My Story:

The Original WTF project was one of the largest "EDC" related projects on Kickstarter (at it's time, the largest), I had a $2,500 goal and ended up around $85,000 and was only my 2nd project.  It was also the first time I'd worked with Titanium.  We faced a few complications, but still pulled though and delivered early.  It was a massive undertaking to produce 2000 WTFs when I had never done anything like that in my life. We made an extra 1000 WTFs because of the demand - glad we did, but sold out quickly.

So instead of bringing the WTF 1.0 back from the dead (It's being ripped off by the Chinese anyhow), I decided to take YOUR thoughts on the WTF design and create a - Stronger, Faster,... well you get the idea :)  The WTF 2.0, I believe has more "Utility" per square inch than any other "one piece multi-tool" on the market.  I hope you think so too.  Many multi-tools are bulky and not comfortable, Sure they may look cool, but most of the time are not actually useful.

But...what about the KeyStiK?

The KeyStiK was created to solve another issue, because I have another Key Holder called the TiKeY.  However there are many people who don't like the key holder style of carrying keys, "or they just have too large a set of keys" or "too many keys" or "their keys are too large" - so.. you know me, I found a solution.  Just like the WTF 2.0; I believe the KeyStiK is unique in it's design, from the pocket clip, to the way your keys lay and tuck away in the corner of your pocket - Unnoticeable is what most say.  No more keys poking you in the leg.  See for yourself :)

So... why do 2 items in one project?

Well, a lot went into the decision.  They pair so well together, and they can totally re-invent your EDC.  That is what I like - an all-in-one solution.

My Goal:

My Goal of $999 is so I can efficiently make the WTF 2.0 and lower the production cost by around 50%. Currently I'm making the prototypes on my CNC Mill and my cost each is over the pledge amount.  Endmills are expensive, electricity, coolant, the list goes on. The goal is to purchase Titanium in large sheets around 12" x 36" which allows "nesting" of the parts, so there is less waste.  Currently on my Mill I'm wasting around 60% more Titanium than I need to, luckily it's left over Titanium from the 1st WTF project :)  I think the cost of JUST the Titanium for each of my prototypes is around $30 itself - so you can see how we can bring the cost down.

---

Stretchgoals:

Stretchgoals will/can include whatever we come up with during the project.  I interact with backers to decided what is best - we do a lot of voting - whether it's new finishes/colors or free key rings. You just never know, so stop in early and lets talk in the comments.

Prototype VS Production:

Feel free to ask questions in the comments :)

Prototype:

  • Made on my CNC Mill - Takes 45min to mill just one. (Not efficient)
  • Smallest tool used on the Mill was .0625" (Too big for the Design)
  • Was not tumbled before adding the File/Prybar
  • Was not tumbled to radius all edges

Production:

  • 2D Waterjet cut - Surface finish on the side will be different
  • Smallest Waterjet can cut is .030" (Perfect for the Design)
  • Will be tumbled after Waterjet to Radius edges
  • Will then 3D machine the File/Prybar
  • Additional finishing to make it PERFECT

So as you can see the Prototype is just that.  I try very hard to make my Prototypes look like the Production units. However, the end result is always better :)

As for the KeyStiK - well it's basically production quality already :)

 * Emergency "glass breaker" is NOT to be assumed as Automobile glass, as that is Tempered glass - You would need a proper Carbide Point to break Tempered Glass.

Risks and challenges

Like anything, there could be bumps in the road. Since this is my 8th project, I have 7 successful and "over-funded" Kickstarter projects, I do not foresee any issues.

I will be doing 100% of the work in my own shop. Nothing in this project is new to me. Almost all of my projects have been made with Titanium, Brass, Copper, Aluminum, and/or anodized; plus, it's all been shipped to over 5,500 backers! You could say "I'm the man for the job". You can count on me to get your reward out by the due date; I believe in the "under promise, over deliver" philosophy. Check out my last Kickstarter projects, to get a clear picture of my history. You will not be disappointed.

You will get Pictures and Video of all steps in "Updates".

KeyStiK Steps:

Online: Order the Brass, Aluminum, and Copper in Raw Stock form

CNC Lathe: Turn raw stock into KeyStiK Blanks

CnC Mill: Build a fixture to hold the KeyStiK blanks, then mill the KeyStiK

The rest of this is done by hand and a little "elbow grease".
- Inspect and Debur the parts in a tumbler
- Clean the Parts
- Clean the parts again!
- Inspect the parts again!
- Package the completed KeyStiK

WTF 2.0 Steps:

Online: Order the Grade 5 Titanium Raw Stock form (Sheets)

Waterjet: The previous WTF was waterjet cut, I will be testing other methods, but pretty sure it will end up being cut the same way since we know it works great :)

The rest of this is done by hand and a little "elbow grease".
- Inspect and Hand Sand the Waterjet "Tab" off
- Debur, and round the edged in my tumbler
- Clean the Parts
- Ok, there is more CNC :) CNC Mill: Mill the prybar
- Clean the parts again!
- Inspect the parts again!
- Possibly a 2nd tumbling process (followed by cleaning)
- If Polished - Polish, if Anodized - Anodize.
- Yep, Clean again :) Gotta be clean and organized :)
- Package the completed WTF 2.0

Shipping:

- Print Labels and Ship the Rewards to their new homes... YOU!

There is a lot done by hand; just because there is some CNC work, doesn't mean it's not a lot of hands on work.
