Update #3

Reactive Grip - Wireless & Tracking Survey

12 comments
3 likes

We understand that many people are interested in us making the Reactive Grip controllers wireless. As such, we are currently assessing whether we can do this from a technical standpoint and want further input from backers and others interested in our project. Please share this update far and wide so we can get as many responses as quickly as possible.

At this time, we’d like to better assess the demand for a fully wireless controller (and a proposed hybrid design with wireless communication and wired power or a user-supplied battery pack). We also want to follow up on the demand for integrated tracking for our controller Dev Kits.

While we know that making our controller wireless would require us to balance some very challenging design specifications, such as controller weight, battery life, fidelity of haptic feedback, cost, and latency; we first want to understand what level of demand there is for wireless for the development kit.

Please take a moment to respond to our short questionnaire.

      I am hesitant to push for wireless right now as I have seen a number of hardware kickstarters fail to successfully ship product after adding major overhaul stretch goals like this mid fund. Would wireless be nice? Yes, but how much risk to the project does it add?

      Thank you for the response, I have filled in the survey now. As regards the STEM bundle, I don't mind waiting for that.

      Another reason I held off on the 5 tracker STEM pack during it's kickstarter run was that I half expected oculus to announce camera based hand/finger tracking for the consumer oculus (making STEM & RG redundant I thought) but I have since re-considered this & post my thoughts here in case anyone else has similar concerns.

      1. They probably will have camera based tracking, but (given recent comments from Oculus themselves), not likely for the first consumer iteration

      2. In the case that they do I actually think both systems would complement each other rather than compete with one another for heightened immersion. Imagine physically holstering your Reactive Grip'ped STEM controllers (given absolute tracking they could be seen holstered in exactly the same place on your avatar as the guns/weapons/tools they are emulating), freeing up you're camera tracked digits to manipulate control panels or other in simulation elements more suited to natural/complex manipulation.

      3. It will likely be necessary for future games/simulations to adopt a skeletal+handle based input system to both scale to the various input/tracking systems available & accommodate future systems.

      I will wait diligently for a STEM+RG wireless kit to go with my (modded-to-be-wireless) Rift & Omni. Now I just wish I'd obtained a Comp Sci degree at university age rather than just started one as a mature student so I could get to work on that Skeletal+Handle middleware, as there's likely a mint to be made there.

      @Jimmyl and @Egamruf

      Sorry if the way we structured our survey doesn't make sense.
      Our advisors told us to pose wireless in a way that helps us understand how much "value" our backers (and customers) place on wireless.
      What we are trying to asses is how much extra would you pay to have the fully wireless or hybrid wireless solutions. You can answer this with respect to the current pricing on the Dev Kits on kickstarter, or with respect to if there were a wired and wireless version of the consumer device. If you wouldn't buy our controller unless it was fully wireless, just put $0 in those response boxes.

      Feel free to skip the questions that you don't want to or know how to answer. Even partial responses from people are useful to us.
      We only made the first question a required question (so that we know how to interpret the responses that follow.

      Re: cost of the Dev Kit...
      The consumer version can be easily sold for under $100 if we can get Oculus rift economies of scale (which I believe is 50,000+ ???).

      We have talked with the folks at Sixense and I believe they have the same wish as you have expressed @Jimmyl, that our haptic feedback would be integrated into the consumer version of their STEM controllers. If this is the case, you'll need to wait till at least 2015 to get this into your hands though.

      @Pie Innovation

      If we can get up to even the Oculus Rift economies of scale (i.e., >50K devices sold), we will be easily able to drop our price below $100.

      Also, wireless communication for the Dev Kit is something we are very seriously considering adding adding as a stretch goal, pending the results of our survey.

      @Sean Concannon

      It will be easy to take your STEM module out of a STEM controller and put it into a Reactive Grip controller and will have the same tracking performance as your STEM controller (and will work with the STEM base you already have).

      I'm afraid I have to agree with Egamruf, not sure how to answer some of these questions without giving the wrong impression. Particularly the $ values, are they meant to be cumulative or asking what we'd pay above the current price?

      I agree also with Pie about the economies of scale, I think the current price as it stands being for a fully untethered system is really essential to keeping me on board. I do understand that the engineering complexity of the device is what makes it such a relatively expensive peripheral & I really want to support this innovation but it doesn't change the fact that I can't justify the current cost if it remains a tethered system.

      I had hoped that the reactive grip would launch with a 'full STEM package w/RG controllers' option.

      I think that the Reactive Grip is already becoming prohibitively expensive for the consumer market... So it depends how much wireless costs to add.
      On the other hand, it would provide a better gaming experience.
      If the cost of Reactive Grip is likely to come down with economies of scale... Then I would say wireless is a good idea. If not, then I wouldn't.

      Here's what I think, I know my friends share the same views:

      "The reactive grip and even the dev kits should be mandatory wireless and no stretch goals should be considered for this. Strict wireless will make a big difference on the viability of this product. As much as full wireless support would be best, a wired battery pack for the dev kit is still a better approach to cost control, weight savings, additional battery life and ability to use our own batteries. Although at the very least an untethered system is a must. I already backed the STEM system, so being able to put a STEM tracker in the Reactive Grip to minimize it's cost could be an option but it doesn't seem very practical going this route. If the exact capable tracking technology can be offered then an "out of box" solution would be best."

      Share your opinion, do you agree?

      Creator Tactical Haptics on November 14

      @Jake Breker
      Yes that is one of the options that can be done, but we're not sure that everyone will want the weight of a battery on the controller. However, people could attach a battery pack directly to the bottom of the controller just the same way we show attaching trackers to the front of the controller (there will be attachment points at both of these locations).

    10. Fb_profile_picture.small

      Creator Egamruf on November 14

      I was going to do that survey, but its it's worryingly bad.

      I would prefer wireless. I will still back if it is not wireless. The absence of such an option is unhelpful. "How many $ would I attribute to wireless value"... How much does it cost? I can't offer anything approaching meaningful feedback with that survey.

      I don't mean to be difficult, but if you want helpful feedback, you might like to reconsider the questions to not contain inherent biases. Even the language used imports bias.

    11. Missing_small

      Creator Zac S on November 14

      I would like the fully wireless, but if there was away to do both that would be better.

    12. Fb_profile_picture.small

      Creator Jake Breker on November 14

      Why not attach the battery pack to the controller in the hybrid design? Then the hybrid design would essentially be a fully wireless controller where you provide your own battery and also lacking integrated charging.
