Camilla d’Errico's visual journey that blends her unique "West Meets East" drawing style with her love of classic poetry and literature

UPDATE:

Hi, everyone! Thank you so much for helping us exceed our goal! We're now well-over our original goal to help cover the creative cost, but remember that the Limited Edition Tanpopo Hardcover will not be available in stores. So if you haven't helped fund a tier with that special edition book, you won't be able to get the book in the future. (Regular editions will be available sometime in 2012).

With only one day left, Camilla has been working hard to finish up the colors on the slipcase image we teased before. Hope you like it. ^_^

Thanks again for all of your support! We couldn't have done it without you!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE:

First of all, thank you again for helping us reach our funding goal!  It is still so humbling to know that that you all believe in Tanpopo.

To demonstrate our gratitude, we want to show you all the New Cover of Tanpopo: Hardcover Edition!

With only one week left, and because you all rock with getting us to 120%, we thought we'd ALSO give you a sneak peek at the special, Limited Edition Slipcase image!  This version is unfinished and only black and white (the final slip case image will be in full color) but we thought we'd show you anyhow!

REMINDER: The limited edition of the book (starting at only $50) will NOT be available in stores - this very unique copy of Tanpopo can only be purchased through THIS KICKSTARTER.

There are still plenty of limited edition books available, but only for one more week!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE:

To thank everyone who helped fund this project, Camilla has made a special thank you video!  Check it out in Update #5!

It is amazing how far we have come with this KickStarter and that we still have 8 days left!  That means there is still time to back this project and get your awesome incentives for the Tanpopo: Hardcover Edition!

That being said, we want to convey that people interested in Tanpopo should consider this KickStarter campaign as a Pre-Order for the Slipcase and Limited Edition signed books.  The books with the slip cases and variant covers will not be available commercially, so get them while they're hot, people!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE:

It it unbelievable that we have reached our goal with 12 days still left in our campaign!  We want to send a HUGE thank you to our wonderful 160 backers that made this possible.

To show all of the fans how much this means to us, we have added 4 AMAZING NEW TIERS!

The pledge that sent us over our goal was the last $175 incentive.  Since this tier was so popular, we have decided to create another $175 tier, which will include the same incentives, but instead of the signed Cover Print, you will receive the signed Art Print (that you can view in the 2nd update.)

And since we had more than a few fans that wanted EVERYTHING, we have created a tier at $200 that includes everything that was in the $175 tier plus BOTH SIGNED PRINTS!

But that's not where it ends:

Because of our fans extraordinary efforts in helping us reach our goal, Camilla had decided to add 2 TOP-LEVEL tiers where a handful of lucky readers can purchase an ORIGINAL TANPOPO PAGE from the book, that will be signed by Camilla.

For $250, you can own an Original page of the Tanpopo: Hardcover Edition (signed) with the hardcover copy of the Tanpopo book

or

For $350 you can own an Original Page of the new Tanpopo book (signed) along with the signed Cover Print, the signed Art Print, the LIMITED EDITION of Tanpopo:Hardcover Edition, plus two plush toys and keychains of Kuro and his shape shifting counterpart Specter.

Thanks again, and make sure to keep checking back for more updates!

UPDATE:

An all-new tier has been added!

You can now back Tanpopo for $45 and receive an 11X17 ART PRINT of the exclusive, new image below that Camilla created just for the Tanpopo: Hardcover Edition.  All prints will be SIGNED and NUMBERED!  So move fast! There is a limited run of 60 prints.

******  Many of you contacted us about the signed 11X17 Art Print of the new image that Camilla created.  Since KickStarter only allows backers to choose ONE incentive, we have decided to create another NEW TIER for those who wanted the art print but did not wish to give up their copy of the book.

We are still only printing 60 copies of this art print, so the quantity of the stand-alone print has been lowered to 25 and there are only 20 of the Book + Art Print combos.

Hurry up and get your SIGNED and NUMBERED art print, now with a copy of Tanpopo: Hardcover Edition for $65!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stories of old combined with Camilla d'Errico unique artistic style bring to life the story of a mysterious young girl, Tanpopo, who goes on a journey to experience true emotion. She is released from the machine that has been her only existence in the hope of finding happiness after making a deal with the devilish Kuro.

The story of Tanpopo is inspired and narrated by passages from classic literature and poetry. The words and images are woven together, telling Tanpopo’s story as she is guided by the Faustian devil, Kuro, on her journey into the world of humanity and what it means to feel.

The overall story arc is based on Faust, by German author Goethe, and the first book’s narration and dialogue contains passages from this historical masterpiece. Each subsequent volume is narrated by a different classic - poem or prose – from around the world. A recurrent theme in the literature is the notion of the "devil" – with a very specific purpose: the use of the character isn’t meant to illustrate good versus evil or to spark religious debate. Instead, Tanpopo is a story about what makes us human, what we perceive, and what defines who we are.

Tanpopo is not an illustrated poem nor is it a reinterpretation of literature. It is a new visual and literary experience that combines a rare, open storytelling format with oriental aesthetics and character development, while bringing long lost or little known classic literature to today’s modern audience – both young and mature.

Tanpopo (the Japanese word for Dandelion) is superhumanly intelligent and inhumanly emotionless. Attached to a mysterious machine, she is ruled by her mind and vast knowledge. But one day, her heart rises up to struggle against her ruling mind. Torn and confused, she now seeks her humanity, longing to feel what other humans feel.

Kuro, disguising himself as The Poodle, hears Tanpopo's lamentations, and promises her that she can experience all human emotions, especially love and happiness. Alas, this kind of offer doesn’t come without a price … Kuro is The Devil in disguise, and he is after Tanpopo’s Soul.

The series follows Tanpopo’s journey into the human world, as she is confronted with the reality of life and death. As she goes out into the world, she meets a variety of characters and is plunged into challenging obstacles.

Will she be able to quiet her highly analytical mind and allow her heart to come to life? Will she be able to accept and embrace the emotions that are rising up within her? Will her quest for love set her free or will it shackle her for eternity?

Kuro, devilishly cute and childishly playful, has a series of surprises in store for Tanpopo, as he changes forms and creates situations that elicit emotional responses in the girl whose soul he craves. Through his trickery, he undergoes various transformations including his boy “Kuro” form, Specter and various other characters.

The goal of this Kickstarter is to fund a print run of both standard and limited edition copies of Tanpopo that will be sent to generous backers all over the world who are kind enough to support a project Camilla d'Errico has been crafting for years.

Although the book will be proudly published under BOOM! Studios, the hardcover printing of both editions, including the limited art prints of the new cover, are quite expensive. By helping fund this Kickstarter, backers will receive books that may someday reach a wider audience, giving Camilla d'Errico a greater opportunity to continue to create future installments of the series.

Each donation is greatly appreciated, and any help spreading word about this project is welcomed whole-heartedly. We thank you for contributing to this special publishing goal, and hope you'll support one of most outstanding independent artists creating today.

Funders outside the U.S., please consider adding $10 to your pledge for shipping. Thanks!
