Swamp Angel will be a new artist-run gallery and apothecary in downtown Cedar Michigan that showcases the handmade goods of sisters Kelly Kehl and Katie Hafner . Our mission is to be a studio and storefront rooted in the traditions of folk art, herbalism and community care. We hope that our hand-made offerings encourage feelings of personal wellness and belonging. We have a strong sense, that given room to breathe and take shape, Swamp Angel will come alive and thrive as a brick-and-mortar business.
Together we are approaching this project with confidence and excitement. We have always been radical makers, wellness advocates and tenders of Earth. We are both willing extroverts, happy to be with and serve people. We have shared experience in the workplace of retail, people-care, public wellness, customer service and the arts. Swamp Angel will be the first time we can share all of our gifts in partnership, centering the vital work that nurtures our own selves and aims to nurture the wider community we are a part of.
Your patronage will bouy us as we tackle the real challenges of opening our shop. We plan to use your funds to pay for CPA support so that we can organize a sustainable business plan. With your funds we would like to purchase shop furniture, including a counter and shelving. Finally, with the remaining funds, we can prepare our shop to be beautiful, bright, and ready to open.
We humbly request your patronage, and we are ever grateful that you are confident in our vision to create and curate a cultural space that values intuitive creativity and regenerative arts.
Risks and challenges
This project is a small golden egg cupped in our hands. We simply cannot believe how fortunate we are to make this little dream of ours come alive, here in our childhood home of Leelanau. It is our aim to approach this project with an enthusiastic commitment to truth.
At first, we commit to the truth of our own bodies, our own hearts and souls. Maintaining the balance between creative integrity and the market-mind will challenge us to take a contemplative approach when producing goods and managing our shop. We will be challenged to create an economic model that values radical creativity and financial sustainability.
We are committed to being truthful to our community. We come to this project with working-class incomes and limited funds. All money that goes into this project( outside of Kickstarter) is money that would otherwise go towards meeting the needs of our families. Because we believe that this project must happen, we are willing to jump in and make it happen. Your contribution helps us make it real with less personal financial risk.
Swamp Angel is a labor of love, and we invite challenges that educate us to choose loving action. We aim to be transparent about the privileges that we possess as able-bodied white women living in Leelanau County, and we are aware that some of the success we may experience as entrepreneurs is because of these privileges. We do not wish to create a business that thrives because of the disadvantage of others, and yet we understand that our current marketplace often works that way. Our greatest challenge will be to navigate this economy and our place within it; we aim to be ethical, socially responsible and contribute to cultural wellness.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
