Out of Body, a feature-length LGBTQ rom-com movie
From the writers & producers of ANALYSIS PARALYSIS & THE PERFECT WEDDING: Falling in love with your best friend can be problematic...
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Wed, August 22 2018 3:58 AM UTC +00:00.
To create a feature-length, laugh-out-loud, tug-at-your-heartstrings romantic comedy that will entertain audiences from the opening credits right to the satisfying conclusion.
Henry's been in love with his best friend, Malcolm, since forever. But on the night he plans to confess his feelings, things go horribly wrong...
Help us realize our vision. We have the actors, we have the crew, we have the script--written by New York Times bestselling romance author, Suzanne Brockmann--and we have most of the money. With your help, we can raise the balance of the budget needed to put together something that you (and we) will love. A kick-ass, laugh-out-loud funny and romantic film with the highest quality writing, performances, and production, at a fraction of the cost of a typical Hollywood feature. No excuses, no compromises.
We are in pre-production now with filming scheduled for September 2018, in Sherman Oaks, California, just outside of LA. Post-production will take place immediately after the ten-day shoot, and we expect to be ready for the 2019 festival circuit, with a commercial release in late 2019.
We've done this three times before. Our first two low-budget features, a romantic comedy called The Perfect Wedding, and a thriller called Russian Doll, both achieved the holy grail of independent filmmaking: distribution. Our third feature, Analysis Paralysis, has just finished post and will be screening at LGBTQ film festivals this fall, with a larger release to follow. We know what it takes to succeed and we plan to do it again with Out of Body.
The funds we raise in this campaign will go directly to things you will see on the screen: set design, artistic design, additional crew and the costs of a second camera, as well as lighting and sound.
The script was donated, the producers and director are working for free, the SAG actors are working essentially for minimum wage. We appreciate anything you can do to help us, and we will treat your contributions with the care and respect they deserve.
We've set our funding goal pretty low, and we'd love to crush it. In our wildest dreams, we'd raise enough to buy both a grip package and a set of lenses for our digital cameras, so we wouldn't have to rent them for this and future films.
Our Mission Statement:
At small or LARGE and My Pet Hippo Productions, we think the world is a far more diverse and interesting place than Hollywood blockbusters would have us believe.
Our mission is to create high quality, exciting, and entertaining movies featuring a universe where:
- LGBTQ characters have leading roles that are never based on stereotypes
- The main conflicts of our LGBTQ characters aren't created by their sexual orientation
- Female characters have roles that go beyond mother, wife, daughter, and/or woman-in-jeopardy
- People of color have roles that are never based on stereotypes
- A limited budget does not mean a compromised product
The screenplay for Out of Body was written by New York Times bestselling author, Suzanne Brockmann with Jason T. Gaffney. Suz also wrote a novelization of the story, currently available in both ebook and print, and coming soon in audiobook, too!
Suz Brockmann is the author of fifty-seven novels, and is the 2018 recipient of the Romance Writers of America's Lifetime Achievement Award. Jason, along with Ed Gaffney, is part of a son/father team who have also written the California Comedy series of m/m romance novellas as well as the screenplay for 2018's Analysis Paralysis.
Friends to lovers, with a supernatural twist...
Henry’s been in love with his best friend Malcolm since college, but after he kisses Mal on Halloween night, things go desperately wrong. Awkward turns to just plain weird when Mal mysteriously vanishes.
And weird gets freaky when Henry starts to wonder if he’s being haunted by Mal’s ghost.
Henry’s other friends think he’s losing it—that Mal’s just run from conflict. But freaky turns to full-on crazy when, with the help of a “spirit guide,” Henry casts a spell that allows him—and only him—to see and hear Malcolm, who’s been right there, in his house, the entire time.
If Mal really is a “lingering spirit,” he won’t “move on” to a place of “pleasure and peace” until he completes some undetermined “unfinished business.” And Mal—who’s been in love with Henry since forever, too—assumes his task is to help his best friend woo and fall in love with another man—Henry’s new, hot neighbor, Rick.
But sometimes things aren’t what they seem, being invisible doesn’t always mean you’re dead, and love really can conquer all…

The Perfect Wedding premiered with sold-out screenings at the Sarasota Film Festival. It went on to screen at the Spokane International Film Festival, the Long Island Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and the Garden State Film Festival where it won the best comedy feature film.
Russian Doll won the Audience Award at qFlix Worcester.
Both films are distributed by Wolfe Releasing.
A few of our rewards are books-only, signed by the various authors in our production team, and many are digital-only, but some rewards include a DVD of Out of Body. Because of that, we've followed Kickstarter's suggestion and made "August 2019" our official "Estimated delivery" for those rewards that include a DVD, since that's our guess for when we'll have the DVD ready to ship to you.
Please note that we'll be shipping all non-digital "Thing" rewards to you in a single package, so if your reward includes an Out of Body DVD, you'll receive everything on or around August 2019.
If post-production moves more quickly, of course we'll ship earlier! (We'll be in regular touch via our updates!)
Signed material (other than Suz's books) will be autographed by Jason T. Gaffney and as many members of the cast & production team as humanly possible, given logistics of where we all are during post-production and festival season! (We'll do our best to make sure you have plenty of fun signatures!)
U.S. backers: The shipping costs for your rewards are included.
International backers: We are happy to fill out customs forms and ship (nearly all of) our backer rewards anywhere in the world, but because international shipping costs are steep, we've added additional fees for postage to all internationally shipped rewards. Those shipping fees will appear when you click through to pay. (Thank you for understanding!)

Risks and challenges
Any project with as many moving parts as the production of a feature film is subject to risk. One of our actors could get sick, one of our locations might get damaged, one of our crew members could become unavailable. Still, we have contingency plans for all but the most extreme disasters. (Let's face it -- a Los Angeles earthquake could really mess us up.) But we've got back up cast and crew available. And low-budget filmmaking, by its nature, requires the ability to think on your feet. When we made ANALYSIS PARALYSIS, THE PERFECT WEDDING, and RUSSIAN DOLL, we handled several last minute challenges successfully, and if similar problems arise in OUT OF BODY, we expect to do the same.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
