Takamo Universe is based on the original Takamo, a play by mail game that was launched in 1982. Takamo ran for fifteen years and was redeveloped as a play by e-mail game in the late 1990s and then operated in e-mail format until 2005. To read more about Takamo’s history, visit www.takamouniverse.com/history
Takamo Universe brings the interstellar expansion, exploration and conquest of the Five Galaxies to a new generation of gamers in a way never imagined by the ancient empires of Takamo. Takamo Universe is a massive, three-dimensional universe filled with incredible sights, sounds and stories. It is a place of dark adventure and brilliant action.
Players lead a star-faring empire into the void to decide their own fate among the stars. You research ever-expanding technology trees that lead your people to develop abilities that allow them to be smugglers, pirates, merchants, warlords, explorers, diplomats, and perhaps even cybernetics.
We have always dreamed of creating a single, expanding universe that includes everything that made Takamo great. A huge cluster of stars with a complex and deep history giving players the room to explore and build, to conquer or play in whatever way they want. Takamo Universe is the dream fulfilled.
Once you have subscribed to the game, you will download the game software, which provides you with a graphic user interface as well as information and tutorials to get you started in the game.
Your point of view is the command and control center of a station somewhere in your territory. You are the leader of your civilization, which consists of your home world, several colony worlds in your star system, and a number of star ship squadrons. You have a number of military and civilian leaders under your command, who will handle the day-to-day operations of your planets and fleets.
You will begin initial builds on your home world, explore your home system, and explore surrounding star systems in search of habitable worlds where you can build new installations and increase your empire income. You will establish trade routes between habitable worlds as well as begin technological research and development to add new abilities, hardware and installations.
Your exploration will also provide clues to the history of the universe, which will give you information about ancient civilizations, lost worlds and artifacts that you may be able to search out and use. Contact with other players and computer-run empires will then permit you to forge alliances, engage in trade, share information, or go to war. Gaining information about the history of the Five Galaxies will trigger certain events in the game, which have a linear story sequence and may have consequences for everyone in the game, not just the player who finds them.
Player interaction is the heart of the game
The universe is a social place. It changes constantly, creating alliances and adversaries. There will be empires seeking to reestablish old Takamo alliances. Empires will seek to revive Naplian or Cybernetic domination. Others will search cooperatively to bring back ancient technologies or solve mysteries buried in the game. The key reality in Takamo was that players tended to move toward skills and technologies that fit their personalities much like real life, and we expect that will happen in this game as well.
Look and Feel
You will see a three-dimensional view of the universe showing regions, star systems, planets, moons, and deep space. The feel of the game is strategic; screens will show two or three-dimensional maps of space displaying the location of star fleets and planets. Pop-up or drop-down menus will show data about known worlds and fleets including information about leaders. You will be able to click or drill down to see 3D visuals of equipment, fleets, and star ships.
Continually expanding universe - Takamo Universe expands and populates as players move out into the stars. The three-dimensional universe never ends. The universe literally builds onto itself as players explore new regions.
Choose your destiny - You could be a civilization builder, a race that specializes in mining, trade or an industry. You could be an empire that seeks to be the arbiter of peaceful coexistence or a warrior empire bent on the conquest of all you encounter. Through your research and development, exploration and diplomacy, you will determine what abilities your empire has and the direction it will take.
Empire influence on the Universe - Because the universe builds itself as empires expand, player actions will profoundly influence the growth and history of the Five Galaxies. Their actions will beget lore and may literally be recorded in one or more of the many archives spread across the universe.
Intergalactic politics - Your empire may have the opportunity to join confederations of empires. Those bodies will have actual legislatures where diplomacy is conducted and collective action is taken through decision and influence within the group. Player interaction with ancient empires, alien trade zones and diplomatic enclaves will affect the political face of the universe.
Build vast diplomatic networks - Creating a network of embassies and consulates throughout the stars will help you keep your empire in the loop for breaking news and cooperative efforts.
Send your ambassadors to distant worlds - Diplomacy within the game will happen on several levels. You will be able to trade with player and AI empires. Your empire will send diplomatic missions to other empires to begin communication, influence, facilitate trade and build alliances.
Sift through ancient archives - Ancient archives are spread across the universe. These are vast libraries filled with all manner of information, including clues to lost civilizations, artifacts and technologies. Your scholars and exploration teams will constantly be searching for ancient ruins and derelict vessels for clues to new archival material.
