Things have changed for the team. Hana, freed from the Triad, lives with Rain in Hong Kong and works as an occasional mercenary, while Deke has grown apart from them since Glas returned to the US.
Hana accepts a small mission for a shadowy organization asking for her services. Her target: a mysterious ancient statuette held by the ambassador of China in France. She sees it as a good opportunity to visit her birthplace... But this 'easy' mission is about to lead Hana to something bigger than expected. Meanwhile Glas is approached by a client who catches his attention and piques his interest, enough that Glas sets out for Greenland.
Axel is a mysterious French secret agent in charge of watching and spying the Chinese ambassador in France. The confrontation against Hana is inevitable, as he stands in her way, but destiny will force them to cooperate. Together they set out on a journey to the North Pole where they face Inuit folklore & legends… for real.
The atmosphere, characters and gameplay - which mixes tactics, puzzles and stealth - are true to the original Fear Effect. However, while there are familiar aspects of the game to previous incarnations of the franchise, you'll find yourself immersed in a completely unique and new world with Fear Effect Sedna - one that will appeal to fans both old and new.
Fear Effect Sedna
Fear Effect was a major game in the Playstation 1 era, and it has a special place in the hearts of many gamers. Last year Square Enix - through their indie-friendly platform Collective - decided to give the opportunity to developers to bring back this incredible franchise and add their own twist.
At Sushee we're very proud to have seen our project selected for its vision and story, as well as our development and design skills.
Fear Effect Sedna expresses our vision of the game, updated for our times, while respecting the work of the original team and the special atmosphere that made Fear Effect great. We’re working on keeping the best of the two previous games, but also making it our own by adding new ideas and contemporary design.
It’s time to live an incredible and totally new adventure with Hana, Rain and all the key figures you loved… in good company with new characters too. Fear Effect Sedna will explore the past of some of the characters, and will give you the opportunity to go up against new forces with this amazing team… Discover more about the story, explore a new world and culture, infiltrate mysterious organizations, fight against human and non-human enemies, solve puzzles… The very best of Fear Effect will be gathered in this new opus!

Fear Effect 1&2
On January 31st, 2000, Fear Effect was released on Playstation 1 in North America. This third-person action game was developed by US team Kronos Digital Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive. It was a great success thanks to its dystopian cyberpunk atmosphere, the maturity of its scenarios and its strong characters (Hana in particular).
The original team of mercenaries included Hana, Deke & Glas, with Rain then joining them during the second game. Both titles focus on betrayal, corruption and revenge, from the human world in Hong Kong to the depths of Hell, intertwining tales from the spirit world with mafia wars.
Creative in its scenario, Fear Effect is also known as one of the first game to feature cel-shaded graphics.
Fear Effect Sedna will explore a bit more about the characters’ pasts and you'll have the pleasure of discovering new truths throughout the game.
But what happened to them during the past four years? Here are few hints!
Hana is now free from the Triad, but continues to take assignments for them as a mercenary. She lives and works in Hong Kong, with Rain. She turned 30 this year, but sometimes feels older.
When the Triad tasks her with completing a mission in Paris, she sees it as an opportunity to learn more about her birthplace, while stealing a little something from the Chinese ambassador - an easy job. Or so it seems.
Rain still follows Hana closely. She hasn’t learned a great deal about herself in the past four years, and although she doesn’t speak much about this (even to Hana), she's feeling more and more uncomfortable about her own situation.
After their last mission together, Glas decided to return to the US, but his guilt grows day by day. He does a few small jobs but tends not to finish anything, and feels increasingly disenfranchised from society. Full of regrets, he has lost his direction. And hope.
Then, one night he meets a stranger who leaves behind a clue - an Inuit artefact - one connected to what has been troubling Glas for years. Unable to escape what appears to be his destiny, Glas journeys to the North Pole to investigate.
In Hong Kong, Deke is bored stiff - and that’s never a good thing. He's been working on and off as a mercenary but gets no satisfaction in working alone.
Since Glas left, he found he couldn’t get on as well with Hana and Rain, so he let them drift apart.
Nostalgic for the good days. Which were always full of chaos. And bloodshed. Deke yearns for both.
A member of the French secret service for the past four years, Axel is on duty at the DGSI. His official mission: to protect the ambassador of China in France. Axel's real mission? To spy on the ambassador and find out if the French secret service's art trafficking suspicions about him are true.
Trying to 'protect' Hana’s target is going to be a tough job - and their meeting promises to be explosive...
Even though the gameplay of Fear Effect Sedna will be very different from the first episodes, exploration will remain an important part of the game. Treacherous angles will still be part of the experience: each character has a limited field of view, and you will only see a portion of the environment at a given time. You will have to trust your eyes, but also your ears, and react quickly to avoid being surprised!
Fights will occur very often in the game. Up to 5 characters will fight various enemies in real-time. But the events will inevitably split the team sometimes, changing the whole strategies depending on who you command at a given time. Strategy, positioning and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each character will be essential. But don’t worry: you’ll be able to pause the game whenever you want to plan your next move(s). Choose wisely...
Puzzles are an important part of the Fear Effect series. Fear Effect Sedna will be no exception! You will sometimes need to unlock a door, disarm a trap, and to do so, you will encounter various puzzles mixing modern components such as hacking, electric wiring, but also more mysterious brain-teasers involving symbols and Inuit carvings.
The atmosphere will play a crucial part in the feeling of insecurity, but that’s not all. We wanted to materialize the stress accumulated by the characters, and make it influence the gameplay.
Every character will see their Fear Effect increase or decrease by undertaking certain actions. Most of the skills can be used under certain Fear Effect conditions, so keep an eye on the gauge!
If you love the fights in Fear Effect Sedna, this mode is for you! You’ll have to engage in combat against various opponents, aside from the story, to unlock bonuses like outfits, new weapons, and more!
Why the isometric view?
The original Fear Effect games focused on harrowing camera angles and the feeling of loneliness to create a nerve-racking atmosphere. But the story, the characters and their relationships are a huge part of what made the game such a classic. Fulfilling a mission together, they will interact a lot, and not only during cinematic cutscenes, but also while you play.
The second point that made us choose tactical view and combat is that we wanted them not only to interact verbally, but also act together. We wanted to see Rain being proud of Hana actually change the way she fights. We wanted to see Deke’s thirst for blood change the way the others react. We wanted to show how Glas trying to hold a door, while the others get prepared for the incoming assault, makes them all nervous and confident at the same time.
Considering all this, we opted for the isometric view, allowing to see every character any time; and the tactical approach, though in real time, allowing us to create situations and reactions to the protagonists’ behavior.
Sketches and artworks: the universe of Fear Effect Sedna
Music is extremly important in Fear Effect. As with the rest of the game, our goal is to make a modern, yet respectful soundtrack, that serve the unique ambiance of Fear Effect.
Fear Effect was a successful and memorable game, and we really want to be true to the licence by providing the best game we can create. But as you know, quality requires funds, and the more we have, the more people can work on the project; designers, animators, musicians, level designers…
So help us not only reach our goal, but surpass it! We have plenty of ideas to make the game even better.
Hi! We are Sushee. Nice to meet you! We’re an indie studio, based in France - a small team full of a range of talented people. We have a lot of experience in game development, and created games for a lot of well-know companies.
Two years ago, we decided to make our own games, and developed Goetia, a point-and-click adventure. Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign and with the support of Square Enix Collective, Goetia will be released in mid-April. We’re now working full-time on Fear Effect Sedna - but have many other ideas & projects…

