Will it be possible to purchase the 2 optional settings after the campaign? And how much more expensive will they be if you do sell them? As much as I'd like to have options available, I'd rather just have the classic head and upgrade if it's not enough or too much.
@McHale speaks the truth. We don't have the option to order only the mild setting - and wouldn't recommend it anyways. It's verrrry much on the mild side :)
@Kent Tsoi - So many things! In fact, we made a nice big list! Check out the first section of our campaign page for all the reasons we're better than the other guys. And no we most definitely do not recommend using our razor without shaving cream. Each razor will come with a getting started manual that outlines all the best tips and tricks for getting a fantastic shave.
@Jeremy Gelber If you want to add the additional 2 plates (so you'll end up with 3), you just raise your total pledge by $18. That's it. If you want the mild INSTEAD of the classic, I have no idea.
How do I change my pledge to be for the Mild setting rather than the Classic? I added an additional amount to the pledge to get the "Add-On Menu" but can't figure out where to go to actually do something about it!
@MK we designed the three settings to closely mimic the Schick adjustable, if you're familiar with it. The mild setting is similar to the adjustable cranked all the way down, the aggressive similar to it cranked all the way up, and the Classic right in the middle.
It's not a perfect analogy because the added weight of our handle changes the characteristics a bit - and there are other minor differences. But it's a good way to think of it :)
@manish, to dd another starter kit to your pledge, just manually increase your pledge by the amount for the starter kit you'd like. So in your case, that would be $129.
@Ricardo Mendoza, thanks for the compliments! Unfortunately, we aren't able to offer customized finishes beyond the four existing ones.
@MK - assuming you're referring to prepaid taxes for EU? Unfortunately, we don't have the resources to tackle that. Sorry :(
@supply Is there any way to leave a textured finish (at least on the handle). I'm quite sure backers haven't experienced this problem but I would be more comfortable knowing that I would be less likely to damage this beautiful creation.
Hey John! Yep, it's a little confusing, but you did it exactly right. There will be an official survey after the campaign in which you select your choices.
Sorry - we know it's confusing, but given the limited options for setting up a campaign, this was the best way to set it up, believe it or not. Otherwise we would have had at least 12 different pledge levels.
Ok...very confusing...help me out...I just pledged $103 for a black ($79) plus $24 for extra plates. The description said there is a "add-on menu". How/where do I specify that I am also ordering the additional plates?
@Hale @Supply - Yes, that was the area I was referring to, thanks for being more explicit about where to look. I'm glad that will not be representative of the final MIM process. I agree the rest of the razor appears better finished.
@McHale - thanks for pointing that out. I definitely see that now - and what you're pointing out is not representative of the final MIM process. Also, keep in mind that photo is about 5X magnified - I'm having a lot of trouble seeing that roughness in person.
@Jerry - You're welcome! It's hard for me to answer the question because I'm honestly not sure what defects you're seeing. So here's what I can say... Our new metal injection molded parts are expected to be finished very nicely - but if you're expecting iPhone level finishes, you may be a bit let down. Minor surface imperfections are to be expected with this process, and can only be avoided at extreme expense. For what it's worth, we've shipped thousands of these razors around the globe and I can count on one hand the number that have been returned due to surface imperfections. Bottom line, we're very proud of the quality we put out. I realize that's not a direct answer, but I hope it helps. - Patrick
@Supply - Thanks for your quick reply. I also see the same defects in the stainless finish closeup photos - will those defects also be corrected in the production version? I ask because you are using a new production technique. Thanks.
@bw - if you scroll about 2/3 of the way through the campaign, you'll see a very large grey graphic that describes all the available add ons. Just increase your pledge manually by the amount of the add on(s) you want to add to your pledge. You'll be sent a survey after the campaign, and you'll indicate which add ons you want then - as well as add any more you'd like.
@Jerry - thanks for backing us! The black prototypes used for the campaign are not representative of production units. There are definitely flaws in these prototypes that will be corrected in production.
@Supply - I just backed, looks like a nice razor, although on some of the photos the castings seem to show imperfections (seen best in the closeup photos towards the corners near the blade ends). Is this just an issue impacting your prototypes - ie, do you expect your production razors to not have these defects? Thanks!
Where is this mysterious add-on menu? I haven't been able to find it.
I added the extra $24 to my pledge as an un-rewarded pledge; is that the correct way to sign up for the additional base plates?
Thanks in advance. Version 1.0 is a great product. I look forward to version 2.0.
@Bruno - yes! We used BackerKit during our last campaign to manage this. We haven't decided how to handle it this time, but odds are we'll use Backerkit again.
@Andrej - Thanks so much! I can share a couple things with you. First, you can find super high-res pictures of our razors at press.getsupply.com - hopefully that helps a bit. The short answer to your question is that the surfaces will not age, tarnish, or degrade over time at all. The longer answer is down a bit further in response to Moeen Husain.
