Lush Little Landscapes: A Book for Miniature Fairy Gardeners
The Lush Little Landscapes book shows you how to create inspiring miniature gardens, whether you're a beginner or expert.
In our last minutes...Everyone who has thought about backing but thinks we still have a way to go - know that you risk nothing by backing this project. You pay nothing and I get nothing unless we reach our goal. And you stand to get your rewards if we make it! So help us reach our goal!
I make a special kind of miniature garden – full of detail and surprises. I’m creating a book with step-by-step instructions and inspiration to make your own attention-getting, delight-inducing, realistic miniature gardens. I'll show you where to get supplies and buy accessories, which plants work best, how to make realistic miniatures and landscape design fundamentals that bring your tiny garden to life.
Click here to see what's in the book - a list of many of the possibilities in a Table of Contents. (Creator levels and above will vote on what eventually makes it into the book.) The softcover printed book will be in landscape format - 11" wide by 8.5" tall - with at least 80 pages of full color inspiration and instruction.
Lush Little Landscapes is a collaboration between the arts of landscaping, crafting, architecture and design - appealing to all of our senses. Hobbyists of all types can work with beads, clays, wood, paint, metal, wire, glitter, jewelry, concrete, stone, sand and dozens of other mediums to make their tiny garden appear real. I'm an art director and I love a creative challenge. I have lots of amazing, challenging gardens planned for this book.
The amount of creativity fostered in a miniature garden can be endless. The projects are a blast for both kids and adults - and everyone loves the results!
What can you do with a miniature garden?
- Celebrate a holiday, a birthday, a wedding, a new neighbor

- Keep it in your workspace to instill the serenity that growing things bring
- Give a garden as a unique and unexpected gift (or give the book as a gift)
- Grow cooking herbs with a tiny garden patio in your kitchen
- Showcase your collections, interests and activities
- Relax, recharge and get a moment of peace by contemplating growing things
- Remember a trip or imagine a place you'd like to go
- Thank a teacher, mark an occasion, bring in the season
- Create that amazing garden you found on Pinterest - in a fraction of the space
Why Me and Why a Book?
I created hundreds of miniature gardens in the last couple of decades - sold at art fairs and given as gifts. I built custom designs for clients and dozens as variations on a theme for event centerpieces.
What's in the book?
Each miniature garden will be shown step-by-step in a dozen or so pages and full-color, with instructions, where to find items, design and layout and ideas for substitutions and options. I’ll show you how to make or find the perfect container that enhances each theme. Where do you find visual inspiration for a beach or a farm? How do you build a treehouse? What makes a good path or patio? We'll cover all of that and more.
Elements of a Great Miniature Garden
I’ll cover basic planning and design techniques so your eye travels around the garden via a great composition. What are the minimum elements for making a realistic mini garden - and what takes it to the next level and makes it lush? Want to make working lights and water features? How to make and find sculpture and structures? Where to find bridges and ponds? We'll cover all of that and more.
Lots of Options
I won't just show you one kind of beach garden or a garden for one season or holiday - there are options galore. Play! Frolic! Recreate! Your garden can change or stay the same, it's all up to you.
You'll be surprised at all the offbeat places you find the right objects to make your garden realistic. Miniature gardening involves a lot of creating, quite a bit of hunting and collecting, a touch of design, some playing, and of course gardening, growing and tending.
Part of the creative process is generating as many wild ideas as you can and then figuring out which are the best ideas. I'll help you generate ideas and I'll tell you what worked for me (and what didn't).
I'll help you choose the plants that translate well in a miniature world. Grow what works together and aligns with the time and effort you want to commit to the care of your garden. Make sure you have what will grow indoors or outdoors, in the sun or the shade.
I put together rewards packages so you can support the project, get the book and also Kickstart your own miniature garden. Plus there are bookmarks and calendars if you love the look of a miniature garden all around you.
Get started right away! The MAKER, CREATOR and COLLABORATOR reward levels include Miniature Garden Accessory Kit(s) of your choice to begin to create your own tiny garden. I have lots of other wonderful surprises up my sleeve and other stretch goals to add to this campaign if we make it beyond our funding goal. Let's make this happen!
Risks and challenges
I create and manage creative projects for a living and I've created a super detailed spreadsheet to manage all the elements of this one.
45% of funds will go toward the time it takes to make gardens for the book, photographing them, designing the book and completing the layout along with managing this project's reward distribution.
55% of funds will go toward material expenses - plants and remaining accessories for the gardens, printing and gathering the rewards, shipping fees, vendor fees for money processing.
I Already Have: A pro camera set-up, design skills, photography skills, software and the computer I'll need to complete the book. Along with the considerable investment I've already put into equipment, miniature accessories, plants and containers, I have the skills it takes to make an lovely and informative book.
I Still Need: Purchase and create specialty items for the gardens, beyond what I already have.
If we hit our stretch goal, I will be relying on a print supplier for the book and will be beholden to them meeting their quoted timelines. I have included extra time in the timeline to allow for this kind of flexibility.
For rewards that include accessory kits, I will provide the items as described unless the materials are unavailable at the time of fulfillment - in which case I will substitute item(s) of equal value.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