Special Ops - Single player and multiplayer cooperative quests and commissions (special ops) will affect technological paths and trigger events that will affect everyone.
Spying and espionage - Spying on other empires and hunting other spies will be vital to the security of your empire. You will have a suite of tools to achieve your goals in this arena.
Dynamic economics and trade - You will be working with complex game economies surrounding Resource Units (money); Raw Materials; Finished Products and Trade amongst empires and alien economic zones. Your empire will need to establish and protect a network of trade routes between star systems and empires. A portion of your interstellar navy will be engaged in convoy escort. At the same time you may be involved in the interdiction of enemy trade and supply routes with your own raiders and privateers.
Interstellar trade - Once your trade networks link with another empire and your diplomats have signed trade agreements, you'll be able to move your trade vessels along the established trade routes of the other empire. The more empires you link by trade, the more your empire will prosper.
Piracy - If a trade route exists, it can be raided. Given the right technology, you will be able to send raiders and privateers against other empires' trade and supply routes.
Smuggling - Smuggling is similar to trade. You set up routes and send ships to make cargo runs. They are illegal and often raided by military and territorial forces, but they can be of great value.
Research and development: expanding variable technology paths - Technology paths in the game are virtually limitless. Many paths are interconnected which means that even if you are headed in one technological direction, you can always make a right or left turn and head in a new direction to vary your technology or discover new paths. We will also constantly add to the technology paths available, making the possibilities practically endless.
Tech tree advances - This is a tech tree that is completely interconnected and in the shape of a sphere. There are thousands of paths, each path connecting to a node (a technological advance). The node introduces you to a new technology and allows you to branch out into other paths, which gives you access to other nodes. The path represents the cost in time and resources to advance to the node at the end of the path and obtain that technological advance.
Uncover ancient technologies - Your own technology is based in the science of the ancient empires of the Five Galaxies. Buried in the ruins of those civilizations and derelicts drifting in space are artifacts and historical documents that can revolutionize your research and development.
Design your own star ship - Hull frames determine the size of a star ship but you can design what goes in them. The equipment you have available to you will be determined by your research and development.
Multiple hull classes - Your star fleet engineers have plans for numerous hull classes, scouts, destroyer escorts, destroyers, cruisers and battleships to name a few.
Discover new hull classes - Although you will start with standard hull classes, new classes derived from ancient archives and technological research will be discovered on a regular basis, giving you new opportunities for star ship design.
Alliances and declarations of war - You'll be able to ally with player and AI empires, declare war, and make other treaties involving, trade, commerce and other activities.
Command great fleets - You will not be flying one dinky ship. You will have squadrons of star ships at your command. Your military infrastructure will provide you with well trained, experienced captains and admirals to lead your fleets. You will issue the orders and then watch as they jump into hyperspace and travel vast distances to do your bidding.
Invade and conquer worlds - Some folks just won't see the wisdom of joining your empire peaceably. That's when you'll send in the marines. Those military units you've designed and trained will board troop transports and invade. The battles will rage for days on end and both sides will have time and opportunity to send relief squadrons and reinforcements.
Fleet to fleet battles - Typical encounters in the game will be between single squadrons of opposing warships, but may involve multiple squadrons. Actions, such as long-distance carrier strikes, and running gun battles between cruiser squadrons will be a regular occurrence in the game.
Star ship battles will occur regardless of whether or not you are online. If you happen to be offline, you will receive an alert message informing you of the action and you will be able to see a video replay of the action and get reports on your forces the next time that you are online.
Long range strikes by huge star fighter carriers - Carriers and distant strike tactics are integral to the game. Think WWII carrier campaigns in the Pacific.
Encounter ancient enemies - Ancient enemies and villains are out there, waiting for their chance to attack. Or perhaps to ally with you to forward their plans...
Employ special operations squads - You will recruit and train spec ops squads to engage in sensitive missions like cooperative quests, artifact hunting, counter terrorism and special strikes, to name but a few.
Discover ancient secrets - There are many mysteries and secrets amongst the stars. There are plots hidden within plots. Secrets that will thrill you and mysteries that you will wish you never solved. Some puzzles will take cooperative efforts to uncover. Special Operations teams will be important to your survival.