We won't be able to post videos of the PVD process, because it occurs in a vacuum chamber without windows, but we'll definitely film an update soon and provide a bit more insight into the differences between the finishes.
I hope this helps - if it doesn't please let me know so I can explain better.
Hi Patrick,
I support wholeheartedly your quest for minimalist product design, forging the metal to adhere to the strength of mans will.
From all the pics in here and on your website, I can hardly determine the quality, texture and feel of the black vs. stainless surfaces. My main question is, how do the surfaces age with ordinary shave creams? How do they look with oily fingerprints? Any pics or vids with closeup might help.
My engineering curiosity is also eager to learn about your titanium vapor deposition, are you planning a video update on the process akin to your previous machining videos?
@Moen - a single blade razor is better for sensitive skin for many reasons. Less blades means less friction and avoids cutting hair under the skin - which means less irritation and ingrown hairs.
There are some important differences in technique when shaving with a single blade, but they're not difficult to learn and we'll be sharing instructions and tutorials along the way :)
Another question- I have never used anything except a cartridge razor system for shaving both my face and head. I also have faint hair quite high up my cheek which I shave every few weeks when it starts to show. Is it safe to shave delicate skin like the upper cheek and head with this (or any) single edge razor?
I'm not very near any of the places to buy your extra thick razor blades - so I'd like to know, can I use 'regular' (e.g. BIC etc. ) blades in your handle?
HI, I was fortunate to get the early bird pledge and pledged $83.00. I have been deciding between the jet black and mirror finish. I am leaning heavily in favor of the the mirror finish. Is the mirror finish an option for the early bird? I can proudly say I own Single Edge Razors 1.0 & 1.5. Looking forward to 2.0.
@lynette, great question. I believe Kickstarter automatically adds the $19 shipping to your pledge, which means you'll pledge the 129+79+19, and then they'll add on the shipping. Thanks! - Patrick
hi, i am looking to get the starter set (black) and another black razor, my shipping cost is $19, does this mean that i should back 129+79+19? or should i back 129+79+19+19??
@sanders Thanks for the question! The blades can be easily purchased online from a number of different vendors (Amazon being one). You're NOT locked in to buying them from us.
They are called "injector" blades and have been sold in stores for almost 90 years. They were invented by Schick in the 1930s.
There's a list of some different websites they can be purchased in the FAQ.
Hi team,
I'm curious..are the blades a standard type? Or do I need to buy your stuff only? Can I fill your (or a) dispenser with new blades. What type do I use?
Currently I'm on a 3 monthly subscription from 'ShaversClub' (a Dutch thingy), but I'm always looking for 'the ultimate' shaving tool.
@M. A. - Yes, it does enlarge the sweet spot slightly, but not tremendously so. The razor still likes it's particular angle most. We find that's what makes it so easy to use for first-timers and forgiving to user error. :)
@Moeen Husain - Great question. Each finish has it's own unique characteristics, so it depends what's most important to you. I'll mention a few of the pros and cons of each.
MATTE BLACK/JET BLACK - The black titanium PVD coating is extremely scratch and wear resistant. Although I don't have years of data to back it up, I find it very unlikely that you'll see scratches appear through normal use. The coating is second in hardness to diamonds. It's virtually impossible for the actual coating to chip off.
That said, it IS possible for the finish to become damaged if there is significant trauma to the surface. A drop from a few feet onto a countertop? I'd be more concerned for your countertop, to be honest. But a drop from six feet onto a rough concrete floor? There may be some minor damage.
If there was damage, it would be because the substrate (the underlying stainless steel) is actually damaged - not the coating. Meaning the steel has chipped - and the coating with it. In short, there really is not a more durable way to make a black coating.
MIRROR POLISH: This finish is the most susceptible to micro scratches. Anyone who has a polished stainless steel watch knows that scratches will definitely show up over time. The stainless steel Apple Watch caught a lot of flak for being a scratch magnet - but it's just a fact of life. The good news is, this finish is the most easy to return to like-new. A polishing cloth and a lot of elbow grease will fix this finish if it's damaged.
CLASSIC MATTE: We've shipped thousands of these around the world and never had a single customer complaint of scratches or damage. Is it possible to scratch it? Yes, definitely. Will it pick up scratches easily? Nope.
Wanted to ask which finish will be the most durable and long-lasting? Thinking in terms of being dropped in the sink, on the counter, sometimes even on the floor - which would stay looking the closest to the original finish? I've currently pledge for black, but would hate for the coating to start chipping off after a year or so of daily use.
@M.A. - It's a great point - we have a section in the campaign that explains it more. The design changes to improve the shave are related to the position and angle of the safety bar in relation to the blade. The changes made were fractions of a millimeter, but this is definitely enough to make a noticeable difference.
