Designed by an award-winning, Hong Kong product engineer, Tactbit Cubes feature a unique patented design that allows for a fully rotatable magnetic and electronic connection between each cube. The cubes can twist a full 360° and the inbuilt LED lights maintain their circuitry and shine bright. The smooth magnetic planes make building easy; with no interlocking parts, they simply snap and build. Tactbit Cubes are an inclusive manipulative, making the joy of discovery easily accessible for kids of all abilities.
Tactbit Cubes make building easy. They're perfect for preschool explorers and for kids who like building quick and big. Loaded with snappy magnets, they're irresistible. Constructed with smooth, chrome plates along their edges, the cubes feel reassuringly tactile in fidgety hands.
Tactbit Cubes include Color Cubes and Clear Cubes. The Color Cubes shine in one of six colors. The Clear Cubes contain two LED lights. Left on their own, the cubes are translucent. Snap on the Power Cube and your creation lights up. Twist the Clear Cube and your masterpiece changes color.
Make it high, make it low, make it wheel, make it twist and light up, make it talk, and sing. The imagination is boundless. The light-up action and unique STEAM blocks add discovery and critical thinking to fun play!
Tactbit Cubes provide layers of multi-age discovery. We've designed a collection hands-on lessons that explore circuits, conductivity, magnetism, resistance and more through Tactbit play. Geared for the youngest of scientist through early elementary, Tactbit Cubes are an educational addition to the home or classroom.
How Do Tactbit Cubes Work?
Each Tactbit Cube is loaded with magnets, circuits and LED lights. There are Power Cubes, Clear Cubes, Color Cubes, Wheel Cubes and Recorder, Sound and Music Cubes. Meet the cubes that star in Tactbit:
The Power Cube. This is the force behind the game-play. Switch on the Power Cube and all adjoining cubes get their light and power. Connect the Power Cube to a Sound Cube and it will trigger the sound track. Attach it to the Recorder Cube and it'll enable the recording system. The Power Cube comes in all 6 colors, red, orange yellow, green, blue and purple.
The Color Changing Clear Cube. The semi-opaque cube shines clear. Twist the Clear Light Cube 180° and the LED switches from a clear light to a color-changing cycle.
The Color Cubes. These single cubes are decked out in 6 colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. When connected to the Power Cube circuit, they shine their color.
The Music, Sound & Recorder Cubes. Bring your creation to life with music and sound! The Music Cube plays a cycle of classic tunes - perfect for young children. The Sound Cube is loaded with neat sound effects for action-packed play. The Recorder Cube allows you to record your secret messages, meows and giggles. Attach the Sound Cubes to the Power Cube and the STEAM operation activates.
The Wheel Cube. What's a manipulative without wheels? Add the wheels and make your car, train, airplane or space alien roll and move.
We Need Your Support!
Tactbit Cubes have already been manufactured in a small run. We need your support to bring down the costs and make it affordable for mass production. We've brought Tactbit Cubes into preschools and elementary schools and watched children dive into Tactbit action. We know that Tactbit is a different type of toy. It's for inventors and dreamers. It's for children who love to create and explore. It's a toy that lives up to a child's spirit of inventiveness and lets them shine. Your support will make Tactbit Cubes accessible to children nationwide. Please consider pledging to our campaign!
** PLEASE NOTE: The Tactbit Kickstarter originates in Hong Kong, so the rewards in the Pledge Section are listed in Hong Kong dollars. We have added the United States dollar equivalency to each reward tier so you can know the exchange. For your convenience shipping costs are included in the reward prices. **
We've set our funding goal to cover the mass production of the cubes that have already passed through small-run production. But we are brimming with more Tactbit ideas! Here's a selection:
If we reach 75% of our funding goal...
...We'll develop a proximity sensor cube that triggers a recorded playback when it detects motion. This reward tier will be available for shipping in December.
If we reach 100% of our funding goal...
...We'll develop a wheel cube equipped with a motor. Connect it to a Power Cube and the wheels spin. This reward tier will be available for shipping in December.
