UPDATE 1/29 - We did it! we've achieved basic funding! But we could use just a little bit more... we didn't want to ask for it for fear that we wouldn't be funded at all, but any tour, especially one this complicated, needs a tour manager. It's going to cost $1k more, but we're hoping the community could help us out a little more. We've got over 50 hours and we're already 25% of the way there! What do you think, can we get to $10,500 and bring a tour manager on board??? Please?
UPDATE 1/22 - Steamytech is SO committed to making this happen that they've offered to give this phenomenal pin with movable gears to anyone who adds just $35 to any reward level (so if the reward is $50, pledge $85)!
These are awesome, check out the video:
Imagine seeing a multitude of your favorite Steampunk and retro-futurist bands all in one place!
Steamstock 2012 was a crowd-funded Steampunk music festival in San Francisco, CA. You can see video of it down at the bottom! Among its most memorable features was that it was held in a retrofitted Ford Motor Factory with a breathtaking view of the San Francisco Bay. Also, and almost as rare, it was a chance to see 13 of the best musicians in the Steampunk world on two stages in ONE day jammed full of non-stop live music. With one stage ending as the other began... some have said it ran like clockwork!
It's happening again!
The weekend of July 27th and 28th, Steamstock will once again invade The Craneway Pavilion, the same venue that everyone is raving about from last year.
Now imagine it happening again AND at your doorstep...
This year we hope to duplicate and expand on our successes—we're doing a Kickstarter not for our event itself, but rather to fund a tour that would bring some of the bands to you!
This tour would feature:
If this Kickstarter is funded, these bands will be traveling to us by train. Trains that depart from Atlanta and New York around the 19th and 20th, travel across the country by way of Philadelphia and Chicago (hopefully with a stop in the midwest) to Steamstock in San Francisco, play the festival and then return around home coming through The South, hopefully including Tennessee and New Orleans, then returning to New York and Atlanta on Aug 4th!
At its basic level. this tour will utilize Amtrak's multi-stop badge, which allows for 8 stops for just $440 per ticket! Do you know what that means? That means you can COME WITH US! If we get enough people coming, we might even be able to put together a discounted group package! So you can start from wherever you are and follow the tour, then return home!
If you want to try to arrange something like this, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll try to figure out how to get you on board. Please do this before purchasing the tour tickets. Information about exactly what cities we'll be stopping in will be available as soon as it's finalized.
If we get well enough funded, we might even be able to add on more dates. :-)
What your contribution means...
This helps Steamstock because it relieves our travel cost burden, which makes it more feasible to have a tremendous second year, with MAJOR headliners. It also keeps our ticket costs down AND helps us have money to pay the artists at the same time. All of these things allow us to further our mission to provide opportunities and financial support for Steampunk musicians.
It helps the community because of the publicity that the tour is sure to garner.
And it helps you because it means MORE STEAMPUNK, closer to you!!!
Exact cities and dates will be forthcoming as the tour develops, but we're entering the holiday buying season and we didn't want to miss the opportunity to launch in time for that. Kickstarter rewards won't be delivered until after the Kickstarter concludes, but you can print out a certificate and let your loved ones know that not only did you get THEM something awesome, you helped BRING AWESOMENESS INTO THE WORLD!!!
Here's the video from last year so you know what we mean:
Also, although the actual tour itself will be funded for the target amount, we feel strongly that the tour would be a better package with some amazing DJs and dance instructors and maybe even some cirque performers on board, so any amount above our goal will be used to those ends to bring the whole country the best show that we can!
Risks and challenges
The risks involved in this Kickstarter are multiple, but we have back-up plans!!!
In a worst case scenario, there's always the option to fulfill much the same objective by renting a car and driving. But, that's been done. And Steampunks love trains, so we're hoping you can help us make this first-of-its-kind Steampunk caravan a reality!
Something might come up and all of the bands might not be able to participate.
Well, that happens sometimes and it would be sad if it happened here, but we can certainly do the tour with the other bands and maybe we could find another phenomenal musical ensemble to fill in for them!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
