Gerrit Vreeman from Fairbanks, Alaska is part of the SystemD team. He has operated molding presses, worked in assembly, and packaged stuff for shipment. Gerrit developed the ozone generator to demonstrate a way to remove Iron and other metals from drinking water. A Science Symposium award wasn't enough for Gerrit. He believed in the product potential of the system and convinced everybody at SystemD. Ozone treatment of water has lots of advantages. New manufacturable designs have made these systems downright cheap to build. It is time to get them out to the world.

The O3 System
The heart of this system is an electric powered "corona discharge" ozone generator that converts oxygen in the air (O2) to ozone (O3). The air is injected into water. Ozone is a powerful oxidizer, way more powerful than chlorine. In the water it oxidizes metals, kills bacteria, and eats up just about any organics there are. Murky polluted water can be totally cleaned up and sterilized by the system.
We designed the O3 system to be reliable, inexpensive, long lasting and efficient. Our primary objective was to make this available to developing countries where children do not have clean water. We decided to design for mass production, effectiveness and reliability.
System D is one of the premier development manufacturers specializing in creative projects by Kickstarter makers. With Gerrit in house, we applied our extensive product experience right from the start of a project. After the demonstrations months of research, testing, analysis, and more research led to our final prototypes. We have identified the best ways to build ozone generators, likely failure points, and cost factors that limit other manufacturers. The O3 system is designed to be reliable and low cost in mass production.
Why is O3 System Better?
The O3 System unit has an air dryer built right into it. This makes it more efficient and safer than any other ozonator on the market. With humid air, other generators make less ozone and even unsafe chemicals like NO2. We made our air dryer "rechargeable" too! When the dryer material turns pink it can't remove any more humidity but you can dry it in the sun or in the oven and use it again and again. Ozone is also a better alternative than chlorine because it decomposes to oxygen quickly, so no residual chemicals are left behind in the water.
Public systems often use potassium permanganate (KMnO4), a common oxidizer among commercial water treatment plants. It leaves residual chemicals in the water after it oxidizes metals out of the water.
How it Works
O3 System Products
Two Models: If you just want to disinfect a bucket of water then get the O3 System Mini, but for a whole house cistern or holding tank you need the O3 System Mega.
O3 System Mini
This is the lowest cost ozone generator we could build with our specifications. We think you will find it is the best deal on the market. There are some cheap ozone makers out there but few of those are designed for long life, high efficiency, and safe output. Nobody offers a generator with a built in air dryer for this price. Even though it is "inexpensive" it is definitely not a "cheap design"! Look through our tech papers if you want more details on effectiveness and reliability. The air dryer is small, rechargeable in the sun or in an oven, and replaceable. This thing will make more ozone per watt than anything out there and it will keep going thousands of hours. We won't junk it up with electronics. It is truly plug and play!
Application: The Mini will clean up a 5 gallon bucket of water. It would be great to have in your car if you run short of water while camping, in your closet if you want to be prepared for polluted tap water after an earthquake or hurricane. You might be able to use it on a larger tank to keep it sterilized, but we would not want you to depend on that.
We plan to offer accessories like a 12V wall plug adapter, solar power, venturi injectors, and pumps so that the Mini can sterilize water as you put it into a tank, You can use the mini by itself in an emergency or while camping, or you could develop a complete treatment system with our other accessories.
Disaster or Relief workers will appreciate having the O3 System Mini for backup in storm, tsunami, war or earthquake areas.
O3 System Mega
A dependable ozone generator that will sterilize a 500 gallon tank or a 50 gallon barrel of water. We are offering it alone, for those who just want to sterilize a barrel of water, or as a complete kit to hook into your water system. The O3 System for Tanks has all the features we originally planned for households in areas contaminated with metals, bacteria, or other pollutants. Ozone is injected into the water as it goes into the tank to sterilize and it bubbles into a filter in the tank to keep it sterilized and to reduce other contaminants. The prototype had a manual timer which we never used, but we will use an electronic timer on the production system. It will have an automatic on/off switch so that it can inject ozone into the fill pipe on demand. The large size air dryer is rechargeable and replaceable.
Application: Most rural homes use holding tanks to store water from various sources or slow wells. Some houses in Hawaii, California, and many other areas of America have cistern tanks collecting rain and runoff water. This system is an alternative to chemicals in those areas. In areas subject to earthquakes, tornadoes or hurricanes people can use this to keep water disinfected.
Disaster or Relief workers will have the O3 System for Tanks as an immediate way to sterilize large tanks or pools of water for people in storm, tsunami, war or earthquake areas. The O3 System for Tanks is a valid long term fix for households and communities even after the wells and water systems are replaced.

