About

Who wouldn't want a birds eye view ?

Who - We are Paul and Pauline McBride, owners and creators of the award winning Sussex Prairie garden based in the West Sussex Weald near the village of Henfield. We are committed to giving our garden visitors the best possible experience when they visit our garden and we want to add to that experience by building a viewing tower for the ultimate garden view.

We want you all to be able to see this -

What - Our vision is to build a Corten steel tower with a mid,  and top viewing deck. The tower will give incredible views of the Prairie Garden,  as well as the South Downs and Chanctonbury Ring.

Why - We want to give garden visitors a chance to see the overall layout and design of the garden to add to the visitor experience. A view, which up until now can only be seen on our garden plan. Now is the chance to see the actual layout and beauty of how the garden has been designed and put together.

  •  Where did this project come from?
Pauline was born and brought up on Morlands Farm. She met Paul while working for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in the Somme battlefields of Northern France. After a career designing gardens in France, Luxembourg, Germany and the UK, Paul & Pauline designed & created their own garden in Sussex, in 2008. With the help of 40 friends and family, we planted 35 000 plants in two weeks-the result of which you can see in our video.
  •  What’s your plan, and what’s your schedule?
We will construct the viewing tower during the closed season from October 2019 to May 2020.
  •  What’s your budget?
             The project cost is £60 000, broken down to: Professional Fees-£7500 Foundations-£11500, Steel Structure-£21 000, Cladding -£15 000 Contingency-£5000.
  •  Why do you care?
We have created the biggest Prairie Garden in the UK, featured on BBC TV three times and have been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers. The ability to view the garden from an elevated position adds a powerful third dimension to the viewing experience of the garden. We dream of providing a bird's eye view of the garden to our garden visitors.

Risks and challenges

We were worried that gaining local authority planning permission would be a major hurdle. Much to our surprise, permission was granted with minor alterations to protect our neighbours privacy. Building on wealden clay can cause problems, especially in winter. We have recent experience of dealing with, and overcoming, these problems, having just completed a successful conversion of a 1920's Dutch Barn.
Building a tower of simple construction, with a nod to the local vernacular, is a challenge. We feel we are in safe hands, with Sandy Rendel Architects, an award winning practice with a strong track record of innovation and architectural excellence.
