Cupcakes made with beer?! Heck. Yes. We mix craft beer right into the batter to make our tasty treats.
We’d like to introduce you to Sweet and Stout.
We use local and regional craft beer in our recipes and combine them with high quality ingredients to create moist, flavorful and unique cupcakes.
You might be saying to yourself “What an odd combination! Why would anyone do that?” For now, you’ll have to trust me when I say that beer cupcakes are spectacular. Imagine, a dark delicious stout paired with salted chocolate and caramel. Perhaps a lighter beer is your thing, like a deliciously crisp IPA with a spicy chipotle apple pecan cupcake. At Sweet and Stout, seemingly opposites come together to make magic happen. Magic, right in your mouth.
Originally we—my fiancé, Dylan, and I—had just wanted to write a blog about pairing beer with cupcakes, our two favorite things. On St. Patrick’s Day, I found a recipe for a chocolate stout cake and fell in love! If I could bake beer right into the cake using that recipe, I figured I could incorporate beer into all kinds of cake. We don’t limit ourselves and have come up with many unique beer and cake batter pairings of our own.
Over the last few months, we’ve baked a different flavor of beer cake almost every weekend. While sometimes it can be exhausting baking every weekend, it really is fun coming up with new flavors and posting the results for people to check out. Usually we end up with a few dozen cupcakes on Sunday, so, often our (lucky) coworkers get a special treat on Monday mornings. Who couldn’t use a cupcake to brighten up a Monday, really?
This is where you, our loyal fans, come in: We want to take Sweet and Stout to the next level. We’ve got a place lined up that wants to sell our cupcakes here in Spokane. All we need to do is get the business side of things finalized. Your support will help us acquire the use of a commercial kitchen, and help us get our ingredients and baking supplies gathered so that we can make our first commercial batch of cupcakes. We’re even going to throw a beer-cupcake release party when this is all said and done, and we would love to meet you!
Our flavors vary—from a classic like red velvet cupcakes—to more offbeat flavors like maple bacon smoked porter cupcakes. The possibilities are endless, and we will continue the great beer-cupcake experiment until we run out of beer to try (never going to happen!) Every sip of a new beer we try could be involved in our next recipe. You never know when inspiration will hit, so that’s why we must try as many different beers as possible.
We’ve had AMAZING responses so far from the breweries whose beers we have incorporated into our recipes. Boundary Bay Brewery loved our ESB Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt cupcake recipe so much that one of their chefs wants to use it for her wedding cupcakes! People have even emailed us asking if we could whip up a few dozen and ship them overnight to various places.
We want to take Sweet and Stout from a blog to a bakery. It’s because of the encouragement from family, friends and people like you that have inspired us to make this happen. Thank you for reading, donating, and following along. Stay tuned to see how this turns out!
