Rexford Higgs, in the video above, is just one of many characters with which you will be able to interact as if they were real people in The Miracle Mile Paradox, an alternate reality game (ARG) set in a historic neighborhood of Los Angeles. The game will run for 14 weeks this summer and will be playable both online and in real life for free!
It's simple! All the "in game" characters like Rex will have websites, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, even phone numbers, which you can read, follow and call as you discover pieces of the story. Think of it as an alternate world that overlaps with the real one that's a bit, shall we say, more dangerous & dramatic? Often times, there will be puzzles and things to figure out in order to reveal a new piece of the story.
Beginning in May (we hope!) follow Rex's blog posts as he gets into a whole lot of trouble when he builds the Time Switch. It will be up to you to help him solve the Miracle Mile Paradox and save the world from the up-to-no-good Agent Intellect Corp.!
But know that you don't have to play alone. We plan to set-up message boards on his blog where you can meet other players and discuss game events.
Anyone with a taste for adventure! The game consists of two main components:
- The online world: Rex's blog, websites, Twitter accounts, Facebook pages, Linkedin profiles, Pinterest boards, email accounts and much, much more. There might even be some hacking in to AIC employee accounts, if you get our drift.
- The live experience: An exploratory expedition through the Miracle Mile area, home to world-class museums, art deco architecture and the La Brea Tar Pits. Players will follow Rex's prompts and uncover clues that will reveal the secret location of the Time Switch machine. But caution must be advised because AIC has the entire Mile under surveillance.
The plan is to have the online gamers from all over the world interact with the players participating in the live experience in Los Angeles. Only by working together will both groups be able to unlock the mystery regarding the Miracle Mile Paradox before it is too late.
ARGs have been around for a few years, but they are not quite mainstream (yet). ARGs are designed to be participatory, exploratory, interactive and engaging. Games are usually not this immersive, though we think they should be! We think the more immersive the more fun!
All of the money is going towards the expenses needed to run both the online and live experience components such as:
- registering & hosting multiple websites
- paying for twenty different characters' phone numbers, text messages and voice mails - we expect there to be thousands sent & received
- purchasing supplies including the business cards that are the 'rabbit hole' needed to play the LA experience
- and, of course, building an actual working (but not time traveling!) Time Switch machine for Rex.
However, our biggest expense is actually the lease of an office space in Miracle Mile in which we plan to locate Rex's Time Switch for 14 weeks this summer.
There is no catch! We want to create an open, fun, immersive experience that people will talk about. By contributing you not only get to participate in a unique story world and help solve a paradoxical mystery with other players, you will also be a hero in our transmedia cause by funding an innovative entertainment project.
We are part of Transmedia LA, a group of people in the Los Angeles area looking to create better entertainment. Entertainment that is unique, cool and unexpected. Our group meets together once a month to learn, discuss, conspire, and make sure that the future of entertainment is awesome!
Our group is made out of people with many different entertainment backgrounds (film, gaming, technology, etc) and we want to learn how to work together to tell an interactive story across multiple platforms. We figured that the best way to go about that was by producing an ARG.
So we came up with a plan to develop this project through a series of workshops designed to break down the production process step by step. We are planning to have an account of the project's progress on our main site so that this can be an educational experience not only for our local group, but also for the transmedia community around the world.

Susan Bell: Susan is an interactive storyteller & filmmaker. She’s directed multiple short films and has been a producer on the Emmy-winning animated show 'Robot Chicken.' Nina Craft: Nina Craft, Ph.D., M.B.A., aka Dr. Neen, the Think it, Do it!® Queen is an award-winning social entrepreneur and international author with a background in media psychology. She empowers women to share their stories using social networking technologies.
Hadi Nicholas Deeb: is earning a PhD in linguistic anthropology, which he combines with his previous experience practicing law to investigate how authorship and ownership are changing in a new media age. He is looking into learning as much about Transmedia as possible.
Nick DeMartino: Nick is passionate about analyzing media and technology developments in order to build programs that leverage the next big thing in media markets as diverse as independent film, cable television, portable video, digital video production, interactive television, the Internet, web video, and social media. Randy Finch: Randy is an associate professor at University of Central Florida. He is a transmedia enthusiast and also a producer of films and plays. Last year he produced the Plant City Stories ARG.
Gary Gacula Gabisan: Gary is a digital and interactive media manager. He specializes in extending and developing the TV/film viewing experience on alternative screens. John Greg Gomez: John is an indie producer, filmmaker, media professional and transmedia-ARG aficionado. He is also experienced in media development, production strategy, and marketing & promotions. John is eager to learn about game and puzzle creation.
Sean Hood: Sean is an American screenwriter, director and teacher best known for horror (Halloween: Resurrection, Fear Itself, Masters of Horror), and more recently, action/thrillers (Conan the Barbarian 3D). He currently teaches screenwriting at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. He is interested in learning more about the gamification components developed in an ARG.
Chad Kukahiko: Chad is a co-funder of Superfreako Productions, and an e-pro artist for WoongDoody. Additionally, he is currently producing his first feature film, Ms. Young. He previously produced the Linian Society ARG and the live LA experience 'time/trip.'
Michelle Melton: Michelle is a Sr. Financial Analyst for Paramount Pictures. She is also actively pursuing both the CFA and CAIA Certifications with the intent of gaining a PhD in Finance in the areas of corporate finance and venture capital. She is intrigued and enthusiastic about all things transmedia.
Noah Nelson: Noah is the tech and entertainment reporter for public media's Turnstyle. Thanks to the Miracle Mile ARG he's finally getting some real use out of that BA in theatre arts.

Amanda Price: Amanda is a video producer from Joliet, IL. Since moving to Los Angeles last September, she has developed a love for transmedia and ARGs. Her goal for this project is to help take transmedia from being a marketing tool to being its own sustainable form of entertainment.
Lauren Scime: Lauren is a creative producer, social media expert, and visual artist. She is also a lover of both online and live action games, and passionate about non-linear TV, and interactive social media. Lauren is a founding member of Witchfactory Productions LLC.
Bret Shefter: Bret is a game writer and designer and devoted aficionado of games and puzzles for over twenty years, specializing in ARGs since their inception. He has also earned the title of cloudmaker extraordinaire.
Nancy Steinman: Nancy is an award-winning art director and designer with experience in brand building for consumer advertising and entertainment. Her current focus is on using social media, integrated marketing and transmedia to build worlds – both for marketing and for the sheer love of storytelling.
