About

Furthering our mission to premiere substantial works by emerging composers, performing beloved masterworks, and blending in a twist of pop; Symphony Number One returns for our 2019-20 season: BRIDGES. Acclaimed by the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Magazine, Baltimore Style, Fanfare Magazine, the Baltimore Business Journal, and the Baltimore Social Innovation Journal, SNO performs with precision and a passion for contemporary music.

SNO has recently been named as a FINALIST for the American Prize in Orchestral Performance for our 2017-2018 Season!. Our passion for excellence, and dedication to substantial new compositions led to our recognition for orchestral achievement. We are eager to build upon our past successes and continue to premiere works by emerging artists in our upcoming season.

Take a look at highlights from our upcoming season, possible with your support:

Awakened

  • September 7&8, 2019

Symphony Number One returns for another year of seasoned classics alongside stunning new music by emerging composers around the globe! Our first concert will feature Baltimore's own Dr. James Lee III, Professor of Composition and Theory at Morgan State University. The world premiere of "Chamber Symphony: Awakened to Eternal Realities", Lee's substantial new work for chamber orchestra, will be paired with Arnold Schoenberg's "Chamber Symphony No. 1" for two performances of exceptional music!

In Search of Imagery

  • February 2020

Our second concert this season continues in our mission to showcase emerging composers, while pairing beloved works from past composers. This concert will feature the world premiere of two substantial compositions for chamber orchestra. In this amazing concert, we will combine the familiarity of Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring" with the excitement of Douglas Buchanan's "Variations on a Shape-Note Hymn", and the aural and visual pictures of Kirsten Broberg's "In Search of Imagery".

Five Year Anniversary - Album Release

  • May 8, 2020

Symphony Number One celebrates five years with its fifth commercial release! To mark the occasion, SNO will be throwing our biggest party yet.

More

We have even more exciting shovel-ready projects that we're eager to produce with your support! We have a $12,000 Stretch-Goal that will allow us to expand our offerings. More details to come.

Where Your Money Goes

Symphony Number One is a conduit in service of modern composers and diverse audiences. Your support will have a lasting impact on not only the lives and careers of our featured composers and performers, but also on the chamber orchestra repertoire and the international new music community. This season, your support is directly funding commissions and performances of pieces by composers like James Lee III, Douglas Buchanan, and Kirsten Broberg.

In addition to allowing us to commission amazing works by great emerging composers, the funds you provide directly underwrite the costs of producing our concerts and enable us to:

  • Pay our core ensemble and guest artists
  • Book the best concert venues
  • Record every performance and offer high-quality, multi-camera videos.
  • Produce and market high-quality commercial audio recordings
  • Organize and fund intimate performances of works for smaller ensembles as part of our Beethoven’s Kitchen Series
  • Publicize our concerts through print, broadcast, and electronic media
  • Cover production costs such as lighting and sound
  • Pay municipal and state fees, music rental fees, and other operating expenses

Symphony Number One is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit performing arts organization.

He was the recipient of a Bruno Walter Fellowship at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in 2010 and a Finalist for the 2018-19 American Prize in Conducting. Risks and challenges

With a team of people who have launched many successful funding campaigns for projects in the past, we walk in with our eyes open to the challenges that growing organizations face. Hidden venue or rental costs, last-minute changes, and even the weather can conspire to make projects like these challenging to complete. But that is also the thrill of live performances: With our experience, these performances are in steady hands from beginning to end.
