In December 2000 we published Superior Ice. the first comprehensive guidebook to the ice climbs in the Lake Superior region. This region is located in western Ontario, right at the top of Lake Superior. It includes the climbing areas of Thunder Bay, Kama Bay, and Orient Bay. The local town is Nipigon, about 1.5 hours drive north of Thunder Bay or 5 hours drive north from Minneapolis.
Superior Ice came out 14 years ago. The book has gone out of print and many new routes have been put up the sport has changed. Leashless tools have been invented and mixed climbing is gaining in popularity and has taken off in the area. There are many quality routes with active development by talented climbers.
Besides the strong local talent, well-known names in the greater climbing community have put up new routes in this area, including Mark Wilford, Scott Backes, Guy Lacelle, Conrad Anker, Raphael Slawinski, and Sean Isaac.
Due to the still relatively small market for ice and mixed climbing guidebooks we are hoping to fund the production expenses of the project. All writing, fieldwork, photography, copyediting and graphic design is donated. If we get funded we will make a small profit, but at the heart of it we are climbers, writing for climbers, and hoping to promote our sport. As part of this effort we will donate two copies of Superior Select to the American Alpine Club Library, the Alpine Club of Canada and the Nipigon Public Library.

Risks and challenges
We have published seven different guidebooks and understand the production issues and challenges. One risk is poor print production, but we have worked with professional printing houses for years and have trusted suppliers. Another risk is production expenses getting out of control, but we already have printing quotes in-hand so know what that will cost. The major risk is not getting funded!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
