NEW REWARD: CUSTOM ARTIST ILLUSTRATED
GRANDINO is an emerging menswear collection that has revisited the classic dress shirt and invented a completely new accessory that transforms your outfit. Driven to promote individual and unique style, GRANDINO wants to change how you wear dress shirts.
Headed by Grant McGrath, GRANDINO has been a passion project and vehicle for selling and producing the Switch Cuff.
THE SWITCH CUFF
The Switch Cuff is the answer to shirt monotony and boredom. Sick of the same old shirts everyone has, but don’t want to spend $150 for designer wear? The Switch Cuff is the solution that gives the appearance of a new and unique shirt for a fraction of the price.
- CUSTOMIZE ANY DRESS SHIRT
- Fits on any brand or size
- Wear under your blazer or jacket for a subtle accent
- Makes any dress shirt cuff link ready
- Designed to blend into your shirt
The Switch Cuff wraps around your cuff and attaches to the button already on your shirt. Unlike a tie or pocket square, Switch Cuffs look and feel like part of your shirt. With this variation in cuff pattern, you have a completely new, one-of-a-kind shirt in 5 seconds.
GRANDINO offers a meticulously curated selection of styles that will upgrade your staples (white and blues) but can be also be matched or clashed with most of whatever else you have in your closet.
We have paired 3 sets of prints for this Cuffing Season:
1. Funk Deco: paisley + geometric
2. Moroccan Blue: geometric Moroccan + fleur de lis
3. Don Flora: floral + seersucker
Inspired by the diversity of fashion and flavor of New York each combo has one classic and one bold print.
EVERYONE HAS THE SAME SHIRT Well..not everyone, but seeing an infinite supply of the same dress shirts mass produced in department stores felt like it was hard to get something really unique. Instead of cashing out for a higher end designer shirt I usually chose the eclectic, unfiltered, and awesomely random experience of shopping in thrift stores, hunting for undiscovered gems.
Getting ready to go out one night, looking at my limited clean shirt options, one had a pretty loud floral print and wasn’t really the vibe I wanted. The other was a basic red shirt, that was nothing special. Neither was what I wanted to wear. At that moment, it hit me, looking at both shirts I realized that I wanted something in the middle that had design elements of both shirts. I cut off one of the cuffs of the floral shirt and wrapped it around the solid red shirt's cuff. Boom! Switch Cuffs were born.
DESIGN CHALLENGE After user testing some quick and dirty prototypes I was able to formulate some more specific design objectives for this attachable cuff (no name yet at this point). Universal fit and ease of use were most important. I wanted something that could be seamlessly attached to any button up shirt with the quiet interchangeability and stylish class of a James Bond accessory.
Obstacles to a one size fits all cuff solution:
1. Shirt cuff width and length can both vary up to 1.5” between brands and sizes.
2. Button placement and amount of buttons on each cuff varies greatly between brands and cuff types
FIRST PROTOTYPES To make some quick, workable prototypes I used a heat activated fusible in place of sewing. These first tangible prototypes that I was able to wear gave me the rush and excitement that I was bringing something new into the world that no one had ever seen before. Seeing people’s reactions of surprise and delight to this new form of customization motivated me to continue developing a formal product.
HANDMADE IN NEW YORK
MEASUREMENTS 11.5” x 2.75” with square corners. The Switch Cuff is wide enough to fully cover any single button barrel cuff. A huge focus for the design was to get the dimensions just right so the Switch Cuff blends in seamlessly to be part of the shirt.
FABRICS All cuffs are in the cotton family, we may mix anything from poplins, oxfords, print, herringbone, or pin-dot weaves.
CONSTRUCTION Hand sewn with single needle stitch. The cuffs are fused with a medium interlining to give a crisp form but light enough to where you don’t notice the cuff is on the shirt.
ADJUSTABLE FIT The cuff has two button holes on the right side that can be used to make the fit tighter or looser depending on your shirt and wrist size.
MACHINE WASHABLE The interlining give it a sturdy enough form where it is easy to iron and give a freshly dry-cleaned look and feel. Also strong enough to go in the washer.
CUFF BARREL TYPES Our priority and guarantee is covering the most common cuff barrel type: single button.
CUFFLINKS In addition to transforming your dress shirt, Switch Cuffs allow you to wear cufflinks with any shirt.
Risks and challenges
GRANDINO has been manufacturing Switch Cuffs in the Garment District and fulfilling orders from our online store for over a year and half. For this Kickstarter campaign the Switch Cuff Reversible is going to utilize an already established and tested manufacturing process.
Christmas delivery- first 200 backers
In anticipation of making the holiday delivery we have already stocked packaging, fabric and begun producing units. We will continue to produce the new Reversible Cuffs during the campaign as we see orders coming in and trending towards reaching our goal of $5,000.
Early Bird January delivery
We have pre-purchased a large stock of the limited cotton prints in anticipation for this campaign. There is ample production time for fulfilling all Early Bird orders by the January delivery goal.
If there is crazy, unexpected success (awesome problem to have!) we will need to re-produce more of the cotton prints and the delivery may shift from early to late February or March.
