Sword & Plough is a quadruple bottom line bag company that works with veterans to repurpose military surplus fabric into stylish bags.
Sword & Plough is ...
1. REPURPOSED for a PURPOSE. From recycling military surplus, to working with veterans, Sword & Plough delivers high impact through its durable and stylish bags.
2. 100% Made in America. Our products are hand crafted in the U.S. from raw materials made within the United States.
3. Genuine. Our team is led by a U.S. Army officer and her sister who grew up in a military family. We work with manufacturers with veteran sewers who are transitioning to civilian life.
4. Inclusive. We want you to join our story! By owning a Sword & Plough bag, you become a model for veteran empowerment, positive social change, and style!
5. Environmentally Friendly. By upcycling military surplus material, S&P uses up to 95% less energy and raw materials than bags made from non-recycled materials.
Thanks for checking out our project!
Sword & Plough bridges veteran empowerment, sustainable design, and classic fashion all in one product. We are a quadruple bottom line (people, purpose, planet, profit) bag company that works with American veterans to repurpose military surplus fabric into durable and stylish bags.
My sister, Betsy, and I wanted to create something that would emotionally and physically touch civilians in their everyday lives and remind them, in a beautiful way, of the challenges our country and veterans face, and the power that everyone has to help.
Everyone uses a bag of some sort throughout their day. By recycling and repurposing military gear with a fashionable touch and working with veterans to sew our products, we create sturdy and sophisticated bags. With your help we will be able to create veteran jobs, reduce landfill waste, and strengthen civil-military understanding. In this way, our bags are rugged, refined and relevant.
After a year devoted to developing our mission and prototypes through the Middlebury Center for Social Entrepreneurship and the Dell Summer Social Innovation lab, and establishing proof of concept by winning the Harvard Pitch for Change Competition, we are ready to invite you to join our mission!
We've finalized the prototypes, have established relationships with our manufacturers, and most importantly, we have secured the recycled materials ...we just need your help in reaching our goal of $20,000 to get the first line going. All Kickstarter funding will go towards covering the production and launch of our first line of bags.
Please support at whatever level you're comfortable with. We'll pay you back with beautifully handcrafted bags and our extreme gratitude for accepting this invitation to empower veterans through sustainable fashion.
Thanks for your support!

Repurposed for a Purpose
What's in a name?
We use only recycled, natural, and organic fabrics. If the fabric doesn't have a cool story, we won't use it. These repurposed military materials paired with rich, local, Colorado eco-leather combine to make classic and durable designs.
Made in America, with care for the Planet.
Everything from the fabric to the packaging is made in the USA. Like recently successful Kickstarter projects Ministry of Supply and Flint and Tinder, we’re committed to bringing jobs to the U.S.
Where we are now:
• The surplus is ready to be repurposed. Through over a dozen prototypes, we’ve finalized our rugged and refined designs and they are ready for production.
• We’ve partnered with three veteran manufacturers and are ready to start making bags!
We’re down to the final barrier. We need your help to bring Sword & Plough to life. The money will go towards covering the production costs of our first line of bags along with fixed and variable costs of making the bags in the USA.
OUR REWARDS (Feel free to combine these, or check out our packages. Please note that the products pictured below are prototypes. The final product you receive may look slightly different.)
THANK YOU for your support!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We've spent most of the last year working with our team and partners to mitigate as many risks as possible, however, we know there will still be hurdles along the way. We will always be transparent with our community about challenges, including these:
IN THE EVENT OF EPIC DEMAND
We certainly wouldn't be the first Kickstarter project to bump into this problem, so we've taken the wisdom of past success stories and have laid out contingency plans in the event of massive support from backers. We’ve confirmed that our manufacturing partners can take on additional units, and we’ve located additional surplus to be repurposed.
THE BEAUTY OF REPURPOSED MATERIAL
All of our materials are made in the USA and at least 80% of each bag is made from repurposed military surplus material. Given these sources, there's a chance that material color may vary slightly from bag to bag. That is the beauty of upcycled military surplus. Each piece of surplus carries a unique legacy that is visible in its slight color variations. Be confident that your bag will look similar to those shown on Kickstarter, but be aware that slight color variations are what make our bags so beautiful and one-of-a-kind.
We collect military surplus material that would otherwise be thrown away. Luckily for Sword & Plough, there is A LOT of surplus that is sitting around waiting to be thrown away OR transformed into a beautiful bag. While we do not foresee material supply to be a problem, we do acknowledge the unique set of challenges that arise when collecting raw material from multiple sources rather than ordering yardage from a factory. The most prominent challenge is the potential for delays, but we will try to mitigate this by making sure there is advance notice given to suppliers on the volume we expect from the Kickstarter campaign.
We're shipping our products through the mail. There is general risk in the reliability of shipping companies, but we'll make sure we keep track of your order at all times and communicate its progress openly to you.
AND FINALLY, A PROMISE
Sword & Plough is the cumulative result of months of design thinking, hand-sewn prototyping, drafting and redrafting of patterns, surveying, and thousands of conversations to improve our products and amplify our mission. More than anything, we want to see this project through and empower you with the ability to be a model for sustainable fashion. We promise to do whatever it takes to make that possible!
Here at Sword & Plough we believe integrity is the heart and soul of every successful company. Our integrity is defined by how we handle the risks and challenges we face. We will do everything it takes to make sure our customers are happy, not only with the products they receive, but with our service as well.
Yes! Please see the various rewards for their associated international shipping rates.
Most American bag companies do not manufacture their products in the United States. Unlike industry competitors Orvis, Fjallraven, Jack Spade, Longchamp, and RRL, Sword & Plough is the only company that manufactures entirely in the USA. Don't forget that we provide additional impact through the employment of veterans and reduction of waste.
At this time Kickstarter does not support the simultaneous purchase of multiple rewards. However, the way around this is to simply select a reward and then pledge the additional value of the other rewards that you want. At the end of the Kickstarter period we will send around a survey that will allow you to remind us of your multiple purchases.
"This is a pretty awesome idea! Having been overseas twice now and seeing the amount of material that we actually don't use and have to burn or waste across the pond it is good to see someone is actually making it useful! Can't wait to see the products! The many we have lost will never be forgotten." - SGT Clinton Villines, U.S. Army Infantryman
