About

THE INSPIRATION

Inspired by street art

This short film project started after seeing a chalk drawing of a dog and a pig, with the words, "The Only Difference is Our Perception." The piece focuses on how humans do, or do not, have emotional empathy with varying animals. Through humor and wit, Two Friends, provides an intriguing look at the stereotypical man's best friend.

"It made me think about our loving relationship with dogs contrasted with how we generally view pigs as just food, and yet they are both sentient beings that have individual personalities and are both capable of learning and feeling emotions." - Rebecca Burnett

THE BACKSTORY

Rebecca and Taryn met in 2017 through the Southern Maryland Independent Filmmakers production group. They first worked on a short film together that year, called The Cable Guy. It was selected to feature in the 2018 Southern Maryland Film Festival. With the success of their first short (and complimenting skills), the pair went on to work together on two more short films: JET and The Monkey's Paw. Both films are currently in post production.

Rebecca (originally from London, UK) is only scheduled to live in the U.S. until the end of 2019. Their advantageous encounter through the SOMD Indie Filmmakers has blossomed into a professional relationship and a personal friendship that will last a lifetime.

Taryn met Nick, Collin, and John through an improv comedy workshop taught by Becky Titus in Leonardtown, MD in 2019. They now perform together with Pancake Crisis, a short-form improv troupe.

The rest of the cast and crew are natural extensions of working in arts and entertainment in the St. Mary's County area. Everyone has worked on one or two projects together before, or is connected by a natural web of networking within the worlds of film and theater.

THE HOW

Our production will span 3 months in total duration. We need your help to pay for preproduction, filming days, post-production, and distribution. Due to Rebecca's timeline of leaving the USA and going back to Australia, we have to go faster on this project than initially perceived. Therefore, we are doing this funding campaign in "real time" for some of it; based on the faith and belief that it will be fully covered.

Our filming will take place in St. Mary's County, Maryland. We are filming interiors at a house, and exteriors at a local park.

After our filming, we will enter one month of post-production. We have meticulous planning with our schedules, budgets, and milestone tracking. After we complete making the short, we will move into distribution.

Your funding will pay for:

Non-union rates for cast and crews (see list of people above) for planning, filming, post-production, set decoration, props, costumes, plant-based craft services, location costs, and film festival submissions.

As backers present themselves, we will move forward on certain components of production. Please see our updates as we go. Each financial milestone that is met, will propel us into the next phase of our planning and production outline.

THE WHY

Around 150 billion animals are slaughtered every year for human consumption. Each one is an individual that feels pain and suffers. We don't need animal-based food to survive, especially as the majority of people in the western world have access to sufficient plant-based foods. We now know that for optimal health, a whole food plant-based diet is proving to be the best for us. (www.nutrition facts.org

There are many forms of animal activism. These are needed to create a kinder world for us all to enjoy, and to aid in ending the human suffering from animal-based industries. The intention of this short film is to play a part in inviting audiences to think about why we love one animal and harm another, because animals are here with us, not simply for us.

"If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others... Why wouldn't we?"                - Edgars Mission

Risks and challenges

Our largest challenges for this project will be time and money (spoken truth to any arts and entertainment project produced in an independent manner). We have a solid budget planned that is logical, practical, and manageable. With crowd funding support, we know we can match our expenditures and income. We are under a time crunch to plan, shoot, and edit, within a span of a few months in order to enter the Southern Maryland Film Festival and the Ottawa International Vegan Film Festival. We have planned a meticulous calendar to meet all of our milestones and deadlines. Our main goal is to build a strong team, who work as partners with creative, professional, and a familial type of support. We know that paying and recognizing top talent is critical in getting our message across, within a medium that can reach many people.