For indie studios like ours, the Fear Effect franchise is an incredible opportunity to work with a AAA franchise. But Fear Effect Sedna will definitely be an indie title, once developed only with our own resources. That's why we need funding to secure development which will take months. What about Square Enix?
Fear Effect is, and will remain, a Square Enix IP. We submitted our project pitch to Square Enix Collective, and it was approved – meaning that we were able to license the Fear Effect IP.
The goal of Square Enix Collective is to help indie studios, and providing a licence such as Fear Effect (for which Square Enix has no plans to make a game of their own) is a great way to help us create something in an established, well-thought-out and consistent universe.
As we are responsible for the whole development of the game, we are also responsible for raising the funds. This means that we will be able to earn the majority of revenue when the game goes on sale, which is a great opportunity for us to make a name for ourselves. For those asking why Square Enix simply doesn’t fund the game themselves – if they did that, they would also then keep the majority of revenue instead. So that's why we need you! The Kickstarter is not the only source of funding for us (we are putting our own money into the project as well) but it is an important one.
During the development, Square Enix Collective will provide us with technical and production support, although we will retain creative control on the project. The finished game will be published by Square Enix Collective, meaning they will also help with marketing, QA and lots of other little things important when releasing the game.

Risks and challenges
Making this classic video game franchise ours is our most important challenge. However, we know our strengths as an experienced team: we've worked together for more than three years, we all have experience in video games and we know each other really well - what we are capable of, and what we're not.
Deadlines, and more importantly, the challenges of a Kickstarter campaign, are also not things that we’re just discovering.
Our first game, Goetia, is about to be released in few days; we experienced a successful Kickstarter for it last year, and we know how important crowdfunding is for us. We had the pleasure to create a small but very active community around our games, especially this one, and we’re looking forward meeting new people like you during this Kickstarter campaign for Fear Effect Sedna.
You probably never heard about Sushee, and well, that’s quite normal. We’re a small team in a tiny French town, but we think we make great games - enough to be supported, since the beginning, by Square Enix Collective who have helped us to focus on development; but also by French public organization.
And this time, for Fear Effect Sedna, John Zuur Platten, the original writer and producer, plus Matt Furniss, sound designer of the first Fear Effect game, are doing us the honour of supporting us as well.
We will put all of our effort in creating and developing an exciting game that will respect the original series, and make a game you’ll love to play very soon.
