About

This is Jon Hayt and I would like to first introduce myself as I was the Team Photographer for the Tampa Bay Lightning NHL Hockey Team that was formed in 1992 during the early 90's expansion phase of the NHL. I was the team photographer from 1992 early 2000 and all of my photography was shot on Fujichrome 100 ISO color slide film shot under arena strobe lights set up in the catwalks of the various arenas and triggered from my camera to create beautiful high quality color images of the game and players.

The team was brought to the Tampa Bay area by former hockey stars Phil and Tony Esposito with the backing of a Japanese financial group. The team played their first season in the Exposition Hall at the Tampa State Fairgrounds after converting the main expo hall building into an indoor hockey rink seating approximately 10,425 fans. The Lightning stunned the hockey world with an opening night win over the Chicago Blackhawks and went on to play in two more buildings, the Thunderdome in St. Petersburg, FL and Ice Palace in downtown Tampa, FL while building a great fan base that continues to this day. The archive of images was shot in all three of these buildings (I use their original names for ID purposes) and covers the team's early history.

The photo archive consists of over 75,000 color slides and has been in my possession since the start of the team in 1992 and has languished due to not being scanned as digital images. I am editing the collection down to the most significant photos that represent every player that I photographed during this period along with great player and game action and significant team events. I will also include a good cross section of team staff and the folks that supported the hockey operations during this period. I am estimating that there will be around 10,000 images scanned and ready for archiving. My goal is to place this archive with the Hockey Hall of Fame up in Toronto Canada so that it can be shared with current and future fans, players and the folks that were part of the early years of this team.

I am seeking public funding to edit, process, scan and archive this great piece of NHL hockey history so that it may be preserved and available to hockey fans and the players that made it possible.
