About

Space Editor is a battle card game whose theme is the creation of the universe. As a player, you will become an incarnation of a god that governs an element constituting the universe. Create the universe and own it with strong control!

In Vedic mythology, the entire universe including five elements and the earth we live in were completed when "Brahma" emerged. In Space Editor, you will recreate the moment the universe was created through the friction of the five elements.

Each player chooses one of the four elements: fire, wind, earth, and water, and start a game with a deck of cards corresponding to the chosen element. Each card has characteristics unique to the element it represents. The more games you play, the better you will be at building strategies.

There are four types of cards in Space Editor: star cards, planet cards, ability cards, and a basepoint card. Star cards have victory points; you can't win the game without them. Planet cards are powerful weapons; they can attack opponents' star cards or protect yours. Ability cards are the key to your strategy. Players take turns placing those cards. The player with the highest score (the sum of the victory points of face-up star cards when the game ends) is a winner. The basepoint card is the center of the universe. It should be first placed and the game will start by connecting other cards to the basepoint card.

You can customize decks or build one by yourself. Before you start, you have to learn about the abilities unique to each element. In Space Editor, every card belongs to a specific card set, which is written at the bottom of each card. All cards included in one card set are contained in one package. As you get a package for each card set, you can collect all cards.

In Space Editor, you can enjoy two different modes of gameplays, depending on play times and the number of players.

Half game mode (for 2-4 players): Suitable for a casual gameplay among a group of people. Compared to full game mode, luck in card drawing has a significant effect in half game mode, thus you can enjoy a casual gameplay even when there are only two payers.

Full game mode (for 2 players): In full game mode, you can enjoy a strategic gameplay. You can unleash your deck’s potential to its fullest, yet there can be unexpected developments. Suitable for a serious gameplay between two players after getting used to the rules.

For 2-4 players. Each player chooses an element and picks a deck of cards of the element, which is used as a draw deck. Draw two cards which become your hand. Then, decide turn order and the last player in the turn order places a basepoint card on the table. Players take turns until the game ends, which is when no player can draw a card from his/her draw deck (no card is left in the draw deck). The player with the highest score (the sum of the victory points of face-up star cards when the game ends) is a winner.

A player's turn:

  • Place step: Pick a card from your hand and place it to be adjacent to any already placed card.
  • Ability resolve step: Resolve any abilities of ability cards which come into effect in place step.
  • Discard step: Discard the remaining card in your hand, which is not to be used in the game.
  • Draw step: Draw two cards from the draw deck and add them to your hand. The player's turn ends.

For 2 players. Each player chooses an element and picks a deck of cards of the element, which is used as a draw deck. Draw four cards which become your hand. Then, decide who goes first and the second player placed a basepoint card on the table. Players take turns until the game ends, which is when both players empty the draw deck and place the last card in their hand. The player with the higher score (the sum of the victory points of face-up star cards when the game ends) is a winner.

A player's turn:

  • Draw step: Draw a card from the draw deck and add it to your hand.
  • Place Step: Pick a card from your hand and place it to be adjacent to any already placed card.
  • Ability resolve step: Resolve any abilities of ability cards which come into effect in place step. The player's turn ends.

Star cards have victory points and lead you to victory. However, they are weak in terms of the power of sides, making them rather easy targets. Some star cards have a special property called binary star. Each element has star cards.

Though plant cards have no victory points, many of them are strong in terms of the power of sides. Planet cards can be arms to attack opponents' cards, or they can be shields to protect your star cards. You can gain advantage in the game by utilizing your planet cards. Each element has planet cards.

Each ability card has its own unique ability, which will come into effect when the described conditions are satisfied. You can advance the game tactically by keeping them on your side. Each element has its unique ability cards. Each element has ability cards with element-specific abilities

A basepoint card does not belong to any element and serves as a centerpoint when starting a game. The symbols at the sides of the basepoint card work the same way as those of other cards. The ability described in the basepoint card is effective throughout the game and should be considered at all times.

A side of a card has an impact value, which indicates its power against an adjacent card. A symbol, either alone or in combination with a number, produces effects such as turning over an adjacent card. With this power mechanism, you can turn over your opponents' cards and protect your cards so as not to be turned over. There are combinations of symbols which can be or cannot be connected. The effects of the symbols and the connectable combinations are also applicable to a side with no symbol and sides of a face-down card. *Adjacent refers to a state in which two cards are placed so that a side of one card is in contact with that of the other card.

Impact value

A value in a nuclear reaction energy symbol or a gravitational energy symbol represents the strength of the symbol. Compare the strengths of the symbols of the connected sides to determine if phase change occurs

Not sure if you want to back Space Editor yet? Don't worry! You can download a print-and-play version and try it out before you make a decision!

This print-and-play version includes the following items:

  • 1 basepoint card
  • 1 water deck (including 24 cards)
  • 1 earth deck (including 24 cards)

We have high-ink version and low-ink version, both in letter size and A4 size. High-ink cards have the same graphics which are used in the product cards. High-ink cards have two sides, so you can either use double-sided printing or print each side in two different papers and tape/glue them together to make thicker cards. Low-ink cards are single-sided (back sides will be blank) and do not contain any graphics, thus you can save your valuable ink.

