Haque is a Roguelike Role-Playing Game for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
It's a game about mythology and nostalgia and high fantasy and old computers and manticores.
You play as a divine force that must choose and guide a lone champion to prevent Yet Another Apocalypse. Opposing you are legions of monsters and undead and villains who may have a divine force of their own guiding them....
Haque is a return to classic Western RPGs from the ASCII art days but with a hefty helping of JRPG flair, a focus on game feel, and a healthy sense of self-awareness.
Sprinkled on top is my love/hate relationship with JRR Tolkien, a framing device about discovering an old computer, my passion for boozy sessions of tabletop RPGs, and paragraphs on paragraphs about who holds the power in Mushroom-person society and what a Giant Eagle Werewolf looks like.

Cliqist digs our retro style.
Gaming on Linux gives Haque some love and gave me the beautiful phrase "chroma-aberrated pixels" to describe the game's look.
Pat Sponaugle is all in.
High Rez Gaming interviewed me! And they think Haque looks lovely.
Rogueliker interviewed me on his YouTube channel and we hung out and chilled and he's a really cool dude!
Just Press Start's Jeff Ortloff and I quote Monty Python talk about Haque on the JPS Podcast!
Gamers in Beta's Captain Mike and I talk about Haque, crowd funding, and going for it.
Gaming on Linux's Munt de Fems wrote an epic piece about the journey from my first game to Haque.
What's in Haque right now?
-Procedurally generated dungeons that take risk vs. reward into consideration just like any good master-of-a-dungeon might!
-Tactical Turn-Based Combat! Taking fast actions makes your turn come up sooner! Speedy characters can act multiple times in a row!
-Lore on lore on lore, kid. Right-clicking on anything brings up the in-game lore on that thing. Right-click on a Copper Sword? Here's everything relevant on Copper and Swords and Copper Swords in the world of Haque.
-Loyal pets and companions! Look at that cat! It loves you!
-One Painstakingly crafted Random Name Generator! Here are some gems: Eymalia Greenwhistle, Bikar Bloodscar, Arlock Azurebeard, and Dib Squidbiscuit.
What's coming to Haque?:
-A big weird plot! On top of the game's lore there'll be a chatty morally-grey love-to-hate-them antagonist and possibly something involving a haunted computer from the '90s.
-Lots more of everything! More items, more spells, more monsters, more classes and more characters to play as!
-Lots better everything! I'll have more time to tweak and balance and experiment and make everything shiny and cool.
Who are you?
Hi! I'm Kevin Cole! I make games and have been doing so full-time and independently for two years. I made Project Maiden which was successfully Kickstarted and is now playable fo' free on PC, Mac, or Linux.
I did all the art and animating and programming and design and story and accounting and promotion and blogging and worrying and some sound design for Project Maiden. I'll be doing the same for Haque!
I've been known to tweet.
Joe "Metal Ultramega" Kenneally is gonna write and record the music for Haque. He's already recorded, like, half of it anyway. Joe is a prolific Boston-area songwriter and performer. He's got a band called the Surviving Kenneallys and they're great.
Joe did music for Project Maiden and it was beautiful.
Metal Ultramega is a cyborg or believes he is one.
Brian Townsend is here help out with some pixel art and contribute his eye for graphic design. No one knows what his true motives are.
I'm also getting lots of help from my other friends! Bryan Shepherd drew the holy crap amazing cover picture. Steve Sheridan shot the part of the video with me in it! If I run into trouble with anything, I know my friends have my back!
My budget's pretty straightforward! I need to eat food and receive shelter long enough to finish the game, I need to order and ship the cool backer swag, I need to pay people who're helping me, and I need to update my equipment a little bit.
Kickstarter and the Fine Commonwealth of Massachusetts also take a small cut and that's cool! I use Kickstarter and roads and stuff so that's fine.
All rewards snowball! So Donating at Giant Tier gets you all the rewards in Eagle Tier and Cat Tier!
$1 - Cat Tier
Donating any amount of money gets you a hearty thank-you from me and access to my weekly backers-only development blog where I'll talk about how I make stuff in the game!
Want to know how I procedurally generate dungeons? Or how I did the old CRT monitor effect? Or anything? Ask me anything and I'll probably do a blog about it!
$15 - Eagle Tier
At Eagle Tier, you get the game. DRM free, PC, Mac, or Linux and a week or two at least before everyone else does.
As an extra thank-you for supporting the game, I'll add your name or handle to the credits! Thank you for being a huge reason why games like Haque can exist!
$25 - Giant Tier
You'll get the game plus Joe Kenneally's sweet, sweet soundtrack too when you back at Giant Tier!
$40 - Manticore Tier
You get the thanks, the blog, the game, your name in the credits, the soundtrack and this totally awesome patch made of real string and stuff. It'll be great.
Plus, we'll add the name of your choice to the Random Name Generator! Every so often the game will generate a champion or pet with the name you contributed! It could be your name, a friend's, your cat, or even an old Dwarf Cleric you used to roll with back in 3.0
Clerics were broke, man.
$75 - Dragon Tier
Boom. Everything at Manticore Tier. Boom. Done. But also?
You get a super sweet shot glass. Great for measuring up to 1.75 ounces of liquid! Also great for doing shots of anything you want! It's up to you when you donate at Dragon Tier.
(Have no use for a shot glass? I can send you extra patches instead! Just let me know.)
$150 - Lich Tier
At this level, I'll put one of your ideas for a weapon, monster, or item into the game!
As long as it fits the theme of the game (which is pretty broad), isn't copywritten (homage is fine!), and can be expressed in a Tweet (I know you could go on for paragraphs), I'll put it in!
Do you want to see a legendary musclebound sword named Flexcalibur? I'll put it in. Some kind of monster that's half sphinx/half grammarian? In. A potion that turns you into a fluffy pink rabbit? We'll workshop it.
Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions!
$200 - Champion Tier (NEW!)
Not only will you get everything in Lich Tier (which is a lot of things) but you'll also get a limited edition, hand-stitched, black canvas Traveler's Keep Tote Bag adorned with your choice of Cat, Dog, Eagle, or Sword emblem!
There are only a few Tote Bags because Katrina is only one very hard working person, so act fast if you want one! I'm getting one. I'm totally getting one.
Beyond Champion Tier???
If you like Haque SO MUCH that tiers cannot contain the amount of money you'd like to back me with, send me an email or a message and we'll figure out something personal that fits the amount you're backing for!
If you have too much money and a great idea for a boss that's WAY too hard, consider the Overlord Tier. I will work hard to bring your dream of a nightmarishly hard boss monster to life, complete with special attacks. (Plus the patch, the shot glass and the tote bag)
Risks and challenges
Video games take a long time to make especially when your team is very, very small and something as tiny as being sick for a few days can throw off your entire schedule.
Delays suck, but they're pretty much the only sucky thing you might have to put up with. I've made a large-ish-scale game like this before and I learned a bunch of lessons about scope and staying in it.
However most of the big, complicated systems in Haque have already been built and if delays do happen, you'll know about them in the weekly blog!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
