About this project
The Power to Dream becomes the Power to Change
(The video above is a shortened version of the original video we produced for our Kickstarter project. To see the original video which includes all our team members please scroll to the bottom of this page. We hope you enjoy it. Thanks!)
Today we live in a world where negative portrayals of Latinos seem to inundate mainstream media. This, unfortunately, is the world many young Latinos find themselves in- fighting negative stereotypes and looking for positive leadership within the Latino community.
At Silicon Valley Latino – a website created by a team of volunteers- we want to showcase more positive Latino role models.
We have not forgotten that to be successful one must reclaim that youthful daring spirit. It is an entrepreneurial spirit that believes in hard work, in higher learning, and in positive outcomes that benefit our collective community. A spirit of doing what you love.
At Silicon Valley Latino what we love is featuring notable Latinos and focusing on our youth because we know that every great idea begins with a dream. SVL is not just a website but a movement- a rebranding if you will.
SVL CELEBRATES the stories of successful Latinos and Latinas. SVL CHALLENGES perceptions of the Latino community. SVL seeks to INSPIRE new generations of Latino heroes.
Not just here in the heart of Silicon Valley but around the world because Silicon Valley is not just a place but a State of Mind.
Our goal at Silicon Valley Latino Publishing is to make information available to the general public using social media as well as traditional media.
To that end we want to produce a quality print publication for the Latino community, a publication for the next generation of Latino leaders. A publication that is both inspiring to read but also serves as a resource for youth, a blueprint on how our youth can access the opportunities for a better education, a better career, a better life, because to be a Latino is to be a family.
The publication will consist of original, meaningful and practical content in the areas of education, business, health, arts and leadership to name a few. It will be printed on high-quality paper and include a pull-out section that will serve as a resource for our Latino community.
We want to aspire to nothing short of greatness as the preeminent showcase of Latino empowerment.
Hello my name is Alex Ontiveros and I am the founder of Silicon Valley Latino. This project could not have been possible without our core team. We are experienced publishers, editors, social media experts, graphic artists, photographers and videographers, writers and social marketing event planners. In addition to these core team members we also have other contributing writers, photographers, designers and volunteer advisory board mentors assisting us in this endeavor.
All of us have already donated time and money towards producing the SVL website, which was launched May 2012, and now we are ready to take the next step in showcasing successful, professional Latinos and impacting the lives of young Latinos.
But to take the next step we need your help.
To bring this print publication to life, to get it into the hands of our Latino leaders, educators, students, artists and dreamers we want to raise $15,000 in 60 days.
Our goal is to raise $15,000 but our hope is to raise a lot more. The funds raised will be used to design, print and distribute the publication and to supplement the in-kind contributions of the artists and writers who will help bring this dream to life.
Thank you Kickstarter community for watching, thank you for caring, thank you for giving but most of all thank you for believing in our cause.
Some voices from our community on being Latino and about SVL:
Hilda Ramirez: "Time to celebrate the success of our friends at SVLATINO! Congrats!"
Sonia Ramos: "Supporting Silicon Valley Latino and the launching of our community into online media! What a positive contribution to Latinos in SV. Hope you will all stay engaged!"
Albert Beltran Jr: "I would love to help out with this. I think it's time for another group to be recognized for the hard work."
Sergio Domeyko: "Yo me siento Latino porque hablo una lengua basada en el latin y me siento Hispano porque tengo sangre de la raza que descubrio Hispaniola y soy Americano porque mi tierra esta en America."
Rose Juarez-Collins: "Stories shared from the past with the new generation while making tamales is the best!"