If we reach 125% of our funding goal...
...Stay tuned! And watch this space... We're researching ways to integrate Arduino into Tactbit and make these cubes an exciting STEAM tool for older kids too!
Tactbit Gives Back
We deeply believe that positive interactions with STEAM disciplines can reinforce a child for life. That's why we've partnered with Bridges 365, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit committed to bridging the resource gap in low-income communities. With every 6-Cube “Give One, Get One” set pledged on Kickstarter, Tactbit will donate an equal set to Bridges 365.
Tactbit Cubes are the result of several cycles of product development. We returned to the drawing board until the perfect cube was tooled: one that was sized right for small hands, felt smooth and dependable, had responsive electronics and sturdy magnets. Check out the previous iterations on the timeline. We will be ready for mass production as soon as we reach 100% funding. Delivery is scheduled for November 2019.
About the Creator
I'm Patrick Poon: Dad, Granddad and Tactbit inventor. My home is in Hong Kong but I've lived extensively in Canada and now my grandchildren live there. I've spent my career engineering all sorts of gadgetry, household and commercial products including a patented overflow system for sinks which sold globally, a popular model of motorized AMEX credit card machines; a unique electric water pot design for which I won Toronto’s Best Product, and I was the runner up in the Hong Kong Electronics Show with my creative desk lamp design. I have worked closely in the production industry and know the ins-and-outs of the system. I hold over 50 designs and patents; but Tactbit Cubes are my first solo project and my first Kickstarter.
I've had a long career in production but my heart is in toys! More recently, I engineered and patented the magnetic lighting system incorporated in the Tetris Light, a light sculpture that uses iconic Tetris shapes. But Tactbit Cubes are different. They are entirely my creation and I want them to reach you the way I imagine them to be as an inventor - without the corporate middleman.
I know how a child's toy should be - it should be about discovery and invention. I have 2 granddaughters, and as I watch them grow up, I want them to excel in STEAM fields as I know they can. That's why I invented Tactbit. These cubes are super fun to play with and entirely STEAM-centric. They're multi-age, bringing excitement and confidence to STEAM from the youngest ages right through early elementary. My dream is to see Tactbit Cubes in homes and schools around the world! With your help, I know we can do it. Please consider pledging and sharing my campaign.
In the run-up to our launch, we mailed a handful of samples to educators, parents and therapists. Here are some of their reactions:
Sawyer is a lively 4 year old. Check out his priceless reaction to his 12 Cube Tactbit sampler!
Alana, a sweet 18 month old, discovers Tactbit!
Tabitha is a homeschool mom. Her daughter has a sensory processing disorder. Check out this adorable girl's reaction to her Tactbit sampler!
Renee is a education administrator. She tested out a 4-Cube Tactile Fidget Set with her son Max.
Trisha, an avid proponent of science education and author of the Innovation Laboratory blog shared: We were sent a sample set of magnetic light up cubes. My 3 kids have been playing with the 4 cubes non-stop since we got them. They are asking for a full set. Their website has lots of great lessons using the cubes that encourage kids to learn about circuits, magnetism, and more. Check out her Tactbit video here.
Risks and challenges
Tactbit Cubes are already 100% tooled. We have produced Tactbit Cubes in small runs and are happy with the result. We have sent samples to reviewers and included their reactions on our social media pages. We have established relationships with the factory and have the shipping logistics in place. There are always unforeseen holdups when dealing with factories and shipments, but we hope that our readiness will keep these to a minimum. The biggest risk to a timely delivery is our manpower. We are a small, but organized team and while we have a solid plan in place, it's still possible that we have under-estimated the time it takes to do the little tasks, like packaging rewards and getting to the post office. If we do vastly exceed our pledge expectations, then there will likely be a delay in production - but we are still confident in our ability to deliver the pledges. We are committed to keeping our backers fully informed on each stage of the production and shipping process so you can rest assured that you will receive your pledge.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