The starter pack contains 181 cards including deck custom cards. An original art is used for each card. You can see some of them here.

"I really like Space Editor. In a small box we get basically two games – a lightweight, fairly random filler, or a nice, strategic mind-bending duel. Due to the small size it can always be carried with you."

Review video from theMCGuiRE review

"I definitely recommend looking for this one as over the course of game play you build a beautiful space layout on the table with stars and planets and tactically make decisions on the fly that effect the rest of the game and the cards you have available to you as a player. Fun, simple, good game."

Preview video from Tantrum House

"The art works well for this game and I like the square cards. It feels new and fresh for a card game. This is an abstract strategy card game but the asymmetrical powers make it really fun."

Review video from UndeadVikingVideos

"The artwork and everything is really fantastic. There's two different ways to play and I enjoyed them both a great deal. (For half game mode) I really liked the mystery of the two cards and having to discard one. (For full game mode) Lifelong gamers type of people will really enjoy the strategy elements and the tactical elements."

We are planning to develop three expansions of Space Editor. The first one, "5th.element", features the vicious fifth element which does not appear in the starter pack. The second expansion uncovers sight of gods, which are shrouded in mystery in the starter pack. Players will feel closer to the gods. In the third expansion, life born in the universe will evolve and come to control stars with their prominent technology. This will be the beginning of a new creation of the universe.

5th.ELEMENT - The vicious fifth element emerges!

Space Editor is a customizable card game. In conventional customizable card games, new cards are usually released in a card set. Though Space Editor follows the same step at the moment, we have a more flexible expansion plan for future releases. The world of Space Editor will complete with the starter pack and three expansions. After that, there will be a dynamic development and the universe controlled by gods, elements, and life will expand infinitely.

Good news! Space Editor will ship to (almost) all countries and regions! All reward items will be shipped from Tokyo, using Japan Post airmail services. We are a team of a husband and a wife (we got married in last June). We are nothing like board game experts but we like playing games in our spare time just like many of you do. So how was Space Editor born? It all started earlier this year, when, according to Yota, Yuyu told him like "hey maybe you should make your own game!" It may sound a little crazy but then he actually did. And that is how Space Editor was created.

Don't get us wrong though. Some of you might think 9 months is a very short time to develop a game. But we think and believe that the time spent to create a game doesn't determine the quality of the game. We take this project very seriously and we believe this is a fun game so we would like you to have fun with it too!

He's one of the renowned motion graphic designers in Japan. He often works in a video game industry and has so far created a lot of movies and GUIs for video games. He loves games and movies, especially those with SF themes. Among other things, he focuses on creating games which are beautiful and pleasant to the eye. You can take a look at some of his works here >> Yota Suzuki's Works

I used to work as something like a patent agent and now I'm a freelance translator. In this project I contribute as a rulebook editor/translator and a CCO (I'm the only one calling myself so but yeah), and also take care of other miscellaneous stuffs. If you have any questions regarding Space Editor, Tactical Games, the Kickstarter campaign, anything, or if you just want to tell us how awesome we are, please feel free to drop us a line at info@tactical-games.net. We will try our best to reply to you as soon as humanly possible.

Get social with us at the following social media!

We decided to start a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the production cost. Making actual games costs a lot and we don't have enough in our pocket to print our game. We were thinking then the first thing which came to our mind was Kickstarter.

Our primary goal is to collect enough funds so that we can print the game. If we will be lucky enough to get any extra, we'll use them for the production of the expansions and another game Yota is developing (it's a war style board game).

Another goal of this campaign is to let people all over the world to know about Space Editor. We will be simply happy if more people know about Space Editor and we will be super happy if more people play our game and enjoy it. We believe that communication and conversation which take place in the community will improve the quality of the game. Our goal is to become closer to players and grow and expand Space Editor together with its community.

We would like to take this opportunity to show our appreciation to the following people. Without their kind help, we couldn't have come this far. So thank you so much! Arigatou Gozaimasu!

  • Andi san and his team for kindly helping us with the launch
  • Fukumoto san and colleagues for willingly helping us with production etc.
  • Japanese Kickstarter pioneers (especially Takagi san and Kozi san) for generously sharing their wisdom with us
  • Those great reviewers for giving us such awesome reviews
  • Instagrammers and bloggers for being so nice and kind to help us spread the word
  • Yota's friends for helping us with playtesting and making suggestions to make Space Editor better

Risks and challenges

This is our first project and we don't have a huge community of people who know and support us yet. We understand we are in a very competitive situation as there are lots of great games on Kickstarter and it's not easy to stand out from crowds. However we believe in our game and our beautiful and super cool arts and visuals (which are one of our strengths) will surely catch people's eyes.

We are done with the development of the game and Space Editor is ready for production as soon as we have enough money to print. In the meantime, we keep playtesting to make sure there is no flaw and see if there are any improvements we can make until the last minute before the production starts.

We estimate the shipment time will be around February next year. We will do our best to deliver Space Editor to backers as soon as possible. We will inform you in case the shipment time has to change due to a delay in factory shipment or improvement of print quality. Misalighnment of print position can be seen in the beta cards. We are working with the printing company to fix the problem.
