Grimshade is a fantastic adventure during which you will explore a vast and rich world and fight formidable enemies. The gameplay is divided into two distinct phases - adventure and combat.
Adventure mode delivers an exciting journey through the world of Ree'Fah. As well as developing the storyline at your own pace, you will discover different races, acquire better equipment and meet new characters.
You can move freely within an area and select your own destinations: it's up to you to decide whether to go to the nearest city or to remain in your current location, you may choose to complete a quests of your choosing or to test your strength in a dungeon.
Each area that you visit is inhabited by unique residents, with their own rich history. Embrace the spirit of the local culture and spend your time interacting with the natives — you are sure to find something to help you in your quest, or you might even discover a whole new adventure.
When the stakes are high, the conflict is unavoidable. Prepare for battle by choosing the right tools for the job - find, trade for, or craft a wide range of equipment to improve your characters and make them versatile and adaptable.
We invested a lot of time and effort developing our unique approach to battles and making them as interesting and exciting as possible. Any unexpected turn of events can land you in a fight, and you share the world with a great many hostile creatures that you will be forced to defeat
At the start, you will have to pick a squad from your character's team including up to 4 members. Battles take place on a stage consisting of two opposite fields in which your characters and their enemies are located on their respective sides. Each side belongs to either the player or the opponent, and movement to the other side is restricted.
Characters move and act in a pre-defined order, which is established according to their initiative. Any action — be it moving, waiting, or using a skill — spends a certain amount of speed and moves a unit on the CTB scale by this amount.
We developed a unique scenario for each battle. Every new enemy has unique features, which ensures diversity of fights and encourages you to experiment and seek new approaches to combat. Naturally, each new battle requires more skill than the previous one.
We haven't forgotten about lovers of tactical battles. Some locations in Grimshade include special missions - hostile dungeons which have a greater level of complexity.
Each encounter with a boss turns into a mortal game of wits. Consider your strategy and prepare a squad that will be able to complete the dungeon in one go. When you do, you'll receive a well-deserved reward!
We've added a significant amount of equipment and abilities, allowing you to pick out the right setting for every specific situation.
Each character has nine equipment slots: five slots for weapons and accessories that provide combat skills, and four for protective gear.
Offensive slots have no vertical growth — these are your tools for completing combat tasks. For example, you can change Charlie's or Alister's weapons by taking faster pistols to fight small and fast enemies; or select a powerful pistol to pierce the armor of particularly strong monsters.
Protective gear, in turn, affects the heroes’ characteristics. Different types of equipment increase the character's chances of survival in battle, as well as providing overall skill boosts and increases to other traits. This is all aimed primarily at reducing the cost of any tactical mistake.
Pay attention to the search for and selection of equipment sets for your heroes. New equipment enhances your characters' abilities and expands the options available to them for taking on the ever-expanding range of combat scenarios.
Although Grimshade is a single-player game, you won't be traveling alone. As long as you advance through the story, you'll get acquainted with six lead characters. Their personalities, focus, and backgrounds are pre-set, but you can control their skills and develop relationships.
We hope to add another lead characters soon and the script of the game suggests there will be twelve of them in total.
After the Great Flood, the Kingdom of Easeon split into three states, torn apart by the heirs of Amon Darvish the Great and a long civil war. Ree'Fah witnessed the dark age for both livs and eleores. Nevertheless, after years of wandering, each group of people managed to find a safe haven from the dreadful monsters that riddle the lands of the Hardfore continent. Amazing technology, the legacy of the ancestors, secret knowledge of the nature of the world, grand ambitious goals for the future were lost forever during the battles for survival and the toils of settling a new society on the ruins of ancient cities, hostile wastelands, and dangerous mountain highlands.
Eighty years have passed. As old wounds have almost healed and people have set out on the road to prosperity, new enemies have gained the power to enter the scene, threatening the fragile stability of every living creature's existence.
Over the course of 18 months of development, the visual component of Grimshade has changed significantly. From a stylized watercolor environment with 2D characters, we have moved forward by adding 3D models of the characters to the 2D world, creating our own shader and a detailed environment.
Our artists drew the whole game by hand and carefully put it together, which is why the world of Ree'Fah is full of life even in its most secluded corners. We hope you will experience them all!
The history of Ree'Fah takes root in the distant past. We have created an eventful storyline, supported by a powerful soundtrack to fully immerse you in your journey through the universe of Grimshade.
The atmospheric music for the game was written by talented musician and composer Ivan Chimaer. He roamed the shadows of Ree'Fah, together with the darkest creatures that lurk there, to inspire him to create our game's soundtrack.
Ivan, one of our first active social media subscribers, answered our call when we began searching for a composer. He brought in a rough mix of a tune he had composed to his first interview at the studio, taking inspiration from screenshots, art, and game descriptions and as well as narrative texts from our community page.
The melody was refined and has become the main theme music for the game. Listen and enjoy!
Talerock is a young international studio, working on PC and console games. There are more than 30 people in our team, many of whom have many years of professional experience in the gaming industry.
Max Zogheib — lead game designer with nearly ten years of experience in the industry. He has worked as a leading designer of multiple well-known games, including Allods Team's Allods Online and Skyforge, consulted as system designer in such projects as Wargaming's World of Tanks and an unannounced collaborative tactical online shooter project of WG Labs and FuryLion.
Varvara Lyubovnaya — art director. She studied illustration at the British Higher School of Design and is the author of numerous comic books and the Pentawards laureate. She has another degree as a director.
Alexander Romashkov — narrative designer & producer with experience in the industry since 1991. He worked as a character designer for the project VirtuSphere in 2004, the author of the Prime World book series.
Evgeniy Mitin — technical director & lead developer with more than ten years of programming experience using different languages and development tools and four years in game development. Always has a pair of crutches or some newly invented wheels.
For us, Grimshade is a dream brought to life. We've been working on for more than a year. We have the resources to bring our core vision to completion without extra funds. A large team is involved in the production, both in the studio and remotely. During the course of development, we've made significant progress in achieving our primary goal.
Kickstarter gives us an excellent opportunity to help expand the reach of our game and put it into the hands of a wider audience, while also giving it an extra coat of polish.
Due to a limited budget, we have been forced to put a number of ideas on the backburner, but we dream of implementing them: more characters and monsters, new storylines, and an even bigger world. With your help, we can make the game even more vibrant and full.
Risks and challenges
We have been actively developing the game since 2016 and are extremely interested in its coming out. The game is already 80% ready, and the content is 30% ready.
Though unexpected events may occur, we have a clear and thought-out plan based on our previous game development experience and knowledge gained during the work on this project. We don't expect to reach all the goals of the campaign, but we will release a game that will be finished and will exactly match our vision. All the scheduled testing will be completed by summer and the game will be released on time, in October 2018.
From the very beginning of development, we were open to our community. Your feedback is very important to us and helps make the game better: positive feedback inspires us, while the negative gives us extra motivation to work and evolve. We already have a number of people waiting for Grimshade's release, and we hope you will join their ranks.
