We would like to invite you to join us at The City of Games 2018, a 3 day gaming convention in the heart of Bristol City during the 9 - 11 February 2018.
Open Gaming: There will be hundreds of games you can pick up and play during the weekend from the old classics to the latest Gen Con and Essen releases.
Find a Group: Our modern looking for group system will help you find people to play with.
Learn a Game: Our volunteers will be on hand to help teach you new games.
Social Games: In the evenings we'll be running social games such as Werewolf and have a variety of Party games on offer.
Dexterity Games: We will have a selection of dexterity games ready to go including Crokinole, Tumblin-Dice and Pitch Car Racing
Tournaments: We'll be hosting several fun tournaments for people of all levels, including the Dobble championships!
Buy Games: There will be a selection of games on sale at the event.
If you are new to board gaming, or are only familiar with games like Monopoly, Cluedo and Risk then The City of Games is a great opportunity to try something new. Our team of volunteers will be on hand to teach you some gateway games and introduce you to something new.
* All requested games must be in print and attainable from our local game stores. You must submit the game name within 1 month of the Kickstarter ending.
The town records are our way of recording the history of The City of Games.
Each year we will be adding all of those who attended to the Town Records, and we will continue to update this each year.
As a way to further support The City of Games 2018, we are offering unique roles where you will be listed in the Town Records as the role you selected. There are no physical benefits to selecting these roles, but as a thank you, we will offer free standard entry to future events for a set number of years.
Please note, all names entered into the town records must be family friendly and we hold the right to exclude words we believe to be offensive.
* We hope The City of Games will become an annual convention and these roles have been created in order to help us to achieve that. However, we cannot guarantee future conventions will happen and will not be able to offer refunds should we decide to cancel future events. Please see these roles as a way of supporting us, and take the free entry to future events as a nice bonus should they happen.
Throughout the Kickstarter we will be adding more events and guests to the page. If there is anything specific you would like us to do, then please suggest it in the comments!
No Pun Included, a UK based board gaming couple who make funny and informative board game reviews will be our guests for the entire weekend. If you’re not familiar with their videos, then I highly recommend watching some on YouTube! It’s great to have them join us for our first event and hopefully you will get an opportunity to play something with them!
We would like to offer you the chance to take part in a Mega Game or Board Game Jam, but in order to do so we need at least 12 people. So during the Kickstarter we will be giving you the ability to unlock these events by signing up.
How to sign up
1) Please purchase a ticket for The City of Games,.
2) Increase your pledge by £2.
3) Finally send us a message on Kickstarter or leave a message in the comment section.
You need to have a ticket for The City of Games in order to sign up for the Mega Game and Board Game Jam. As we have now sold out of tickets for the convention, I'm afraid these events are no longer available to people without tickets.
Once 12 people have signed up, the event will be unlocked. Both events are limited to 36 people.
The Mega Game will take place on Saturday and the Board Game Jam will start on Saturday and finish on Sunday. I'm afraid this does mean you will only be able to participate in 1 of the 2 events.
To increase your pledge, click the green "manage pledge" button at the top of the page and increase the amount by £2.
The event is being held at Future Inns, which is just outside of Cabot Circus in the centre of Bristol city.
The address of the venue is: Future Inn, Cabot Circus, Bond St S, Bristol. BS1 3EN.
Accommodation can be arrange with the venue through the Future Inns website. Staying at the hotel will grant you 24 hour access to the game rooms, so you wont have to leave when the clock strikes midnight.
Parking is available in the Cabot Circus car park and we have a limited number of discount codes which we can offer to those who request them.
We picked our venue not only because it was great for the event, but because it was in the heart of the city and surrounded by things to do. There are over 20 nearby restaurants, a cinema, escape rooms and a indoor crazy golf centre.
We are working with local companies to offer a more complete experience and want to thank them all for helping us to make The City of Games 2018 happen.
Area 51 will be running a game store throughout the weekend allowing you to pick up new games.
Chance & Counters will be running a social games event on the Saturday evening.
Puzzlair are giving us access to 6 different escape rooms all weekend long.
Auroch Digital are running the Board Game Jam and will be setting the design task for the weekend.
If you are interested in sponsoring the event then please feel free to message us.
The City of Games 2018 is being organised by Frank West and Sara Jorge. Frank is a full time game designer and creator of The City of Kings, Sara is a Biotechnologist and board game enthusiast.
We are investing our own money into The City of Games 2018, so the convention will be happening in 2018 no matter what. We’re here on Kickstarter looking to raise extra money which will help us make The City of Games the best it can be from day one.
The money will go towards growing the games library, organising more events and tournaments, prizes and aesthetics to enhance your gaming experience. We have a whole host of ideas for the venue to help create an amazing space for our community to meet, chat, game, and relax.
Your support on Kickstarter can make it happen.
Refund Policy. Please note, due to the nature of this event once the Kickstarter has finished we will not be able to offer refunds. If you no longer wish to come, we will be happy to transfer your ticket to someone else, or simply change your pledge to a supporter tier.
Risks and challenges
Running a convention can be challenging, so we have been planning The City of Games for nearly 2 years to make sure the event goes as smoothly as possible. We have travelled to countless conventions around the UK, and the world, learning what makes a convention great. We have been talking with the organisers of other events and taking notes from the experiences they have had.
The biggest risk to us is we don’t sell enough tickets, this will make it difficult to add all the nice extras we would like to include, and this is why we are running the Kickstarter. The 2018 event is going to happen no matter what, but with your support we hope we can make this event big enough to turn this into an annual event, putting The City of Games on every gamers map.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
