About this project
My name is Kristina Smith I am the writer of Max and the Magnificent Mustache. I have written several children’s stories, but this would be my first published piece.
This whimsical story is about Max, an eight year old boy with a penchant for of all things, MUSTACHES! Max goes to great lengths to try to grow a mustache, he even eats liver and onions (ewhhh) all to no avail; till one day Max mysteriously grows a mustache and it's everything he ever wished for. Max becomes an overnight celebrity, the youngest person to win a national mustache competition and grace the cover of Mustache Magazine; but his mustache grows out of control and the situation becomes pretty hairy when nothing can control his unruly whiskers...
Out of the Mouths of Babes...
Max and the Magnificent Mustache as told by Oscar!
Why a mustache, why not a beard? Do you have something against beards?
No, no, no you have it all wrong! I love all facial hair; beards, mustaches, eyebrows, etc. If it makes you feel any better I will consider writing a story and include beards.
"With Great Mustache Comes Great Responsibility"...
First of all I wanted to write a book that would make children laugh out loud, there is nothing more contagious than the laughter of children. My story isn't intended to be too terrible moral although it does have a universal message that I believe will resonate in the hearts of readers young and old and that is… "Not everything you wish for is all it’s cracked up to be; so be careful what you wish for, because it just might come true". Max and the Magnificent Mustache stirs a child's imagination, curiosity and intellect; with a message that is sure to open up the lines of communication, which I found out first hand when I read my manuscript to some of my toughest critics....Second Graders!
It was AMAZING to watch their faces and to hear what they had to say about the story. Some kids had alternate endings for me and new adventures for max. Some kids shared their deepest wishes, some were silly, some were serious, but wishes all the same. I was blown away when one little girl told me...she thought Max's mustache grew so out of control because of all the attention he was getting, "he let it all go to his head" she said. Well, I thought she must be a comedian or one pretty smart cookie - either way her reasoning was pretty deep for an eight year old!
The outpouring of support I received from all the children was very encouraging and when I read all their Thank You letters that their teacher Mrs. Lopez sent me, well, it only fueled my desire to get this book published ASAP!
Now I already have an Illustrator, her name is Valentina Felce. I found Valentina in the wonderful world of Etsy one day while looking for inspiration. I was immediately enamored by her work as you will soon see. The illustrations in the book are playful with a touch of nostalgia and even the dolls used in the artwork are hand-crafted by Valentina Felce. That's right, not only is she a wonderful illustrator but she hand-crafts dolls as well. Illustrating with the dolls helps bring the book to life, adding layers and textures; making the book even more tangible.
Readers will also be given the chance to purchase Max dolls, along with the Bandeady Brothers (the villains in the story). What a wonderful gift it will be for a child to have their own Max doll, to play along with the story and to spend hours creating their own Max adventures. Check out Valentina's etsy store and get a feel for the unique and quality dolls she creates. http://www.etsy.com/shop/BlueRaspberryDesigns
The short and long of it...
We are self-publishing Max and the Magnificent Mustache, unlike big publishing houses that cover all the cost of getting the word out to the media, editing, copy editing, web design, press kits, artwork, design & typesetting, printing, marketing, sales, etc...We unfortunately don't have that luxury YET!
This process is extremely expensive but through Amazon we are able to publish a paperback book and an e-book for those with nook/kindle; all within our means. Your pledges will also go toward printing the book in hardcover, not just in English but in different languages as well. This is the most expensive step, to publish the book in hardback; since we will be using a more traditional printing service for this process. It cost upwards of $3,000 or more for 500 fully illustrated and colored hardcover books; we want to print as many as we can, not just to sell but we want to be able to gift Max and the Magnificent Mustache to school library's and children's hospitals. Your pledges will also go toward making a interactive book app, the purchasing of ISBN numbers for all the books, publishing, editing, creating a fun, kid friendly website, the finished illustrations, the max dolls, and the sales and marketing of this book. Sooooooo....
Will you help me get my book into the hands of children, readers young and old and mustache enthusiast all over the world?

Risks and challenges
We know things could get pretty hairy if we don't meet our goal... but we believe in this story, and we are confident we can handle any set-back that may come our way. We understand that even with the best laid plans "STUFF" happens. Challenges that may include delays in the actual printing of the book. So we have set up some fun rewards for our backers to receive while waiting. We appreciate all the support you have shown us on this AMAZING journey, so Thank You! Thank you!
