Born on the workbench of a two car garage in Southern Indiana, Switchyard Brewing Company is a start-up destination brewpub that is a dream of native Hoosier owners, Kurtis Cummings & Michael Korus. Founded alongside family, friends, and tradition, in a passionate pursuit of developing our craft, Switchyard believes that small business can, and should be a catalyst for positive change in their communities.
For two years, we have been visiting breweries and brewpubs across the country. We tell our wives this is "market research", they still don't believe us. We have spent hours chatting with other owners, brewmasters, and employees about what was done right, and what could have been done differently, to make sure that our start is as good as it possibly can be.
We have taken thousands of pictures of shiny stainless steel fermentation tanks, menus, food, glassware, bars, landscaping, and the occasional selfie.
There have been all-nighters where we have worked on our business plan. We have brewed countless trial batches along the way, and learned what our quality standards are. As a result, we have even dumped gallons of test batches that just didn't meet those standards. We have sat through meeting after meeting with supporters, investors, lawyers, trusted friendly advisers, and even a couple who said we couldn't do it.
And now, here we are.
Two years in and we are so much closer than before. Nestled on the near Southside of downtown Bloomington, Indiana, our 11,000 Sq. Ft., new construction, destination brewpub will be built on the now vacant RCA/Thompson site.
About The Brewery
Opening a destination brew pub has been our dream and unifying vision. We knew early on that we could not accomplish such a task alone and needed help from others. That is what Switchyard is all about: community, creativity, and culture.
We are creating the perfect setting to share a unique experience with friends amongst great beer, music, and food. We believe that the design and set-up of the physical space in an urban setting sets the stage for that very unique customer experience that only a destination brewpub can provide.
Besides being a production brewery, Switchyard will also feature a full kitchen, expansive outdoor patio space, special event spaces, live music, and also serve as an early morning co-work location.
With food that celebrates the Midwestern table, we will support our local farmers and source as many ingredients locally as possible. Once open, spent grain from our brewing process will be given to Dishman Cattle Company and other local farmers. The cattle from their ranch will provide the brewpub with hormone free, free range, beef finished out on our spent grain.
We are already placing sustainable techniques by feeding our spent grain to Farmer Joe's cattle across the street from the garage we brew in now. Also, we use the clean water from the brewing process to water our vegetable gardens. We recycle everything, and compost as much as we can. We can't wait to support our community in this way on a larger scale.
PATIO & LIVE MUSIC
Our patio will be a park-like setting, featuring beautiful gardens, a fire pit, live music stage, and plenty of seating for dining. The brewpub will also have a stage to keep the music going in the event of bad weather. Don't worry, we have designed the brewpub to provide spaces where the volume of the live music will be comfortable enough to enjoy a conversation. We believe music should compliment the experience, not overwhelm it.
On the patio, we will feature laser engraved pavers from our Switchyard Starters. These pavers will tell the story of the community that came together to build the brewery.
The Midwestern entrepreneurial spirit is very alive in Bloomington. To support this movement, we will open our doors every morning for other entrepreneurs to work, meet with their teams, or simply come in for a cup of coffee. Our WiFi will be one of the fastest in town, and completely free to users of our co-work space. Come in, hang out, and build something great in a comfortable setting!
Our brewpub will be the perfect setting to host anything from holiday parties to corporate events. We look forward to partnering with local non-profits to host silent auctions and benefit events.
How does this work? How can I help?
Kickstarter helps start-up businesses, like Switchyard, create projects with support of their communities.
We need lots of small donations from people who love small business, craft beer, local food, and live music. Kickstarter is an all or nothing campaign. So every single supporter is critical to the launch of Switchyard.
Join the grassroots campaign to make Switchyard a reality by following these easy steps
Your credit card will only be charged if we meet our goal of $30,000 by Thu, Nov 19 2015.
Where does the money raised go?
The process of opening a destination brewery is not for the faint of heart. With your help, we will build our brewpub from the ground up. But, before we can begin commercial production of our beer, and sell a single pint, Switchyard needs to be licensed by the State & Federal governments.
The money raised from this Kickstarter Campaign will provide the capital needed to launch us into our construction phase.
The other things we need capital for include:
- Fees for licensing (city, state, federal)
- Legal services
Kickstarter doesn't allow alcohol as a reward, respecting this policy check our our rewards list to the right of the page, or just below. We have a ton of very unique items and experiences that allow you to become part of our story.
At $71,890 we will make history as the most funded brewery on Kickstarter!
Once we reach our initial funding goal of $30,000 the work isn't finished. A brewpub is a very capital intensive project. We are excited to offer four stretch goals that will be unlocked as we reach each goal.
Risks and challenges
As with opening any new business, some degree of risk does exist and as responsible business owners, we feel obligated to explain them to you. A brewpub business model comes with licensing and permitting risks. Brewpubs are very equipment and infrastructure intensive, requiring the highest levels of sanitization and mechanical maintenance.
As with any journey, we have already encountered many obstacles that have caused us to reflect, adjust our thinking, and even go with a slightly different path. While we are sure that we haven't thought of every problem that we will encounter, we have assembled a team of individuals that are experts in their respective crafts that we can trust and rely on. It truly "takes a village" and we have assembled the best team to help us navigate through our journey.
Many of our rewards rely on vendors for fulfillment, a problem with any of them could lead to delays or a change in plans. We would seek new vendors as soon as a problem arose, but there are no guarantees that we could produce identical rewards in some cases.
The greatest risk for backers comes from the nature of the start-up business. Switchyard Brewing Company is young, has no revenue, and still faces many challenges to opening. These circumstances often create cash flow problems for young companies.
We have planned our campaign finances and rewards very carefully, however no start-up is immune to cash flow issues. Such circumstances could threaten our ability to deliver rewards, although we would do absolutely everything in our power to avoid such a situation.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
