This project started it's life in paper after being asked to construct a sculpture using sheets of paper, in my visual art diploma course. I was fascinated by the simpleness achieved and the sense of a moment frozen in time.
After creating the paper form, I became interested in developing it into something more substantial, so I cut out a design in 1mm aluminium to see how it would look.
The original paper construction consisted of two separate forms (made from the one circle), but comments by others inspired me to stretch my ideas further for the form. I found someone to weld a base on, to create an effect that was more dish-like, however with being a poor penniless student I could only afford to have the base tack welded.
At this stage I started getting interest from friends that I shared the image with, who expressed a desire to actually purchase a finished version of the form. I decided I wanted to further develop sploosh into more of a designer art piece.
I am now at the stage where I am preparing for a production run. The design has been finalised to create 3 standalone pieces that can nest together or be used individually. I have a cutting drawing which will be perfected over the next few weeks. I have quotes for laser cutting the flat form. However it is for the stage of shaping and tooling the press that I have come to create this Kickstarter.
I have approached F!NK + Co, a well known design and fabrication company in Queanbeyan and they are supporting me in the production of making the sploosh pieces. They are willing to allow me to make the pressing form for their machines myself to save on costs.
I need funds to purchase the materials to make the form that will be used to press the sploosh pieces into their finished shape.
Once the form is made and tested, we will begin production.
I will use the same fabrication company to anodise the pieces in a number of colours and possibly also different textures.
With your help I can turn this project into a set of refined and finished marketable sculptural objects. My goal is to have limited editions of these graceful bowls created: for sale in galleries and designer stores, but also to rest in the homes of my Kickstarter supporters.
If we get to 150% The choice of colours will go up from 4 colours to 6 colours.
If we get to 200%, every pledge with a medium sized dish will get a second one included. Either of the same colour, or an alternate colour from the list of available colours.
Risks and challenges
There are a number of risks that may set this project back, however I have allowed extra time in the development process to fully realise this dream and tackle any issues that might arise. With the pool of knowledgeable people available to me and many years of tinkering and playing with metal I am confident that I can complete this project and amaze all of my backers with this professional looking flatware.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
At the moment the flat design is 40cm, 30cm and 18cm which should when formed give dishes of about 35cm, 20cm and 7cm. The small one is kind of a cup, but with cut in sides and wont be welded to the medium one as shown in the prototype/marquette.
They will be pressed out of 2mm aluminium.
