August of 2005, a unique event took place in southern California. It was a concert featuring names not heard of, or from, in years. Yet it was anything but a nostalgic golden oldies show of bands and audience attempting to relive their youth. It was part celebration, part reunion, and part acknowledgement of what once was and still is. It was a call to come Home.
Now, you can have this unforgettable concert with you wherever you are. Listen to, and watch, the pioneers who created a genre and laid the foundation of today's Christian alternative music.
If you weren't there, now you can own the DVD of the concert that reunited some of Christian music's early pioneers.
If you were there, it’s time to revisit that amazing night, where so many gathered to celebrate and live again.
Broken Records, a tiny label out of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, saw the release of albums by trendsetting alternative bands who would forever change the face of Christian Music. Long before Switchfoot, Underoath, Third Day, and Skillet, these artists were stretching the limits placed on them by an industry seemingly unable to move forward. They broke through, broke out, and ripped apart the standards that are to this day, still being BROKEN.
What started out as a simple idea (get them together at a small venue and hope a few fans showed up) soon exploded into a full blown production. We found a few message boards and began trying to get the word out. Teenagers who had never heard of these bands were drafted to wear sandwich boards advertising the show and walk around crusades in Anaheim, churches in Irvine and worship festivals in Newport Beach. Most church bookstores we asked wouldn’t put up flyers let alone sell tickets. Even the church where we were holding the event didn’t want to put a flyer in their bookstore until... The word began to spread.
A few fans on the bands websites started telling their friends. Youth pastors, who had been teenagers in 1985, heard about the show and were asking their church bookstores to sell tickets and promote it. We began hearing from people outside of the country. Finland, Russia, The Philippines. These were fans so excited about the prospect of seeing this lineup one more time that they were purchasing airline tickets and flying in from halfway around the world for the one-night “once more only” event. When we realized how good this show was going to be we knew we had to take the opportunity to capture the concert on video, and so we did.
So Now What? Now we want to release the concert on DVD and we need your help! We have over 3 ½ hours of live concert footage which has already been edited. We have mixes from each band. We simply need the money to put it all together and get it to you. We also want you to get some cool stuff. Our rewards include exclusive phone calls from band members, one-of-a kind items, Kickstarter campaign T-shirt, concert photo albums, handwritten lyrics, and some of our very own memorabilia. Many band members have offered to donate keepsakes they've been holding onto for years. Not only can you get something new, but you can get (in the upper rewards) some of the stuff from our very own attics.
Because this is a project that includes five bands and 20+ band members, with nearly 4 hours of music, it's been a very expensive and labor intensive project. However, that's also the reason we have so many reward levels. Several are limited quantity. So please take time to scroll all the way down and look carefully at what is in each package. We've put a lot of concert photos on here, so we guarantee you won't be bored. We had fun creating these packages, we hope you find something you're excited about.

THE GIRLS WHO CRIED WOLF
In November of 2005 I received the last of the approvals by the bands to release the full concert on DVD. Since everyone was still on a concert high, I asked them all to let me interview them so I could add some depth to the project.
Due to the very personal nature of the interviews, I have been hesitant to allow very many people to see them. I just can’t hand them to someone to transcribe. I've known each of these bands since I was a teenager and they allowed me to ask them anything and answered quite honestly. One reason they did is that I assured them that they would have the final say in what was used, just in case they were too honest because they were talking to me.
In fact two of them said during the interview they forgot the they were being filmed.
As I was completing the concert portion and just getting started on the interviews my personal life fell apart. As the mother of three young boys I had been able to work on this project when they were in school and after they had gone to sleep. Just prior to Christmas of 2006 my husband was in a nearly fatal motorcycle accident and we found out the next day that he had stage IV lung cancer. He passed away just six weeks later. I was left as the sole parent of three young boys ages, 5, 7 and 9. Understandably, finishing this DVD was at that time, the last thing on my list of priorities.
I have occasionally revisited it, trying to get a bit of help here and there, but every time I just couldn’t find enough time. A child diagnosed with dyslexia, then another, then the third. Add to that Autism. Homeschool. Well let’s just say only now, as one child heads to college and the youngest starts high school have I found myself with enough willpower and energy to say for sure that I can finish this in a short amount of time.
I have also had to accept that, as important as it is for me to get some of these interviews out, I cannot wait for that to release the DVD of the concert. We have added a reward level to allow those who purchase it access to an online site where we will post interview segments as we get them done. If all of you fans are super excited and purchase enough rewards to get us to the third stretch goal of $90,000, I will be able to make the interviews my job for several months and actually get them completed and released on an additional DVD. But, no matter what, if we reach our initial goal the Broken Records Reunion Concert will finally be out and into the hands of fans - which will be a day to celebrate.
I never wanted to take any pre-orders or even do a Kickstarter unless I knew for sure I could deliver what I promised in a short amount of time.
So here we are. 11 years later. But where are we really?
What we have finished:
•The editing is done
•The audio is mixed
We are in the process of:
•Getting the cover art done
We need to:
•Pay for clearances to the publishers of fifty songs
•Have all the sets mastered
•Create titles and end credits
•Author the DVD (for which we could use a little help)
•Get this thing to the manufacturer and then to you
Thank you for your support and patience.
