The Tacoma Card Deck is a tribute to the beauty, intrigue, and talent of Tacoma, Washington.
The city of Tacoma, Washington is a wonderful place with a deep history and fascinating identity, replete with talented artists who love Tacoma as much as we do. We want to create a set of playing cards that showcase Tacoma’s most cherished places and remember Tacoma’s beloved legends as interpreted by local artists. This project aims to share Tacoma’s story and Tacoma’s pride. We invite you to help make this happen.
More about this project
14 Artists + 52 Tacoma Places = 1 Amazing Set of Playing Cards!
The entire Tacoma Card Deck is unique. Chandler O’Leary, designed the framework for the cards hand illustrating and lettering the box, back of cards, and the number and suit faces into which original artwork will be featured. In addition to Chandler, 13 more Tacoma artists, working in a variety of styles and media will interpret 4 different sites/legends that collectively begin to tell the story of Tacoma. Check out Chandler's blog to learn more about the project and her process!
No deck is complete without its jokers. Designed to honor a local hero or locale, the Jokers will be memorialized forever in this (soon to be) classic Tacoma souvenir. Royal Flush backers Wild Bill Jones and LeMay Family Marymount Collection will hold a place of honor in the deck. Rabble rousing, cartooning, and Frost park-chalking, lampooner R.R. Anderson has met with both parties and conducted extensive research and will develop a unique "joker" for each.
Cards will be poker tournament quality, plasticized paper that is slick and easy to deal; packaged in a custom box. Each box will include an insert (like a colophon in printing lingo) listing of all the artists and places represented. The cards will be printed by The United States Playing Card Company which produces and distributes brands such as Bicycle, Bee and Hoyle.
These cards will make an awesome souvenir, gift and collector’s item that does Tacoma PROUD!

The artists are working away on their cards. We have drafts and some completed images that are laid out with their correct rank. The beautifully produced and packaged card decks will be delivered by November and will be available to all supporters right in time for the gift giving season (perfect stocking stuffer!).
Original artwork will be on exhibit in November at the AMOCAT Café in Tacoma. Show your support and be invited to the opening party where you can meet the artists and we can celebrate our great accomplishment together. Original artwork will be available for purchase, but first dibs go to our VIP party attendees, so check out what support level gets you access to that VIP party.
As a THANK YOU
We’ve put together a range of various rewards to thank our financial supporters.
Any pledges to this project will get you loads of appreciation, but also all sorts of great rewards. These are listed on the right side of your screen and include cards, prints, posters, as well as invitations to the launch party and VIP Preview Party. We welcome all levels of support!
How we’ll use the additional money raised
We intend this deck to be a collectible souvenir available in local and regional retail shops, gift stores, bookstores, and even at the airport.
We have surpassed our goal of $13,000, THANK YOU EVERYONE!! This goal was based on an initial run of 2500 decks. Additional funds will allow us to increase the run for the first deck to 5000! All the money raised will go directly to the design, artists fees, processing fees, taxes and printing and production costs.
Any additional funds raised ABOVE the cost to increase the run to 5000 will go toward planning a second edition including even more locations, sites, stories and artists. The second deck will be RED to enable more bridge playing.
We are excited about making a deck of cards that showcases Tacoma in a beautiful way. We hope that you’ll support this project!
Special thanks to Tacoma School of the Arts SOTA for making a video! Much appreciation to: Peyton Day, Chenxi Wang, Lukasz Sieczek and Terri Placentia
