy!
If you would like to support this project further and help me put more educational materials online, please consider adding $20 to your reward level --- for being so generous, you will be sent this exclusive 5 x 7 print of the Voyager illustration from the card and Saturn as photographed by Voyager to put in an inspirational place at work or at home. Thank you!
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THIS JOURNEY WITH ME!

* Yes, artistic license. It would be really hard to capture the actual scale of our solar system in a card - with the sun this small, the planets would be super tiny (and I wouldn't want you loosing any planets in the carpet!) My goal is to inspiring the awe and wonder of the planets instead of being super accurate. I'm proud to be an artist inspired by science. :)
Risks and challenges
I'M PREPARED TO MAKE THIS PROJECT GREAT!
I've worked very hard to foresee the costs, risks and challenges the project will face. I will be relying on manufacturers and suppliers that have been working with me to determine the costs and timelines for this project. I believe they will be able to provide their products and services within the timeline of this campaign. If anything unforeseen happens, I promise to keep excellent communication, and clearly define any changes. :)
The road to a product can be bumpy or smooth - but I hope you'll join me and enjoy the ride! I love sharing my process with backers, so I hope you'll find backing this campaign interesting and fun!
NOTE TO INTERNATIONAL BACKERS:
Some countries may charge you a customs fee to receive your shipment. Please contact me if you need help determining if a customs fee applies and how much it will be. Your items will ship from Jersey City, New Jersey, USA.
I'd like to be honest and say that international shipments are tricky and some get stuck in the mail or come back to me - it's just unfortunately the way it is. If an item is returned to me, I will refund the cost of the kit minus the cost of shipping (because I have already spent that money).
