Characteristics of the Volfyirion 2 vs 2 Game Mode

Hello, backers!

How is everything going? Here at Tabula we are hard at work on the new modes unlocked by our Stretch Goals. After our previous explanation of the Solo Mode — for those who missed it, you can find it in our last update — today we are going to delve into the 2 vs 2 Game Mode

In this scenario, the objective will be to destroy the enemy Cities as in the classic game, but in a new challenging way: this time there will be 2 players versus 2 players. Face this perilous journey with an ally on your side and wipe out your opponents Cities!

The most important things to remember about this game mode are the following:

  •  Two decks will be required 
  • The two decks won’t be shuffled together during the game and each Team will use one. This means that it's quicker to put away all the cards after a game without having to sort out two decks.

New features for the Cities

The two players of each team will be able to combine their six cities either symmetrically or asymmetrically to create 3 Strongholds,allowing 2 Troops and 2 Buildings to be positioned on each Stronghold. The two Cities that make a Stronghold combine their Defense values for increased survivability.

The result will be a new disposition in both Playing Areas: one Stronghold will be in front of one player, one Stronghold in front of the other player and the last Stronghold in a shared area between the two players. Furthermore, some assets will be shared as well between the teammates.

The players will have access to the Stronghold in front of them and to the one in the shared area with their teammate and, subsequently, each player will benefit of the bonuses from the Stronghold in front of them and from the shared Stronghold.

New features for Volfyirion

Volfyirion’s movement will be not only to the Strongholds, but also to one of the two Lairs in game, one for each team.

As soon as Volfyirion reaches the Lair, the dragon will be busy guarding the Wonders with its sharpen claws: we call this the “Volfyirion’s clutch”. The dreadful beast will enhance the cost of the Wonders, making it even harder for the players to acquire them.

Like in the classic game it will still be possible to beat the mighty creature and, once a team manages to defeat it, they will acquire the available Wonder Cards... but beware! As soon as Volfyirion is defeated, both Lairs will collapse to the ground and no one will be able to claim them as Cities.

On a last note, as some of you may remember, Volfyirion managed to be among the 60 finalists for the Board Game Geek contest “The 20 Most Anticipated Board Games of 2019”, voting is still open and Volfyirion is ranking (and winning!) in the following categories:

  • Fantasy (current rank 8/60)
  • Cooperative (current rank 9/60)
  • Overall (current rank 26/60)
