DUM DUM's 3rd issue comes in a box featuring experimental literature, essays, photography, and objects, in a perversion of form.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for making our project a success! Now it's time for us to give back to the literary community. For every $10 donated in our FINAL HOURS, Team DUM DUM will pledge 1 hour of tutoring to the amazing student authors of 826LA.

Issue No. 3: PUNKS & SCHOLARS

DUM DUM Zine publishes experimental lit and art that embraces hybrid, transmedia forms. In the past, we've featured text message interviews, sonic literature, how-to stories, video poetry, and even serialized radio plays. Based out of Los Angeles, DUM DUM is also a collective of thinkers all over the country who collaborate on creating new, experimental work.

DUM DUM Issue No. 1: Cities & States

For PUNKS & SCHOLARS, our third issue, we’re designing all the submissions to fit into--get this--a box, which will contain a mash-up of literary objects, multimedia works and experimental writing.

What's in the 3rd issue?

So far we’ve got a fantastic essay on the failure of punk by L.A.’s own Part Time Punk/Part Time Professor, Michael Stock. Cover art by Robey Clark of local bookstore The Pop-Hop. A series of interviews about art displayed in bathrooms by Suzanne Oshinsky. A functional literary object (shh, it's a surprise!) by Adam J. Kurtz. A narrative mixtape by Rebekah Weikel of Penny-Ante Editions. A retrospective of 20 L.A. indie record stores by our WaxPhil columnist, Christina Gubala. A novel excerpt from DUM DUM editrix Liska Jacobs, the second piece in a forthcoming short story collection by founder Taleen Kalenderian and much, much more!

We’d like to think of it as a literary time capsule, a record of what’s happening with publishing in the space between what it was and when we started breaking the rules again. But we can't break those rules without you.

Why we need your help!

Not only is DUM DUM trying to up the ante with this issue with fancy packaging and personalized screen printing, we also want to continue providing FREE literary and arts workshopping in our fair Los Angeles via FREEWRITESHOP

Far too many costly writing workshops exist in the city, draining the pockets of already starving writers and artists. We don't roll that way. We want to create and learn together, without the exorbitant charges. Your donation would enable us to assemble our team far into the next year of FREEWRITESHOP workshops, where--guess what?--you'll be able to attend, share, and learn. For FREE.

Where the money goes:

Our funding goal of $5,000 will cover all the expenses of our 3rd issue (materials, assembly, printing, and packaging), FREEWRITESHOP Workshops, and DEAD SUMMER 3: a release party in L.A. where we'll break down the box and exhibit the issue for you to see and play with. There will, of course, be bands as well, including a set by DUM DUM's resident band, TULIPS.  All the remaining funds will be funneled directly into revamping our website.

So what are you waiting for? Get DUM!

Uber special love and thanks to Jacob Halajian who directed and shot our Kickstarter video, and Jesse Lomax who edited it!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

We've decided on our box for the issue: a 45" record mailer! An homage to punk music as well as fluxkits, we think it's the perfect container for the theme and contents of DUM DUM's 3rd issue. However, the original fluxkits came in high-quality briefcases with organized interiors. The budget to produce more than a few of those would be OUTSTANDING. Much more than our target goal, in fact.

As excited as we are about offering a variety of literary and artistic objects within the box, we don't want it to be a plain ol' assortment! Our team of designers is hard at work trying to find modestly priced solutions to construct partitions within the interior of the box, which will accommodate each piece in a meaningful way. Let the designing begin!
