SUSHI GIRL centers on the compelling character of a man called “Fish,” just released after six years in jail after successfully not ratting on those involved in the robbery that sent him to prison. The night he is released, the men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner. The meal is a lavish array of sushi, served off the naked body of a beautiful young woman. The sushi girl seems catatonic, trained to ignore everything in the room, even if things become dangerous. Sure enough, the unwieldy thieves can’t help but open old wounds in an attempt to find their missing loot, with violent results. SUSHI GIRL is directed by Kern Saxton (co-writer of the film along with Destin Pfaff) and is produced by Assembly Line, a team including Neal Fischer, Pfaff, Saxton and Suren M. Seron, in association with Level Up Productions.
Hey Kickstarter, we just completed a badass movie called Sushi Girl. Check out our video and if you don’t think it kicks ass, we’re happy you took the time to watch it and read this far.
You’re still reading? Then we hope you agree with us – that our film and the amazing actors in it really do kick ass! As filmmakers, we feel our actors turned in some of the best performances of their careers and we can't wait to share their work and this movie with the world on November 27th, 2012!
When we imagined this film, we went to all our favorite actors growing up, the guys that inspired us to become filmmakers and still inspire us today, our cinematic heroes, and rounded them all up, put them together in a genre bending suspense thriller crime flick and created something original that has NOT been done before. We are so proud of this film, and we want to share it with the world. We need your help to make that happen – to show the world the amazing performances our actors gave us in an ensemble movie like no other – and to make a difference in how truly indie films like Sushi Girl are seen.
In our digital age, the glory of the once great Hollywood premiere that honored the talents of so many brilliant filmmakers is all but dead. Many modern filmmakers who work diligently for years to bring unique stories to life rarely get a red carpet experience honoring their talents and contributions. Outside of a few large tent pole films, most films go direct to home video or stream online without much awareness or fanfare. The actors and filmmakers that make so many great films never get a chance to interact with their biggest fans and celebrate some of the best work of their careers in true old Hollywood style. We are going to change that and set a new example with our film Sushi Girl by including YOU, the people we made this film for, in the entire night. Thank you, Kickstarter, for giving us a chance to make this happen.
Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood is one of the oldest and most respected movie houses in the world. It is one of the birthplaces of blockbuster cinema as we know it today. Sid Grauman was a showman – he knew that to make a splash with a film – you either go big or go home. By creating wonderful movie palaces devoted exclusively to the art of film like The Million Dollar Theatre, The Chinese Theatre, and The Egyptian Theatre, Sid and his family made sure that when a movie opened at one of his palaces, the film along with its stars and filmmakers truly were larger than life – even for just one night. We want this tradition to continue, and to make it possible for quality independent films like Sushi Girl to get the same treatment deserving of so many Hollywood classics, and for you to be involved in a truly egalitarian way.
Help us bring Sushi Girl to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on November 27th, 2012 in classic Hollywood style, with a full on red carpet premiere that treats our stars, veteran actors Tony Todd, James Duval, Noah Hathaway, Andy Mackenzie and Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, as well as our fantastic crew in a way that respects their enormous artistic contributions to our film and to the legacy of motion pictures. It will cost us $20,000 to make this happen, and we have less than two weeks to make our dream come true! We want to give you the opportunity to not only make some Hollywood magic happen, but be a part of the entire event as well. This event is not just for our actors and our amazing crew – but for YOU, the fans of high quality independent cinema.
By participating in this campaign, you will be given the opportunity to attend the official Hollywood world premiere of our film, both in person or virtually through what we have dubbed a “virtual premiere.” Through our streaming partner, you can view a special Kickstarter Backer stream of the entire event, ask questions on the red carpet, attend the after party, and be an important part of the entire event.
A big premiere like this will help insure that our film will get much wider media coverage than ever before, which in turn will enable Sushi Girl to get into more theaters around the world, especially in the USA and Canada, keeping alive the theatrical experience in general for indie films and making sure quality independent films will keep coming to a theater near you.
Finally, if we surpass our initial goal of $20,000 and reach $75,000, we will be able to have an even larger premiere which will include closing down Hollywood Boulevard for major international media coverage and much more attention to the power of Kickstarter and every loyal fan to create real change in our industry!
Risks and challenges
The world of independent film is falling apart a little more every day. Free content and pirates of the digital age have all but rooted out what was once the core of our entire industry and the epitome of cutting edge cinematic culture. Sushi Girl represents a group of filmmakers who straddle the line between wanting to celebrate the glory days of Old Hollywood and classic American cinema and the new paradigm of indie filmmaking and distribution. We’ve run extremely lean making this amazing film for you, but we don’t want to give four years of hard work away for free online.
We respect all our terrific actors and paid them as well as we could. We wanted to work with the guys we grew up watching, many of whom are personal heroes. Some of these guys may have fallen out of the limelight due to an insurgence of younger talent, but they have 10x the real skill and real ability, proven over decades of quality work. These guys aren’t just genre staples, they’re REAL AMERICAN ACTORS, and examples to follow for anyone who has ever wanted to capture an audience’s attention on screen.
We love our film, our cast, our crew, and our fans. This premiere gives everyone involved the chance to be seen, be heard, and for your contribution to make a real difference to the world of independent cinema. YOU are the reason we made this film and we feel that YOU deserve the opportunity to walk the red carpet with us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
