About this project
A quick but challenging card game by Yoshiyuki Arai, that can be played either solo or cooperatively.
The Kickstarter Limited Edition will feature additional, hidden content that can be unlocked as you play, leading to new scenarios with different and harder challenges in the course of an ongoing saga.

22h before the end of the campaign we have reached all possible stretch goals for Fantasy Defense, giving all KS-Limited backers a fully featured campaign expansion for free (retail value: 15€), with the following contents:
- 5 full chapters of the campaign each including a piece of the Fantasy Defense Story, a changed scenario to play and new enemies and defenders. In total that means
- 18 new and different Enemy Cards
- 37 new Defender Cards, making up a whole new race for you to play instead of the 2 standard races.
- The KS-limited Stone King Expansion Box
- After we have unlocked the final SG the epilogue chapter with a challenging 8-card boss is now also included in this expansion!
In addition we have unlocked our Material Upgrade: Fortified Battlements, giving the following SG for free to backers of all levels:
- Linen finish for all cards
- A beautiful 3d tower piece Morale Tracker
Finally, we have unlocked the Social Media Goal, adding the Event Pack: Bleak Season to the game for all KS-Limited backers.

We're taking a complete, finished game and expanding it with your help - adding hidden content and new layers of gameplay.
We are aiming to provide a uniquely challenging solo/cooperative game that doesn´t get boring after you beat it. It gets harder.

All additional chapters are KS Limited content and will never be available in retail. The KS Limited Edition will only be available in our online shop in small numbers after the campaign ends.
In Fantasy Defense, players lead the resistance of a mighty city besieged by forces of evil – waves of orcs, goblins, and far worse.
At the beginning of each game, 'stack' the Enemy Deck with a powerful dragon at the bottom. Then set the city morale to 20, lay out the gate tiles, and shuffle the Defenders Deck (humans or elves).
You're ready for battle!
Every round consists of the following phases in order:
- Invasion Phase (new enemies arrive and lay siege to city gates)
- Strategy Phase (deploy units and command special abilities)
- Battle Phase (resolve action at besieged gates)
- Reinforcement Phase (draw new cards and prepare for more invaders)

We will have two different kinds of additional content:
New chapters for our campaign story provide new (allied and enemy) units and sometimes additional instructions. Beat each chapter to unlock the next in an ongoing saga.
Additionally, our Social Media Stretch Goal, Mercenary, and Evil Lieutenant Levels provide side stories with unique unlock conditions.
Backers of the Creative Pledge Levels (Mercenary Leader or Evil Lieutenant) will be able to design a unit, boss or enemy minion, including their gameplay ability and unlock condition in cooperation with us.
We will provide assistance and gameplay testing. We reserve the right to decline ideas that we feel don´t fit the overall spirit of the game.
You will be able to give rough instructions on what illustrations should look like but our artist will not put your likeness in the game or work from photos!
The basic, retail edition of the game and all additional cards used in gameplay will be language independent.
The additional unlockable content will include a narrative as well as rules cards that are physically only available in English. However, we plan to provide this additional material online in a way that allows for a playing experience that is just as good as that of a native English reader (i.e. in seperate files for different chapters). Exact availability of languages for these online files will be decided after the end of the campaign but currently we guarantee: German, French and Korean.