The bigger the empire, the greater the challenge - As player empires evolve, the opportunities, politics, cooperative quests and game-generated content becomes more challenging. Contact with ancient empires and villains increases. Moreover, the greater the empire becomes, the more the ancient universe reveals itself to the player. Big empires will have more than enough to keep players engaged and interested. You won't get big and get bored.
New player safeguards - New player empire safeguards and protected early encounters are an integral part of game design. Whether you join the day the game is launched or five years later, your empire will be free to develop and thrive.
Really SEE what happens - Because of the ability of the game to scale seamlessly you could be looking at battle icons from the comfort of your command and control center or watching a line of enemy dreadnoughts launching missiles in deep space.
Leaders know what to do - Leaders, whether civilians, politicians, admirals or generals, know how to go about their jobs. They will follow the orders you give them without your constant supervision. In a persistent universe, they are on the job 24/7 whether you are online or not.
On duty - Once live, we will have a team of people adding content on a regular basis. We will always be adding equipment, abilities, stories, special ops, and responding to the needs of players.
Modding - Planned modding tools will allow players to design new ship frames, skins and other items for inclusion in the game.
Advanced game technology - Using the Unity 3D platform, Takamo Universe’s game engine will take advantage of the latest gaming advances.
An online sci fi game based on a play by mail game from thirty years ago wouldn't get a second glance by a mainstream publisher. This is your chance to show them how wrong they can be. The team that created a game that lasted for not one year, not five years, but TWENTY YEARS has a lot of experience building and running a successful massively multiplayer game. Now is the moment when you join with that team to bring something amazing to the sci fi game community.
Recruit a friend to back the game, and you and your friend will receive a free colony moon or a battle cruiser! The new backer just needs to tell us the name of the recruiter in a comment on our Kickstarter page.
What you've seen was put together by a very small team this past year. We believe that you need to see this vision, not just hear about it. So we invested our own money to build some of the pre-alpha visual prototypes, as well as a few simple ship models and concept art that shows the look and feel of the game.
Now it is up to you - We need your support. The more funds we raise, the greater the resources we’ll have to build a great game. By meeting or exceeding our goal on Kickstarter, you will give us the means to make this amazing.
Main Goal - $75,000
Stretch Goal 1 - $150,000
Smuggling routes, alien trade zones, leader voice acting
Stretch Goal 2 - $250,000
Interstellar newsfeed, improved ground military unit design, trade zone stock exchanges, improved carrier warfare, player empire confederations
Stretch Goal 3 - $350,000
Leader icons and leader AI programming, tablet app, new planet classes, deep space stations
Stretch Goal 4 - $500,000
Improved AI empires, Steambox development project, voice actors, expanded star ship hull frames
As an early backer, you’ll get more than just access to the beta.
The people who pledge for their empire in Takamo Universe will be part of an elite group that has exclusive access to early game play and behind the scenes development updates.
The people who pledge here will get to start their empires long before the gaming public. A year from now we will invite qualified backers to join the Takamo Universe Beta, moving out into the star cluster well ahead of commercial launch. You will help us test the game with real users. Once Beta is done, the commercial game will launch. All positions held by players in the Beta will continue into the commercial launch. The very core of the universe will be made up of those player positions.
In addition, part of the money you provide is budgeted to maintain the Takamo Universe web site with regular updates. Our goal is for the game’s website to constantly give information about what’s happening in the universe. This flow of information will continue even while the game is in production. We will discuss development progress and seek the valued insights and opinions of our backers. Gaming community involvement is the key to our success.
We hope that the benefits of joining the game at the outset will be enough for you to back us and reserve your empire today.
Please support us, tell your friends and join the online discussion. The Takamo Universe is waiting for you!

Risks and challenges
We are aiming for an outstanding sci fi game. We are in the pre-production phase, which is why you are seeing concept art, trailers, and demos of game assets. We’ve chosen a modest funding goal that will support the required development, and we’ve committed to a reasonable time frame that takes into account possible delays.
No one can predict the future, but every challenge can be overcome. One of the biggest challenges in development of a video game is delivering the product on time. However, this team includes three of the four developers of the original game as well as one of the main programmers. These team members have demonstrated the ability to develop, market, and run epic multiplayer games. So, we are confident we will be able to deliver an excellent game experience.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