Stretch Goal: $50K
O3 Systems for Relief Workers
Being able to accept donations that people can write off is an important goal if this system is going to get to some people with need. We have explored our options here, but we need manufacturing volume and funds to work out relationships or form our own non-profit. If the project reaches $50K we will make sure future donations are deductible. Our plan is to build the best low cost units we can and put all profits into making them available to relief workers to give out.

Right now we have a lot of thoughts, but we think you backers might have some pretty good ideas. We are going to put some of our ideas in an update when our funding goal is reached. Please feel free to suggest more in the comments section!
System D is very experienced at bringing products to market within budget and on time. We know how to fail forward, and we know what it takes to succeed! Usually we help other makers with their products but this one is all in the family. There are many steps and milestones to deliver a product to your door. System D will take you, our backers along for the ride on this one, showing you every one of these steps, the machinery to make it happen, and the success AND failures along the way!
We have already sourced all major components, but sourcing and placing orders is a different thing. We plan to start placing orders for components and manufacturing equipment just as soon as we know Kickstarter backers have stepped up to fund this venture!

The schedule we present here is highly optimistic and may slip by several months. We believe in build - test - figure it out - then build - test - and get it right. Schedules are great, but it is more important to get the product right before it ships. With all that said, this is not a real complex product and we think we can do it in the time we described here. Sometime in August - O3 System meets its funding goal, start ordering!
The rest of this schedule really depends on the level of funding and how many we need to build. This isn't a commitment, it is just an idea of how the schedule will proceed with anticipated funding.
August 31 - Kickstarter Community backs O3 System!!

Gerrit Vreeman is the project creator for SystemD. He will be involved in the communications, sourcing, testing and marketing. Academics are his real interest right now, especially chemical engineering. He is applying to cool places like Stanford, Caltech, and other tech schools so he just wants to see this get out to developing countries.

We need to cover costs, but this one is not about profits. We committed to Gerrit that profits will go to making units to send to relief workers. We have been involved in many successful and unsuccessful Kickstarter projects, and we know how to get it done! Fred is an award winning innovator and engineer. He did the manufacturing design and research. Dale is an experienced mold builder, machinist, and manufacturing expert. His shop has built everything from manhole covers to medical devices. SystemD is excited about bringing our backers into the shop with us. Join us as we bring O3 System to life!
Risks and challenges
1. Component Costs
The quotes we get on components are only good for 30 days, so there is a risk that we'll get funded and then the components cost more. The key component is the voltage multiplier in the Ozone Generator. It is not likely to go up much in price. The second key component is the quartz glass tube ozone module. We tore one down and figure we could build it ourselves if the cost goes up, so it is a risk but we can mitigate it.
2. Time Delays in Delivery
This cannot be avoided if it happens. This is a complex little device, and each component comes from a different supplier or we have to make it ourselves. Delays often happen and they cannot be avoided. We will keep you, our backers informed and let you know when we do whether good or bad news.
3. Increases in Shipping Cost
We calculated in shipping but we don't control those shipping companies. That is a cost risk.
4. Failures of tested units
We plan to test components as they arrive so this should not cause a delay in production, however if a whole batch of components fail it could cause a delay until we find replacement components. That can really get expensive. This risk is difficult to mitigate, but it is better to test and fail units than to send out defective ones. We have tested production batch versions of every component we plan to use, so we don't think this is a significant risk.
There are UL and CSA standards for ozone devices but they are mostly focused on safety and ozone concentrations in air. There is very low risk that we would not meet those standards because they were written for electrostatic air cleaners. CE standards are more applicable. Our plans are to produce all 12V versions of these mostly to make them usable in any developing country, for camping, and to power by renewable energy. Adapters will be specific to the country where they will be used. The 12V device certification requirements for both UL and CE are not as stringent as the inspection and certification requirements for 110V or 220V. At this time we do not plan to seek any certifications and we will offer as an accessory a certified 12V adapter for people to use if they want to plug it into power grid outlets.
If there are unforeseen regulatory barriers (customs, safety, etc.) we will deal with those as they come up.
The risks and challenges with this project are normal ones that are actually associated with every kickstarter project we have done at System D. We are an experienced team. Our knowledge and skills and our familiarity with these processes make us well equipped to deliver a superior product at a very reasonable price. Our research shows that this combination of components will be an effective solution for cleaning water.
