Progress! And Design! And a Special Surprise! Oh my!

Happy Tuesday everyone!

This is an update full of updates, and we couldn't be happier to be updating! We've been making progress with all the things, and would like to share with you a slice of those things.

A Song of Funds and Legalities

Remember when we mentioned a long time ago that we wanted to get a lot of legal mumbo jumbo out of the way early on so that we could focus on making the best game possible? Well most of that legal mumbo jumbo is all mumbo'd and jumbo'd, and we're well on our way to making the best game possible! We had to gather our party of 5 to venture into Ye Olde Valley of Filing Cabinets and Legal Documents so we could gain access to all of the amazing quest funds provided by you! That's mostly out of the way now so our focus is much more... focused.

Down the Path of Design

So you're probably thinking: "Yes, yes, beautiful, talented internet people. We understand that you lawyer'd it up and signed a bunch of papers that you only half understand. Are you working on that game yet? The one you talked about before? Pulse?"

Yes! We are! We've dived... diven... dove... We've jumped right into design and started separating our world into clearly defined... things. So far, it looks like this:

Isn't it pretty?! We'd love to share with you the contents of these beautiful post-it notes, but there are a lot of spoilers on this wall that we're really excited to not have spoiled. Don't worry, it makes a lot of sense to us, and we'll share tidbits along the way :)

Experimenting With Blindness

To inspire new ways to visualize the world from the perspective of our blind heroine, Eva, we ran a few tests of our own. Each of us brought forward something unique and unknown to the rest. We sat, eyes closed, feeling these unknown objects and describing them out loud. The goal was to understand what colours, sounds, and other substances we associated with specific kinds of objects without being able to see them.

It turns out that sharp edges tend to feel orange, and week-old cooked rice feels like dead ants. Definitely a very cool experiment that led to some interesting concepts we'd love to explore further. Have you ever tried anything like this? We'd love to hear about your discoveries! Quest Rewards!

Now that we've legalized ourselves we have access to the funds, which means we can get to the fun part: spending those funds! We've been talking to a number of plushie manufacturers recently, and have been very pleased with the quality we've seen. We'll be locking one down in the next week or two to get Moko production... rolling..! As for the t-shirts, we're still checking our options and should be finalizing those decisions soon as well.

Art of the Fans

Entirely unprompted, we've been finding tons of Pulse related fan art on the interwebs recently. This is among the most flattering of things. To see people loving what we've created so much that they want to make a rendition of it themselves? That's what we live for as game developers. If you have any Pulse (or Team Pixel Pi?!) fan art, or want to make some, we'd be honoured to feature it on our facebook page and add it to our fan art album. Send us a link to the image and it'll quickly find its way to our hearts. And our facebook page.

Oh, and one last thing...

We were looking for a way to put the player even closer to Eva's perspective. To allow them to experience the mysterious world of the blind even closer, while harnessing the surreal ability to "see" sound. We are happy to announce that we've found that way, and will be bringing it to you with Pulse. Ladies and Gentlemokos, Pulse will support the Oculus Rift:

      If there is Oculus Rift support, can we expect the game to work well in stereoscopic 3D? I tried the demo on my 3D monitor and it worked alright for the most part; there were a few things that rendered at the wrong distance and hurt my eyes though.

      Oh man, Oculus Rift. This project sounds perfect for it! I really need to buy myself one sooner rather than later.

      Also, as for the 'blindness' experiments. I used to spend a lot of time walking around my house in the dark growing up. Mostly because of insomnia, somnambulism, and because I didn't want to wake anyone else up, but also just for the challenge of it. I got very used to extending my senses out to my fingers and toes. Feeling for the edges of steps, measuring my distance by when my hand hit a lightswitch, or when the wall fell away. I have very good spatial perception, so I started to build a 'map' of the house in my own mind, and navigated by tactile landmarks.

      "We have dived" and "we dove" are both correct. Diven was Middle English for "to dive" and was derived from Old English dyfan, the causative form of dufan, meaning "to dive" or "to sink". "...rolling..!" is an abomination for which the Dread Triune Gods of Yn Glish will devour your souls.

      Surely you should give pi cheers?
