About this project
Surf Soup Project Description:
Surf Soup is a picture book that teaches children how to surf, as well as ocean conservation. It is a lifelong dream of artist and animator Donna Kay Lau—that’s me.
The book has already been written and now just needs the next step: the pictures. I will illustrate all the pictures and have the whole project ready for printing. The book Surf Soup teaches children how to surf and provides character-building lessons while teaching them how to surf and instructing them on ocean conservation. It is the first book, in a series of especially themed subjects that addresses topics that are important for our children to understand.
Miss Mary Ann King from Romper Room has written the Forward to the Surf Soup book. Miss Maryann King, who appeared in Romper Room, a long-running children's television series that ran in the United States from 1953 to 1994 as well as internationally in Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. Miss Maryann King wrote the Forward to the Surf Soup book. Miss Maryann and her "Magic Mirror" and Surf Soup, watch out "Do Bees!"

When I reach my goal:
The Kickstarter funds will go toward the first deposit of the printing of the 12" x12" book.
When I Go Over This Goal (Stretch Goal)...Future Goals:
I need $8000I to publish the first book and then I can start production of the interactive digital copy of the book, which is available on Amazon Kindle and all major outlets that support this format.
I will be able to print and publish my second book—the book about the "Honu" (Turtle), centering on the theme of "The Red String of Fate".
Surf Soup Book Series:
I have several books in premise stage. One of the books is titled Surf Soup TV, a book including the characters introduced in the first book, but which will also introduce an additional character. This book tells a tale that will leave kids thinking twice about their electronic devices.
Other books in the works in this series include, Plastic Island, Those Shoes, a book about hand-me-downs; Rainbow Surfboard, Surf Soup: Our Food, a book about nutrition, exercise, sustainable farming, and assisting the homeless; and Surf Soup: Shark-less Shark Fin Soup, a book about a soup kitchen and protecting sharks from shark finning.
Done in a fun way—through pictures—these books will help bring awareness to children of different social causes, while encouraging charitable giving and character building, while strengthening their self-esteem. I have many book ideas, but I need to take one book at a time. When I complete the first few books I will start to produce the animated shorts, and some of these books may become episodes of Surf Soup.
In addition to this book series, which I am ready to roll out into production, I am designing a related clothing line, and all these products will be sustainable. Also, when the first series of books is completed, I will design 2 limited-edition collectable book box sets.

Surf Soup Style:
This project includes an infant and children's sustainable clothing line, as well as an adult Surf Soup Couture line. Each piece will be numbered as a one-of-a-kind, bringing interest to design and art on clothing. Art is On is a clothing label for Infants and children, which I developed and sold for many years, and that will be merging with Surf Soup Couture.
Surf Soup Animated Short:
When I finish the Surf Soup book series and line of merchandising, I will start the script for the Surf Soup animated short and start production on the pilot.

Surf Soup Web Series:
My project will be linked to a YouTube channel titled theSurfSoup at http://Youtube.com/theSurfsoup. It will feature a series that covers produced film shorts, highlighting the subject matters that will keep children, their parents, and you involved in the production process of these Surf Soup projects. A few how-to films to encourage creativity, thinking, and sustainability will also be featured.
Included in this projects a surfing-related series that I have developed as a fun and entertaining addition to the already wonderfully covered pro-surfing events.
We are all in the "SOUP" Together:
As you can see, I have huge ideas and the energy to produce these projects, but it is up to you to help me with this initial endeavor so that my production company will have a great kickstart.
We can teach children—who are like sponges and full of ideas and creativity—ways to make this world a better place through education and empowerment we can change the young withsustaining our environment, as well as teach them character building, encourage their problem solving skills, and help them come up with creative ideas and solutions.
Leaving this world a better place than we found it is the mission of the Surf Soup Project founded to encourage giving and change.
We are all in the Surf Soup together!

The Honu (Hawaiian for turtle) was presented at a special appearance in Southern California, where I launched my Surf Soup project and Kickstarter.
The Honu painting and book are based on the theme "Red String of Fate," which draws on the Chinese believe that: "An invisible red thread connects those destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. The thread may stretch or tangle, but never break."

Risks and challenges
I do not anticipate any problems with the production of the first book.
I have a lot of experience with the production of projects. I have designed and manufactured my own children’s clothing line and products (which is what I will do with Surf Soup, and it will all be sustainable).
I have also published and produced 4 books, and I have years of experience producing cartoons, with hundreds of cartoons already produced. If anyone can get this book series completed, that would be me.
The Surf Soup book is already written. I am in the process of designing the page turns and the fun creative part that I love the most, and that is illustrating and watching my creation come to life.
Let me enjoy it! I promise that when I am completed you will enjoy it too!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I want to share the process of the production of the first book, and to journal my experience using photos and videos.
Receiving feedback and sharing the process will be a fun and awesome experience that I want to share with everyone. I hope to inspire others to get creative.
This will all be broadcast on the Surf Soup TV web series on YouTube.
Why did you decide to write and Illustrate a picture book before an animation, after all animation is your forte?
Before I attended Animation school, I attended Art Center college of design. and studied Graphics Packaging Design, and Children's book illustration. The two are similar in that they both tell stories. Picture books have always been my dream to create. I was fascinated with the science behind the picture book, as a child I Loved to read and reread my books, and I remembered the pictures, and the words taking me into my imagination, that would pull me into the story. I Loved and anticipated the page turns.
Everyone that knows me knows how much I love to tell stories, I have always related to children. I worked on Oswald the Octopus which has always inspired me to write and illustrate a picture book and then watch how the characters come alive.
I believe this will really help me with character development, and the animation episodes will come alive. I have been a fan of picture books my whole life. I have a great book that inspires me of the letters from the publisher of great author/illustrators, of all the books I loved growing up. I hope to create a series of books that last the test of time. I am choosing to put my book into digital form for devices, but I am encouraging real books to be read, and not to be lost, because of the ipad, and android devices etc.
