About this project
It is becoming increasingly aware to us that you want to see this book happen, and the $6,000 goal will be met. So if we make it over our goal you'll first get an extra treat (not sure what yet, but once we know it'll probably be a surprise to you). Also Chris and I would love to hit the road! Everything we raise in addition will go toward a book tour; the more we raise the further we'd get to travel and the more we could share Elkbar. We would love to come to your town. So do you think we can make this happen?
UPDATE: ALL PLEDGERS WIN! Chris Fason has just announced we will be giving a hand-drawn post card AND a random signed issue of the acclaimed series Hero Happy Hour while supplies last!
Elkbar: A Brief History
The exact origins are unknown, but around '02-03 in Sand City, CA a plaster mold of a penguin was purchased and given to me. I gave him a name: Elkbar. Soon after I wrote a story about him; he was extraordinary with 3 cool gadgets, but none of the other penguins liked him, so he goes on a journey to find the wise moose Fargo Roberts...and I attempted to start the artwork himself. Failure.
Finding an Artist
In Monterey an artist was found in Mike "Dabo" Lopez. His wonderful graffiti style gave Elkbar a somber swagger and thoughtful tone. But Dabo had to move on to other projects and I got married and moved to Georgia. The state, not the country.
The plaster Elkbar ended up on our mantle.
But when Brave Saint Saturn released their 3rd album I did something I normally don't do: joined the band forum. On it I met Chris Fason who besides being super talented was just an all around swell guy. I sent him the story, and he agreed to work on it, being paid only when it sold.
Well...he wanted to feed his family and pay bills. Can you believe that? So he had to take on other projects and real work. But he and I remained good friends and I had hoped to work with him on other things.
Then Kickstarter arrives... I become familiar with it. And Chris gets a second wind.
Chris Fason is Great
Besides being a great friend he is an awesome illustrator. Here are some of his links and creds, yo.
- 2006 Eisner Nominee for Best Anthology
- Co-Creator with Dan Taylor of acclaimed (web)comic "Hero Happy Hour"
- Created a mini-comic to go my short film "The Dinner Guest"
- Guest chef on the web-series "Two Naked Men Making a Sandwich" (mostly) pre-teen safe
- New artist for the beloved band Five Iron Frenzy (see his work on their Kickstarter page)
A few reasons. It helps get the word out. We can reward those that help. It's all or nothing. If I can't get it all funded, I can only get nothing. But nothing would be lost except my time. Also this is a place were other creative folks get together, and it's great to see all these other ideas!
What Your Money is Paying For
Mostly your money is going to pay Fason what he is worth. Which is a lot. it's also going to go toward publishing, printing, getting an ISBN, distribution and marketing. I plan to do a run of about 250-500. Any funds I raise over my $6,000 goal will go into printing and marketing.
On Dec. 13th. (my birthday) my wife gave birth to our first. I wanted to make this book before, but now with my boy here I really want to make this happen. I want to give him something that is creative, fun, dedicated to him but for the world.
It's never too early to start thanking people. My wife for being awesome and supportive. My father who bought me the penguin plaster mold that started this all. My mother and my sister who got me a nice camera that I shot the video on. She does great photography. The rest of my family for encouraging me. All the people thus far that have clapped me on the back by saying they want to see Elkbar come to life. And I'm not too cool to thank Jesus.
And thank you for reading all this, and for any support you can give.
p.s. About Taylor
Hey. This project isn't about me, I know, but if some of you are interested here is where you can go to learn about me and some other projects I've done or am doing.