Yoshiyuki Arai is an enigmatic veteran designer from Japan, whose previous works include Dungeon War and Meikyu Kingdom Card Game. Follow him on Twitter! Fantasy Defense is based on his recent design Defense Three Kingdoms.
Yann Tisseron is a multidisciplinary artist based in France. After completing studies at the Emile Cohl School of Arts, he signed a three volume comic series (Shanghai) and produced an illustrated version of l'Odysee. He currently produces work for Sotheby's, the Parisian advertising agency Pavillon Noir, and will release an illustrated book of large scale paintings in 2018. Yann is the main artist for Fantasy Defense and responsible for bringing its world to life.
Vincent Dutrait graduated from the Emile Cohl School of Art in 1994. He is best known for his prolific work in the boardgames industry, and since 1997 has produced a huge amount of illustrations for children's books. He is currently the Creative Director at both Holy Grail Games and Mandoo Games. Vincent has illustrated RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, boardgames such as Lewis & Clark, Broom Service, Rising 5, Lovecraft Letter, Raptor, New York 1901, and many more! Vincent is the Creative Director of Mandoo Games and the Art Director for Fantasy Defense.
Mandoo Games is a boardgame publishing and consulting company based in Korea. Founder Kevin Kim has been working in game development, production and international trade since 2002. Kevin managed the development of Coconuts (bgg #1 ranked children's game), Abraca... what? and other projects during his time at Korea Boardgames. Mandoo Games also manages the export business for several Asian companies, and has published nearly a dozen titles – most recently Rising 5. Joining Kevin is Evan Song, Co-Author of Rising 5: Runes of Asteros and several other games. He is the main force responsible for the game development and balancing of Fantasy Defense.
Sweet Lemon Publishing is a company based in Bonn, Germany. Founders Simon Schwanhäußer and Leon Scheuber have worked in the boardgame industry for several years. SLP is providing editorial, production and marketing support in the boardgame field. Additionally they operate NiceGameShop - an online shop for rare games - and they have recently started to independently release games they like, starting with Terrible Monster in 2016. For Fantasy Defense they are working on the Kickstarter campaign, the unlockables concept, narrative design and additional gameplay design for the expanded game content.
We are planning to charge for shipping after the campaign ends via a pledge manager. We are planning to provide EU-Friendly as well as US-Friendly and South-Korea friendly shipping!
Our estimated shipping costs are based on untracked and uninsured shipping, to keep the costs reasonable. We are hoping to provide the option for tracked shipping as well, but it will come at a higher cost.
Update: We´ve done some work on the shipping front and we can now offer Canada-Friendly and Australia-Friendly Shipping as well!
We have to partly include the additional cost of using the fulfillment hubs (their charges + transport to the hub) in the calculation and this will make the "Friendly" shipping estimate more expensive than if we send your game from our offices in Germany (but will also not include any customs risk/delay).
If you are from Canada or Australia you´ll still have the option to choose "Rest of the World" if it does indeed turn out to be cheaper.
The expected shipping costs for individual basic, limited and deluxe pledges are:
EU: 5 Euro
US: 8 Euro
Korea: 5 Euro
Canada: 12 Euro
Australia: 14 Euro
Rest of the World: 10 Euro
Essen Pickup: 0 Euro

Risks and challenges
We are an independent game company and Fantasy Defense is a big project for us. We don´t claim to be perfect but we own up to our mistakes and if there are difficulties on the way we will communicate clearly with our backers and do our best to fix whatever problems may arise.
Additionally, we are running this project with the help of experienced partners and we can rely on an extensive network of industry contacts in order to make things happen.
The basic content for the game is finished and balanced. However, we have not yet fully balanced all content from possible stretchgoals. Our schedule until fall leaves ample time for additional balancing work, but if we are exceptionally successful with the kickstarter campaign, we might need to delay the production and end up missing our planned release date by a few weeks. We´re prepared to make this hard choice if needed in order to make sure that the content is as good as it can be, though.
The artwork for the game is not yet 100% finished. We believe we can rely on our experienced Art Director Vincent Dutrait and a wonderfully talented Artist in Yann Tisseron to deliver in time, even if we get a lot of additional work during the campaign.
Shipping and Logistics are always an issue. However, we have some experience with this. Our last Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sweet-lemon/terrible-monster) was able to deliver a game for less than 10 Euro (Game+Shipping) to more than 600 people worldwide. Since last November we operate our own online shop and we will be able to use its infrastructure to take care of the complete european part of the logistics.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
