About this project
Guide your Tribe in its struggles to survive and prosper! Tribes: Early Civilization is a board game for 2-4 players (plus solo) experiencing the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze ages in 40 minutes. It is designed by gaming industry veteran Rustan Håkansson (Nations, Nations: The Dice Game, Dungeon Rush etc.) and illustrated by Swedish comic book illustrator Lennart Moberg (Fantomen, Buster etc.).
Players start with a small tribe and the very basics of civilization. During the game they invent new technologies, explore new land, fend off invaders and survive catastrophes. The tribe that first emerges as a true civilization wins!
What makes Tribes: Early Civilization a great game?
- Fast gameplay - low downtime and very quick turns
- High player interaction - focus is on interacting with the other players, not with the game
- High replay value - lots of variability from interlocking game mechanisms
Or see what Rahdo has to say about the prototype:
[UPDATE: Both Rahdo and many other backers and testers (join us at dev.teatimeproductions.se to see how games are made) have had great feedback on layout, gameplay and rulebook (thank you especially to Mark Thomas!). The tweaks have improved the game a lot, which is why there are differencies between what you see in the video and in components and rules). Special note about 2-player game commented on by Rahdo: there have been important changes in how these aspects work.]
Pledge now to help us make it a reality! Estimated delivery is July 2017, individual packages shipped from Sweden.
Time for tea! pledge is 370 SEK, ~ $41 USD // $55 CAD // $54 AUD // €39 // £34
Shipping for EU is 100 SEK, ~ €10 // £9
Shipping for US, Canada, Norway, Switzerland is 130 SEK, ~ $14 USD // $19 CAD // $19 AUD // €14

Shipping to some places in Sweden is free, see far below.
Deluxe Teapot pledge is 1000 SEK, ~ $113 USD // $149 CAD // $146 AUD // €105 // £91, with free shipping.
Multi tea pledge is 1850 SEK, for a 5-pack, to reduce shipping cost. We can only ship to EU (shipping cost ~€21, total pledge ~€215) and USA/Canada (shipping cost ~$37, total pledge $245).
Here is a very basic overview, for more details please watch the videos or read the rulebook (not linked yet).
If the game is funded we hope to get partners that will allow the game to enter normal distribution. If seashells upgrade from cardboard to wood are unlocked they will be unlocked for everyone. At 2500 backers we have a surprise! All pledge levels except the first (10 SEK) are counted towards unlocking the stretch goals. (Note: previously double-sided game board was a stretch goal, it is now included for everyone.)
Here are two previews (one in English and one in Swedish) that are very helpful to understanding the game and how it feels to play it. Note that these have prototype components and rules. They notably use gold coins instead of seashells for action selection and identical action tiles instead of differentiated. See the rulebook for the full rules:

Tea Time Productions was founded in Norrköping, Sweden, in September 2016 by Rustan Håkansson, Samuel Sapire and Gustav Gyllensten.
Join our collaboration platform at dev.teatimeproductions.se to see behind the scenes how we and others develop games. Tribes: Early Civilization was developed there and testers provided great feedback, it has a full PNP version posted that you are welcome to check out! You can also follow what we do at our website, on Twitter and Facebook. We'd love to hear from you!
You can listen to a recent interview (Swedish only, from March 1) that Brädspelspodden (Boardgamepodcast) did with Rustan, about Tribes: Early Civilization, the company and the gaming industry.
We are huge fans of BGG, and Rustan even worked there acouple of years ago. So of course there is a BGG page for the game! Rustan has also posted a development diary there explaining many parts of how the design of the game began and more.
At the Deluxe teapot (1000 SEK) level you support us in a major way, thank you! As bonus you get:
- The game and unlocked stretch goals
- Free shipping anywhere in the world that is normally possible to ship to
- Your box will be signed by all 3 founders of Tea Time Productions (you will be able to pledge this level but skip having your games signed if you wish so)
- One nice Tribes+Tea Time T-shirt, size and style will be collected in the survey
- The favourite tea of each of the 3 founders of Tea Time Productions
- 20 metal seashells in addition to the seashells in the normal game box. These are the riskiest part of the production as they will be produced in China. If they are late your package will be sent out without them and the seashells will be shipped when ready, without shipping cost (customs and taxes may still apply).

As soon as we receive the games here in Sweden, we will start packing each game as an individual package. All the games (excluding games being locally picked up) will be sent individually with ordinary post. We have yet to decide which post-carrier to use, we will make sure that each parcel is sent with the safest and fastest option out there (within shipping budget).
The parcels should arrive at the latest three weeks after being sent from Sweden, hopefully even faster. The best shipping option we have right now estimates 1-2 weeks for the whole world.
If you live in Sweden you can avoid shipping charges by choosing to pick up the game at one of the release parties:
Stockholm - Dragon's Lair
Gothenburg - Spel i Focus
Norrköping - Norrköpings brädspelscafé
Linköping - Seriebörsen
To get free shipping you have to select "Christmas Island" as your country. In the survey you must note which release party you will attend. Exact dates depend on when production is finished. If you miss it we'll work it out!
To all backers who actually live on Christmas Island, you have free shipping! Sorry for misusing your country in the shipping list like this :)
Risks and challenges
This is the first Kickstarter from Tea Time Productions and we are new to running Kickstarter projects. We are however very experienced in the board games industry (including designing and distributing games) and with running companies (including a printing company).
Art and layout are done, but there will likely be some minor changes. The plan is to start on pre-production with the printer when the Kickstarter project ends and start production when the money from Kickstarter arrives in early in May. Once produced the games will be shipped to us in Sweden for packing, then we will ship each package individually to backers. Many things can go wrong and while we hope the games will arrive to backers in June, we have set the estimate for delivery to July to be safe.
We have backed Kickstarters where shipping has been delayed by months to save a little money on shipping. We will not take the risk of that happening and will ship directly from Sweden directly to each backer. This means that each backer outside EU is responsible for taxes, customs and other special rules that applies to receiving the game. We have shipping rates for the whole world in our shipping deal but we are limited to where it is possible to ship to at any point in time. If you know you live in a place that is really problematic to ship to from Europe, please talk to us before backing so we can double-check.
Production will be done in Europe, also to reduce risk and to be able to ship faster. There will likely be some minor changes to layout, possibly also to components, as the game is prepared for production.
The metal seashells in the Deluxe Teapot pledge level will be produced in China.
We have no extreme stretch goals or dependencies on other companies. There are no kickstarter-only exclusives that increase production costs (except for the limited higher pledge levels, where costs are accounted for). There are no add-ons that make shipping problematic. If funding is successful we are convinced that we will be able to ship a great game quickly to all backers, but there is no way to make a 100% guarantee. We are very thankful to all backers who are making this game possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
