Hello, I'm Lilly, I founded Tallis to make beautiful accessories from responsibly sourced fur, bringing my passion for sustainability to every product we make. Here's my brother Will, our photographer, and Caitlyn, one of our models.
There are a few fur pom-pom beanies around these days. But we do them properly at Tallis. First of all our beanies are the best of the best – soft and sumptuous 100% cashmere or merino in super cool styles like the slouchy beanie or the beret mini pom.
The second difference is that we believe in only sourcing fur in a responsible way. We know it’s hard to trust where fur comes from, so we made these Tallis hats with pride, explaining below exactly why you can trust them – if you agree with us, support us and get one of our great rewards.
MEET THE TALLIS HATS
We have got four hats for you to choose from. The hats are lovingly hand-made from up-cycled cashmere or merino jumpers, making each one totally unique.

THE STORY BEHIND EACH HAT
Fur is a beautiful, high performance material that needs to be sourced responsibly. All Tallis products are made from responsibly sourced fur. What does that mean? We think it comes down to saying yes to two questions. Do you know where the fur has come from and how the product was made? And; would you be comfortable wearing it based on what you know? To us, it’s about enabling our customers to make an informed decision based on what criteria are important to them. Each of these hats has a story that we think you’ll believe in. Read about how each one is made and pick the one that you’ll wear with pride.
How the Beret Mini Pom is made: This little French hat is hand-sewn by Faith out of 100% merino wool. She buys high quality vintage jumpers and re-manufactures them into our berets in her studio in Portland, Oregon. The mink pom-pom comes from a vintage coat we bought in England and gave to Mr Gale who turned it into 289 mini mink balls. Following a hilarious voyage, during which they popped out of her bag at every opportunity, the 289 mini mink balls came to live in Geneva with Lilly. Sadly one was found later on the rug, no longer a ball, near Tigger. After receiving the berets from Faith, Lilly selects and sews on one of the mini mink balls to complete each one.
We used this vintage mink fur coat to make our mini mink balls because it means not having to use new fur. If we run out of these, we will find another vintage mink coat which pre-dates 1975 (i.e. isn’t fuelling new demand for mink from farms).
How the Impy Beanie is made: This naughty little hat is hand-sewn by Faith out of 100% cashmere. She buys high quality vintage cashmere jumpers and re-manufactures them into our beanies in her studio in Portland, Oregon. The vintage mink pom-poms come from the 289 mini mink balls made by Mr Gale. Who is Mr Gale anyway? Buy our cookie pledge for £10 and find out!
How the Slouchy Sheepy Beanie is made: This gorgeous little hat is hand-sewn by Faith out of 100% cashmere. She buys high quality vintage cashmere jumpers and re-manufactures them into our beanies in her studio in Portland, Oregon. The shearling (sheepskin) pom-pom is hand-made by Lilly in Geneva, Switzerland. We use sheepskin because it is a by-product of the food industry.
How the Slouchy Foxy Beanie is made: This perfect little hat is hand-sewn by Faith out of 100% cashmere. She buys high quality vintage cashmere jumpers and re-manufactures them into our beanies in her studio in Portland, Oregon. The Swiss Red Fox pom-pom is hand-made in Lausanne, Switzerland by Ivan who is Vice President of the Swiss Fur Association. Lilly receives the hats from Faith and sews on the pom-poms from Ivan, her fingers get quite tired and she has to have a cup of tea in between each one.
We use the Swiss Red Fox because its fur is a by-product of an environmental management programme in Switzerland. Following the extinction of the wolf, lynx and bear in Switzerland, and a successful vaccination project by the Swiss government, the native red fox has thrived in the absence of natural population controls. In order to healthily regulate the species, a control system has been introduced by the government. The fur is typically destroyed and wasted, so the Swiss Association of Professional Furriers has begun to buy and promote it as an alternative fur for fashion. CHOOSING YOUR HAT
See more images at the bottom!
Style: You have four styles to choose from (Beret, Impy, Sheepy, Foxy), or you can go for one of our combination packages. We have included lots of images of each style at the bottom of this page. Our website is another great way to explore which style is right for you. Of course if you have any questions while deliberating, feel free to ask me on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Colour: Once you have chosen your hat(s), tell us which colours you want by emailing email@example.com. The available colours are described below and on our website. You can email any time from when you make your pledge up until Friday 12th December (the day after the campaign ends). If we haven’t heard from you by then we’ll try to chase you up, and if not will send you the standard colours given in the lead images above (see Meet the Tallis Hats section).
Sizing: The hats are one size, designed to fit everyone. The beanies are 25cm wide, because they have a slouchy fit where any excess falls to the rear, they fit almost any head size. The berets are equally universal because they have a ribbon tie, meaning their size can be tightened or loosened to almost anything you want, at full stretch they are 28cm across.
If your Tallis hat arrives and just doesn't fit, we will move mountains to exchange it for one that does. Simply email us on firstname.lastname@example.org and we will explain what you need to do to exchange it.
Shipping and timing: As you can see on the right, each hat is available either as a pre-Christmas delivery, or New Year (February 2015). If you want your hat(s) before Christmas, make sure you plck the correct option. Hurry, we've limited these pledges to just 40 hats!
Gift box: This is the gift box. You can get it by choosing the Christmas Shopper or Sponsor Extraordinaire pledges. If you want it for any of the other pledges, please add £10 per hat to your pledge amount, or request it when you choose your hat colour by emailing email@example.com.
WHY I AM LOOKING FOR FUNDING
I have set up this project with a funding goal of £8,000 to invest in two things.
First I need to spend £2,000 to start producing my hats in bulk. That means efficiently sourcing sufficient quantities of raw materials - from cashmere jumpers to vintage fur pieces - and investing in production at scale by building up my small stock of textiles for linings and trimmings, plus packaging and labelling.
I will also use £1,500 to create a budget for partnering with professional designers for the Tallis AW16 collection and developing new products. This might be through collaborations or capsule collections, and I am already talking with designers at London Fashion School. Doing this will enable me to focus on what I do best - the sourcing side, searching our new opportunities in responsible fur.
The rest of the funding (£4,500) will be spent on producing and sending the hats and other pledges. My hope is that these special Kickstarter hats will act as an impetus to kickstart demand of the products even after the campaign has ended. Any funding over the £8,000 target will be spent on producing the extra pledges (57%) with the rest going towards the cost of taking the AW16 collection to Paris Fashion Week (43%)
With your help I’ll be able to get these responsibly sourced, luxury hats off the ground, enabling a more sustainable future for the growing market of fur.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Risks and challenges
We have already produced a number of these hats for sale in Geneva and online. We are therefore confident of being able to provide the hats as described, and are happy with the positive feedback so far received from customers about their quality and sizing.
We have limited the pledges for hats delivered before Christmas to 40, as we believe this is what is achievable in that timeframe, given our current stock and production rate, and the colour varieties we anticipate.
We have not limited the pledges for February delivery as we anticipate the additional three months is all we need to produce the number we expect. If the number of pledges starts to greatly surpasses our expectations, we will close down the February pledges and open new ones for April (and thereafter in two month increments as needed).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
